Business Insider UK visited three different workshops to see how the masks are made for the world famous Carnival of Venice.
The traditional masks are made in papier maché and are decorated with things like gold leaf, feathers, or gems.
The Carnival of Venice began in the 12th century, it bloomed during the Renaissance period but was disbanded during the late 18th century.
The festival was restored in 1979 and has grown in popularity since then.
Watch the video to see how the masks are made.
Special thanks to workshops La Bottega dei Mascareri, Magie di Carnevale, and Ca' Macana.

I own a mask from Sergio that I bought in his Venice store (the one at 2:15 actually!). He was such a kind man. Loved talking with him

Hmm... I've been workshopping some ideas on paper for some time- all numbers and measurements, admittedly more akin to blueprints than concept art. I find it interesting that the masks are made in molds, focusing on the exterior shape to get the right look. It certainly makes sense, masks (particularly ones descended from theatre like 16th century comedy mentioned in the video but also ancient greek plays) have a personality of their own and for the purposes of the craftsmen, building the shape around the personality of the mask rather than the shape of the wearer allows for reusing molds. I've been playing around with the idea of a face cast that a mask is somwhat "sculpted" onto in papier mache, in order to exactly fit the face, though of course there are things to take into account for the sake of comfort, some freedom of expression beneath the mask, and the like. And obviously most mask interiors wouldn't fit to the face all the way through even in the more desirable circumstances, like a bauta mask jutting away in the lower half... It does make me wonder though, of the idea of pressing the mask between the mask's shape mold and a face cast, almost stanmping the face onto the inside for more accurate fit. Lots to think about, lots to consider...

I figured most of it out. The only thing I have no clue about is how to make the chalk mould. Does someone know how to do it?

Making the mold is very complex and you have to make a clay sculpture first.

@@magiedicarnevale9549 I can do the sculpture, but how to follow up then?

@@MortredMaul it is not enough to know how to make a sculpture, the sculpture must be made without undercuts. That is why it is a complex craft profession... Once the clay model is made you can create the plaster mold on top. The mask will be created inside the plaster mold in negative. =)

@@magiedicarnevale9549 I see. Like I said, I totally understand the process how it is done. What I don't know is the technical components and the worksteps I need to create the plaster mold.
