Have a 2000 Silverado with the 5.3 has 306,000 miles, paid a 1,000 bucks for it, installed a ranch hand brush guard for another 1,000. A month ago a lady failed to yield at a intersection, hit her at 35 mph , the guard destroyed her nissan rogue, my air bag didn't deploy, have a bent fender and bent the guard a little. Her insurance company total my truck, gave me 4,183 bucks and I keeped the truck. Straightened up the guard and rebuilt the whole front suspension that was worn out not damaged from the crash, put two new tires on and a rack and pinion and new brakes all the way around, did everything myself except tires, about $1,300 for everything, and it drives like new. Still have enough money left for a rebuilt motor when the tine comes. People have lost there mind paying 60-80 grand for a dam truck, just my opinion of course. Everything this man says is the truth, and to all the typewriter trolls, go suck it.

I'm right there with you. Over the years, I have bought a string of GMT-400 trucks for under a $1000. each. When an engine or tranny gave up, I just bought another truck. I'd get a couple of years out of an $800. truck. There's no way I'm going in debt for a new truck. I've got better things to spend my money on!

I hear you!! I had a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4. About 200,000 on it. Gave it to my son for a business (March 2024) he was starting. I maintained it religiously. Engine and trans oil changed at just below average mileage, cooling system flushed fresh coolant, hoses belts every 3-5 years, live in the desert, very dirty. I did some mods to it, aftermarket Volant air box, headers, Flowmaster exhaust, added the electric cooling fans, because even when new it really didnt cool that great ( towing water trailers out in the desert for wild life drinkers, 5 mph the fastest) here driving around town, highway it was fine. I bought myself a good used 2017 Tundra. I just wished when I bought it back then, I would have got a double cab, I probably would have kept it and helped my son buy a used truck.

The area I live you won't find a truck that runs for less than $4,000 and that would be a total rust bucket. A couple of years ago I found a 93 WT, 8' bed, 4.3 automatic, no air, zero rust or body filler for $7,500. Beautiful garage kept with 81,000 miles on it. The seat is almost like new. The dash has some cracks. Which I don't understand the dash cracks if kept in the garage out of the sun. Last week I put a water pump and hoses on in less than a half day. Last summer an alternator on in about 15 mins. Had to do a break light bulb, 5 mins. Kind of knew what I was getting because I purchased a new one back in 92 for $9,200 and drove it pulling construction trailer for 278,000 miles and traded it still in good operating condition. I got a 72 Ranger XLT short bed in nice condition that hardly ever comes out of my garage. I use the Chevy. for my daily runs to the store hardware bank, dirt gravel so on. Retired and have a 2022 Forester to cruise out of town. And typewriter trolls go suck it hard sideways! Ha Ha

I bought my 2006 F150 4x4 w/ heavy duty paylaod package and 8ft bed NEW with 0% financing. The frame rusted out 2 years ago so i found a rust free 2005 with the same 8ft bed and heavy payload package ( 7 lug wheels) for 2700$. It had a bad cam and high miles (274k). I swapped my 125k mile drivetrain into it in my driveway and did the timing chains while it was out as preventative maintenance and it saved me from buying a newer truck during the high price craze of the last couple years. Ill keep driving it as long as possible. DEFINITELY prefer older trucks for the ease of fixing them compared to all the new electronic crap and fancy hardware that will fail. I need an 8ft bed for hauliing drywall and lumber for work. 8ft beds are hard to find anymore.

First Gen OBD II GM trucks are among the best ever made... 14 years ago, I bought a 1999 Chevy Astro cargo van with 157K miles on the odometer at 11 years old for $1800. I drove it on a 250 mile delivery route six nights per week for three years, and since then have used it as my work vehicle for doing handyman work and office cubicle installations. Today, it has 389K miles on the original engine and transmission. I've replaced intake gaskets twice, PS pump/gear twice, fuel pump three times, AC compressor three times, and torque converter once (at 300K), but the block, heads, and gearbox are all original. I'm anticipating another 100K and ten years of service.

I had a '90 Silverado, most excellent truck. I basically traded it in because at the time, I didn't have room for it. That is what you should consider - Big azz storage building for old truck, boat, mowers, ice machine, man cave, whatever, and it's a no brainer. Example: look at where the bass pros keep their rigs, big metal buildings with huge doors on both ends out of the weather.

I have a 99 Silverado 1500 4x4 with the 5.3 v8 and 315,000 miles on the engine and it still has plenty of life left no smoking or knocking. The 4L60E transmission was replaced with a new trans at 250,000 miles due to neglect from the previous owner, which I am still repairing other parts of the truck like rust on the body panels, Exhaust manifold bolts breaking and frame rust which the 99s all suffer from. It's a very reliable truck especially for the age. I bought it for $500 a year ago due to the frame rust.

