There is a perfume issue that has bothered me for some time. I come from "back in the day." I remember being on a theatre tour when I turned 18. A woman in the cast took me out, so I could choose my signature perfume. I chose Madam Rochas. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever smelled. In those days, we were also instructed to use perfume modestly on our pulse points, and rub our wrists together to bring out the scent. We would also never choose a perfume when we first used a spritz on our skin in the store. The perfume had to settle on our skin for a while before we could assess whether it suited us and the make up of our skin. Cut to modern times. First, I slowly realised the perfume I have always used no longer smelt the same. Then I noticed that modern perfumes seem to be lovely (a couple of them, anyway) then, sometimes within minutes, the perfume is no longer present. I checked this with some women friends of various ages and they complained of the same thing. I watched a video not so long ago where the advice was never to rub your wrists together...Weird. There was also no mention of letting the sample of a new perfume mature on the skin. I discovered that there is a market for vintage perfumes. This is somewhat dodgy because you don't really know what you're buying. I managed to afford some vintage Madam Rochas. The smell was back! Not only that, but the full aroma matured on my skin and lasted all day and into the next. Having the need to shower, I couldn't tell you how long it lasted. I can just tell you that it does. So, what is the deal here? I sort of concluded that modern perfumes no longer contained natural substances, but have been exchanged for cheaper chemical ones? and/or the modern perfumes contain more alcohol? There is no doubt that something is wrong with modern perfumes. Can you shed any light on this?

In general there’s no reason modern perfumes should be lower quality but there are potential reasons for what you experienced. Firstly, some base notes like oakmoss are now restricted on safety grounds. Secondly, it’s possible that people are now less patient and like perfumes that smell great straight away, which often means using less strong basenotes in favour of softer musky ones.

May I ask what the texture of your vintage perfumes are like? In my country concentrated perfumes are fairly popular which have a syrupy texture and need to be rubbed for the scent to settle into the skin and develop. They also last way longer and mostly use natural ingredients. The only downside I would say is that I've fallen in love with many modern scents and have yet to find the same dna in the concentrated perfumes.

Formulas change sometimes, either because the availability/affordability of certain ingredients change, or EU regulations decide something is unsafe. Anyway, there's no reason to buy new frags when ebay is full of classics going for less money.

Yes I have experienced the same, modern perfumes don’t last longer than an hour or two. On the other hand try old perfume oils and it lasts for a week , in our country we call them Attar or Ittar. It does not come in spray bottles but roll-ons or dab on wrist from bottle. The logic behind it is apply it in body areas that heats up more example ear lobes, behind neck, wrist etc so that the oil heats up every time you heat up and then it leaves an aroma from time to time 😊

I'm very interested in perfumery, i used to try to make new perfumes by mixing different perfumes when I was a kid lol. I love perfumes so much, people find them unnecessarily expensive but in my opinion they're really worth it because they have the ability to change our emotions in a good and remarkable way. I'm an organic chemist who just made my first fragrance compound (heliotropin or piperonyl aldehyde - the essensce of heliotrope I've made by oxidative cleavage of piperic acid originally derived from piperine isolated from Piper nigrum / Black pepper) and this brought me here. This is all very interesting and never knew there is such a world to explore. The perfumery industry looks just as rich as the dye industry (I was making mostly organic dyes). I think I will provide more synthetic compounds for the amateur perfumers :)

@@sammacer Yes I know. There are alternatives like helional, but I am not planning to sell either. I was just curious how the original compound in L'Heure Bleue (Guerlain) actually smells. I was learning oxidative cleavage reactions, having piperine at hand and thus stumbled upon this compound, hence found the perfume and this video (mostly procrastinating actual learning chemistry).

I recently received a set of good quality essential oils and I started to make blends. I wanted them not only to smell good, but also to have certain aromatherapeutic properties. And because my base is jojoba oil and almond oils, I also take the skincare properties into account. I know it's different from making perfumes, but similar in a way. And what I realized is that first, you have to know your scents, your ingredients, and another thing is it does require specific olfactory imagination to be able to mix scents, and I think it's not something you can learn easily. Cause you can memorize ingredients and it's properties, but imagining the fragrance of the blend is something different.

Just a note, De Hekserij is dutch. Whenever you see ij or ei together, it's like a Y. You'd pronounce it in english like we pronounce the i in words like "ride" (wide i) with a twang of a as in, well, "as" (wide a), or the y in "why". Not De Hekse-rich, but De Heksery.

Recently, reminiscing about when I found my favourite perfume which was discontinued made me curious about perfumery. I read online it was doable but a skilled craft. Unfortunately there’s so much to starting a brand, and I’m no expert yet, that I couldn’t really make content on it easily at present. Thank you! I would like to do an online course in the future, but currently I don’t have the time and I would want it to be the best possible quality. Hopefully in the future. At the moment I do offer online tutoring. Base notes lasts a long time but often don’t project. Mid notes help give a perfume volume while top notes give it immediate impact upon spraying. They can also cover up base notes which don’t smell good to begin with. I made a video about making perfumes last longer on my channel!

For example the ingrediënts for Creed's silver mountain water are listed online but are there any more secrets or is it really a game of playing with amounts until you get close with the scent?

Side note- what's up with Myrrh, how does one dilute it for spray application if it's mostly insoluble in alcohol?

You should use myrrh resinoid or essential oil, they dissolve fully in alcohol

@@sammacer Hmm. I wonder why the one I have doesn't... my (admittedly, paltry) research says it's one of those heavier oils that's only about 30% soluble in alcohol. Maybe I'll have to try a fragrance oil?

Recently went to Egypt and bought some oils. As soon as I got back to the states I started watching your videos and bought some EAS40B200. Just finished making my first bottle and I believe it came out great 👌🏽 skin didn’t burn so 10/10 😂 I meant to purchase 190 proof but I must’ve added 200 by accident. All good though

Thank you so much for the basic introduction. I want to make a perfume for myself, but I wasn't sure what else goes into a perfume besides the nice smelling stuff. I knew about alcohol, but I wasn't sure if glycerin had to be added, or something else... you made it much simpler for me to go ahead and try. I do also have one question - could the formulations of raw materials explained here be used equally well to make solid perfumes - ie: using a wax base rather than alcohol base?

Thank you! And kind of… many of the same principles apply, but raw materials will perform differently and some may not dissolve in wax at all; so if that what you’re interested in you should learn your raw materials in wax from the get go or you might get confused

For aquiring synthetics. Firstly small max 100 ml very expensive but pure samples Can be bought from chem suppliers, I would recommend looking at either global suppliers like sigma aldrich or local ones. If you have access to lab space, and are allowed. synthesis of esters(hardy and durable often pleasantlyfragrant molecules) is quite easy, and a common practice excercise for students.
