****Warning**** For all 2024 year 12 VCE students doing general English 3/4, this is an amazing template but remember the new 2024 study design is no longer comparative, so if you do get 2 texts/articles, or in my schools case a article and an audio visual, you do not Compare them, you have to basically write for both of them having similar points of view/something like that - talk to your teacher for more info. 😅😃😃 Good luck with VCE!! 😽

schools actually a joke this was 10x more useful than the 10hours my teacher spent blabbing about his political views

This was my contrarian approach to argument analysis because it was always the most unpredictable section, so by having a template you can reduce the uncertainty. Just some things that might need a bit of clarification: Yes, this template is assuming there are two texts that are saying the opposite to each other. But even if you get two texts saying the same thing, there are always differences so instead of contrasting what the authors are saying, contrast HOW they are saying their arguments (e.g. different tone, audience, style etc). And if a single argument analysis, very simple change, just don’t mention author 2. Yes, that does mean some sentence stems might not work e.g. topic sentences/links, but I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out how to fill in the gaps. This makes the template more flexible for many other articles.

Hey Julian, thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos, right when we need it most! It's absolutely amazing as always. I'm just wondering if we can perhaps access the key points for the paragraphs as a document? It would be really helpful to have on the side when writing essays. Thanks again

Hey Julian, thanks so much for another extremely high-quality video! I was just wondering, if the article was based on an issue that was not under heated public discourse, do you have any examples of ways you would start off your essay? Thanks in advance
@JLTutoring2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words :) If there is no extreme debate, you can begin with “In light of … (recent issue), debate / concern has arisen due to…” or simply just mimic the wording in the background information

Your videos are insanely helpful for this part of english. I know that you have resources on your website such as written papers but I was wondering if you do tutoring?

If you search 'english tutoring' in VCE discussion space, most tutors there are very high achievers and so you can pick tutors that are doing your texts. I'm not exactly sure which ones you are doing, but for general tutoring, I personally know Maya Sanjana and can highly recommend her

Would we need to reference tone usage in our introduction as well?
@JLTutoring Жыл бұрын
You can actually integrate "tone" into your intro by using an adverb - like if the tone is aggressive, then you can say "The author aggressively contends that vapes should be banned" - this sentence not only includes the tone but also the contention (so saves words)

Thanks Luke, appreciate it! I currently only have the link to the sample essay doc - which is in the description working fine. As for the other doc, I can't seem to find it, but it is just a transcript of what I had on the slides in this video (pretty much just a copy and paste)

Hi, Your videos are really amazing! Thanks for your time making them. I was wondering what would your template be for analysing a visual?
@JLTutoring2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much :) The template I use is the SSS structure - which I cover in this video (skip to 8:40 for image structure) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnbOaZKDrbKalcU&ab_channel=JLTutoring

hi! ive only found your videos now, and i have never heard of "argument type" before?! i did not know i needed to know this...as my teachers have never taught anything about the type of argument. is this a crucial part of language analysis, or can i go by without it? thanks !
@JLTutoring2 жыл бұрын
Hey @cee, it is not necessary to say 'logical argument' etc, if you implicitly mention the argument type elsewhere. For example, if you talk about how the writer has a logical tone or sympathetic tone - and that would be equivalent to saying the author has a logical argument or sympathetic argument. This is definitely one of the more nuanced areas since some confuse argument type with the tone, but the main difference is that argument type is a broader term. For example, you can have a health-based argument or a political argument (but not a political tone) So it is good to include to add more nuance in your essay, even if it is just a few words

Ur not meant to compare them. That’s completely not what to do 😈😈
@JLTutoring2 жыл бұрын
It depends on whether it is a single argument analysis or one with multiple articles. Comparing is an option when there are multiple articles. While I agree that you don't have to compare them, comparing makes it easier for you to stand out.
