I have a 2000 S210 E55 estate as we call them here, would love the power of the supercharged car but I like the relative simplicity of mine. At some point I might pull the engine out and replace it with the later one and bolt a turbo onto it to see what happens but I have to finish my boat first!

My 2012 c63 ticks when it’s cold once in a while too. Usually when the oil level drops a bit. I always check the oil level if I get the tick on a cold startup.

Another good video Alex. I think the R63 is one of the lowest production AMGs. Something I always wondered about with them is, it’s built in the United States but the engine is hand built by one man presumably in Affalterbach. I guess they built the engines in Germany and then shipped it to the US to be installed in production line here?

I would add getting yourself a magnet style paint thickness gauge and checking all the panels for uniform paint thickness. Obviously this only works on steel sheet metal but I find if the car's had paint work done or any body filler it will stick out like a sore thumb using this simple and inexpensive tool.

You need a paint gauge my friend. Just place it on every panel and it gives the paint thickness instantly. If a panel had been planted it will be much thicker than the rest

My ML63 has SLS lifters and still makes the ticking sometimes when it’s cold out. My C63 and SLS don’t, but the SLS used to when we first got it. Had all lifters replaced under warranty!

I have that M 156 engine and trust me I will swear by this product, put liquid Molly additive in the oil for the lifters and it’s a great preventative maintenance to never have problems with any lifters or camshafts

I have a 2008 e63 which has the exact same sound first 60 seconds after a cold start. However, thanks to your videos (and hoovies), everytime I drive it I feel like driving a ticking timebomb which can explode anytime soon 😁

We have excellent luck clearing up intermittent lifter tick by adding Seafoam to the oil. I have found adding a full can, driving 500-1000 miles of spirited driving, then a fresh oil change will almost always fix that issue. If you are going to leave the Seafoam in for an extended period I recommend no more than half a can.

I went to look at a E39 M5 once at a dealership and asked the guy if it had come in needing work etc. He said they'd put $10,000 of work into the car when they got it. I asked to see the paperwork for the work done and he just tried to talk on about other stuff and ignored my request. I told him I'd come back later in the week to check it out more. When I did I asked him about the paperwork again and he still didn't have it and wouldn't produce it. So That was that for that E39 for me. I've worked at Mazda and GMC in the past and I've never seen or acted like this when selling cars. To me selling cars was always about just finding the car for the person that they want. Simple. Don't make anything up or tell lies and everyone should come out happy. I don't understand people like this.

The transfer case chain tends to fail on some of these as well as ML and GL (164) around 150-200.000 so it's a good idea to listen for any ticking noise on acceleration.

The one thing I don't like about this is the wheels. It's very shouty and look at me. This car was meant to be stealth speed, meaning you can roll up to a 911 and know that you can beat him without him ever realizing you're in a 500 HP plus minivan. I would change them but then again it is a rare AMG and you may want to show it off.

Great video Alex! Sounds like we are all getting over colds, kids bring home horrible stuff from daycare. I love the R-class, I think the styling is fine it’s just that they are typically a boring color (blue with tan interiors etc) and V6. Just finding a nice black R500 is rare in itself. Two more problem areas on R-class, 06+ ML class and 07+ GL class are the audio amplifier sitting in three inches of water under the drivers seat, and the rear SAMs fail due to water intrusion as well.

My 2013 C63 with M156 ticks for loud 3-5 mins and quiets down, it’s usually when the car has been sitting few several weeks without being started. I try to start once a month during storage months and let the oil circulate for a few mins so everything stay nice a lubed up.

Everyone saying how bad the R is has probably never been anywhere near one. Are they quirky? Absolutely. I happen to own a 2008 CDI AMG package version and it’s the most versatile vehicle I’ve owned. AWD at 5100 lbs with 500 ftlb torque (it’s deleted and tuned) and gets 30 mpg. It’s quiet, handles like it weighs 1/2 it’s actual, rides like a Benz, and seats 7. I’m at 214k miles and have many to go! It’s the configuration and capability that counts.

Folks take NOTE!!!! A dealer gave me a Carfax on a Yukon Denali I purchased. I was not super careful and missed that he didn't give me all the pages. He missed the part that the truck had been in a collision in Florida, he forgot to tell me that. 5 years later I took the truck to another dealer to sell it and the manager there told me he couldn't give me what I wanted for the truck because it had been in an accident. That blew me away because I knew I had never had a collision. So read between the lines.

Alex, the coolant color seems to be green. This car should have clear/orange or blue coolant. On my recent w209 CLK purchase, I had this happen to me, someone filled in green "walmart" coolant and babied the car around town for several years. The coolant started boiling at exactly 212F and blew the coolant hose off the radiator, killing both. This also will corrode the cooling internals.

My ‘12 m156 was quiet on cold starts, but I noticed that when I parked on a decline, the camshaft adjusters would rattle for a second. I didn’t want to deal with it so I dumped the car. Had it for 2 months only. Can’t believe the amount of issues this naturally aspirated engine has.
