Yup! Everyone one of these era trucks here in PA has rotten rockers, cab corners, fenders, beds, etc, which means you can't even drive it on the road due to annual safety inspections...I even see 2010 era trucks rusting out around here! Its really sad given how expensive these are to buy anymore. Only way to make them last around here is to get them undercoated/oil coated as soon as you buy it, and get it re applied if you intend it to last more than 10 years without needing rust repair.

@upon17724 жыл бұрын
@@alaskarailroad3996 Problem isn't that they don't run. Stupid PA inspections don't permit them on the road because of the rust. I've got an 06 Envoy with a 5.3l engine...runs great, but I've had to get the frame repaired on it twice in the last 3 years just to keep it on the road, and the rust issues aren't exclusive to GM vehicles...all cars around here exhibit the same issues with rust after 10-15 years.

PSTuners no. I’ve heard a lot of conflicting info on that. I know guys with 200k plus that never removed it. I’ve heard people say to tune it out (turn it off) and then others say you have to swap out the rockers to truly get rid of it. I’ve also hear as long as you don’t stay in deactivated mode for extended periods it isn’t harmful. 🤷🏻♂️

I have a 98 z71 silverado with a 350 and has 262k miles on it. It's's still running strong, the body is straight, no rust, with no clear coat fade, and every electronic on it still works, which surprises me, since it's common for these trucks electricals to fail.

I had a 1998 C1500 Silverado package that was the one truck I regret selling. I sold it in 2017 for $6000 so I did good but the truck was solid. 224k on the clock and it still ran like a dream, didn’t burn oil and was still running with the original engine and trans. The only issue I ever had was intake gaskets. Oh and I also had the original poppet spider injectors as well. I miss my truck...

Got to agree about the 454. It is terrible on gas and it is kind of slow, but it has all the grunt and it sounds awesome. Back then dependability was the priority. Now with fuel mileage and emissions being the priorities engines don't seem to last as long. Which is worse for the environment: burning more gas or scrapping a ten year old vehicle?

The GMT400 is one of the best trucks GM ever made. I daily drive one myself, which is a 98 K1500 (4x4 Z71 package) with the 350 and 4 speed auto. If you take good care of the truck, they will run for miles. In my opinion, it was the last good truck GM made.

I'm a ford guy but those GM's were very good trucks. Only major complaint I had was the wide turning circle. High speed cornering was excellent, brakes were massive, the corporate 14-bolt rear axle was bullet proof, wind noise at speed was minimal minimal. I could go on and on. Factory stereo and 4wd actuators were a common failure point. Rust is a problem in the cab corners anywhere they salt the roads but copious amounts of zinc coated steel did help control it. All in all, a very well made truck. Especially when compared to what can go wrong on the new ones.

You are definitely correct about the Indiana road salt and rust. I recently redid mine because of it. I had to remove the bed and hand sand and wire brush it and air compressor blow off. Then washed it to paint with liner

My 92 GMC first thing I did was buy from the dealer the cup holder for $50 from the 93 GMC. My 350 with 373 gears has lots of torque, but mine is a two door stepside which is lighter than the all metal bed. The factory stereo went out even the clock, I went through Factory 1 replaced the factory stereo with factory equipment and they added an AUX to the amp so I use bluetooth with the factory stereo. I have the 4x4 low range they quit including in new trucks, I recently pulled a ladies SUV out of the ditch she fell into, was like paper weight for the truck. AC was all swapped out and 134A changed instead of R12 freon.
