Thank you for saying that you Trim away the leaves and keep the suckers. I've been doing that for years and it works wonderfully. Everybody always says get rid of the suckers. Your garden is beautiful

Wait do you keep the little leaves that come between a unfruitful branch and the stem but cut off that branch? How does this work I’m kinda confused cuz I was also told to get rid of the suckers? First time having tomato plants so I appreciate any advice! 😊

Every Tomatoe doesn't go to waist take the green ones punch a hole three make your polish pickles broth and cut onions and place on bottom then green tomatoes halfway then red pepper cut in half about five then onion then fill Green Tomatoes then a teaspoon of pickles crunch use it with everything you need as a crunch, Okra, veggies pickles with red hot pepper ok. You will be happy. Use up everything. Next grow tons of pepper to make cowboy candy but don't give any jars away charge those men. My husband friend's thought I must be a store on can food's. @yeabuddy6070
@yeabuddy6070 Жыл бұрын
These types of tomatoes are indeterminate, meaning they will continue to grow as long as the weather and nutrient load allows them too. Disease usually ends their life at some point though.

So does everyone prune their tomatoes? I have very fertile dirt (I have ducks) and everything grows like crazy. BUT my tomatoes, although they always look healthy and enormous, hardly give me any fruit, ever. Tons of green foliage, a few flowers, but a pitiful amount of actual tomatoes. They will literally be 8 ft tall by fall, but I want tomatoes, that's the whole point!!!
@altabugs
@altabugs Жыл бұрын
Too much nitrogen? Not sure though this may be the duck effect. Try fertilizing with more P and K, and less N (of the NPK breakdown of your fertilizer). You can also get your soil tested to confirm what it needs (through your county Cooperative Extension). That ducky soil would be GREAT for heavy nitrogen feeders like butternut & other squash, pumpkins, some brassicas & greens. And I don't know about all that pruning (while keeping the suckers?), though I will be looking into it myself. Lastly, you may have a pollinator problem (?). Must attract more bees & butterflies to the garden, and help out a little by hand-pollinating (?). Again, ask a master gardener at the cooperative extension. Good luck!

@@altabugs Thanks. I'll have to look into fertilizer. I just got my first package of honey bees two days ago and put them right next to my garden. Fingers crossed. I'm also growing a small trial patch of potatoes for the first time and they look extremely happy so far. What has always grown well for me are summer squashes, okra, bush beans, collards, and broccoli. Cucumbers have been very sad and ugly every year. My watermelon were great last year until my ducks and geese obliterated them. There wasn't even an inch of stem anywhere. I searched, they were thorough.

Depends where you live. If it freezes and snows (where the snow gets inches or a foot or more deep (1/3 meter) for a couple of months, tomatoes are definitely annuals, because they will freeze and die, along with most veggies. We do get blueberries, apples, and other berries that need to freeze & go dormant.
