I'm a bit of a chemist and a perfume hobbyist/enthusiast. Seeing this makes me want to have my own, small scale laboratory (and a better budget). Also, it's nice to see the similarities: the fragrance flacons, pipettes, dispensers, etc. My understanding is that each perfume has had on average 800 test fragrances, before going to market! Astounding. Here she is talking about 1 in 10. That's quite impressive.

I am also a perfumery enthusiast. I am currently experimenting with the raw materials at home. The thing how to construct the perfume is totally hidden by a very nice marketing curtain and only this is shown to consumers we are. It needs years to learn, spread the chemical knowledge and really master the perfumery raw materials in different dilutions to figure out what to do. Perfumery is about chemical and mathematical precision, scales and calculations, using synthetics and naturals combined. The whole think is really passionating. I had an opportunity to visit Grasse and International Perfume Museum, a really outstanding place.

How much does it cost for a business to develop a fragrance with them I wonder? Perfumes are usually very expensive, they must charge quite a lot...
@patrickdunster37465 жыл бұрын
This depends. You heard her say that she did some for premium and some for other categories or segments. We would be one of those segments, we are in the Masstiege perfume segment, so our products are slightly cheaper than premium, but higher than mass products. I can say that per kg, the perfume oil, which is what is the perfume is based on is about Euro 100 or so per kg. Chanel , as example, would spend much more than this. The higher the price of the perfume oil, the better it is obviously and the better the ingredients. Some ingredients, such as Oud, Real Rose, Real Jasmine, Ambergris are too costly, so a lot of people will look for synthetics or an equivalent. I think before one would make a perfume it is better to have your Marketing or Product Brief and also start with your brand DNA. If it is just a personal thing, companies such as Givaudan, would not even give you the time of day. They would be selling TONS or thousands on thousands of kg of perfume oil to people such as Chanel and even us. There are hundreds of fragrance development companies however, and not all in France as well...so you might be able to find cheaper and closer to home.

Look up flavor & fragrance companies in your city, then go to each of their websites to see if they have jobs/career sections... if you are in a major metropolitan city, maybe you have a Firmenich facility you can check out. They are one if the biggest fragrance producing companies. There was one near me but they moved about an hour away so sadly its too far :( But do some searching online & you could get a start in any company that develops flavors, fragrances or scents for other businesses in any way.

tbh going through the profile of perfumers it seems they tend to have formal training, for example the woman on this video went to Givaudan Perfumery School, which claims to be behind the perfumers of 1/3 of perfumes in the market. And there's already a lot of competition between the students to get into these companies, but idk, to me it seems that going to perfumery school is the best option.