Great video. Lots of good points made. For anyone looking for a simple easy to work on truck consider the 89-95 C/K1500 they are pre ODB2 so you just need a paper clip to run diagnostics(not a scan tool). These years use a simple fuel delivery system that you can see/test just by removing the air filter. If you like the newer interiors look for a 95, only year with the old engine and newer interior.

2008 Chevy-“LD” model…300k with a motor rebuild last year. Has the solid, no frills 4.8. You are absolutely on target…. This “clunker” of mine will last forever. Not to mention parts are made everywhere for it…US, China, Taiwan,…etc. and the nice thing about a clunker….since it’s used, when you need shocks, or brakes you’re thinking it probably does need the new part and you’re kinda of happy to have it taken care of. Lastly you can’t get this config…mine is the extended cad with the rear opening doors. Very convenient. So, thanks for the video…a “shade tree mechanic” can do a lot of the upkeep to keep it running. I suspect these older trucks are probably the last truly capable and reliable ones we‘ll see. Thanks!

This truck came as a incomplete unit from the factory, & had a Heil dump body installed from American Truck equipment that was ordered from a local Chevrolet dealer, & came with dual fuel tanks, Tinted windshield, A/C, AM-FM radio, Power steering, & a automatic trans. & just hit 53,000 miles on the clock I traded a couple of old boats, & about $2,500 cash for it. & have received quite a few offers for it for $10,000. I've had the truck for about 7 years now, & have only put about $2, 000 into it, & most of that was for normal stuff trans. filter, & fluid change, Front steer tires, & ball joints, & A/C repair. The truck only gets used on my property for bringing gravel, & soil in, & to hall out tree debris from storms. This is 1 Chevy Truck that is built like a ROCK💪💪💪💪💪. I don't know how long I'll keep it, But I do know I'll get more than what I paid for it. I also own a 03 Silverado extended cab that I bought new & still is very reliable with a 5.3 & only has 82,000 on the clock; I remember when I bought it new I said this will be the last new truck I'll buy, & this one will never be put up for sale as long as I can still drive it.

I have a 1996 S10 larger cab with third door, 4.3L, 5 speed manual, 4wd with only 90k miles. It’s not garaged, so the hail has dented it and the high-altitude Colorado sun have faded the paint and deteriorated the cheap plastics in and out, although the drivetrain is great. It’s my Home Depottruck for hauling materials, used to help move friends, bring home new furniture and appliances and as a fishing truck. It’s mildly lifted, so during the few days a year my Outback high centers on the snow I can still make it out. It’s perfect for my needs. My quandary is I’ve just inherited a 2000 Ford Ranger supercab 4wd mildly lifted, auto, 4.0L with 147k in great shape mechanically and cosmetically in and out. I don’t really need three vehicles. I’m tempted to sell the Outback as it has 220k, and the 3.0 H6 gets worse mpg than the Chevy does. It’s just that it seats four which comes in handy now and then. The S10 and Ranger just have unsafe little fold-down seats not even safe for a little kid. What should I do?

I have a ‘96 Silverado 4x4 that has 235000 miles now. I bought it eleven years ago when it had 143000 miles, I am the 3rd owner. It cost $4500 and the biggest cost to me has been two transmissions. The first rebuild didn’t last very long. The second one by Cottman is still doing great after 3 years. I’ve replaced the A/C, front end suspension, intake fuel delivery and all under hood sensors at least once, and the radiator. I have spent about $ $9500 on purchase and breakdowns. Yes, this will be my forever truck UNLESS a large amount of cash is offered.

I have a 1999 Silverado z71 ext. cab 301,600 miles. All original power and drive train except u joints and hub assemblies , it keeps on going and runs great. Looks good in and out. Except for the rusty rocker panels. I thought about trading it in, but not today’s prices. I think I I’ll just keep it and get the rocker panels replaced.

I got a 95 k1500 z71 w/148000 mi that is my daily driver, I bought it for $2k about 2 yrs ago and I've put about 6K into it for replacement parts & repairs, mostly done by me & I'm not a mechanic but like u said, these trucks are very basic & easy to work on & most of the parts for it are cheap. I have the 5.7 350 TBI. I love this truck, its drives & runs great & hasn't failed me yet.

Last year I had a hybrid, 99 Ram and 99 Sierra. Figured the hybrid was costing me too much (insurance) so I sold it. Just drive my truck now. In the future you'll see 40 year old 90s trucks on the road, you won't see 40 year old 2020 trucks on the road in the future.

I bought a 2005 1500 4X4 crew cab, 6 years ago, for $3500. USD. Aside from essential maintenance, oil changes, tires, brakes, etc., I've put about $1000. USD into it for new headlights, tail lights, rear bumper, and a few other, mainly cosmetic 'repairs'. I can't even get out of my driveway without seeing one similar (98-05, Chevy or GMC) driving by. They are, arguably, the best trucks ever made. BTW, I'm closing in on 300K miles. If I have to put another engine or transmission in it, for $4000-$5000. each, I would do it without batting an eye.

We got a 1998 W/T 1500 same color combination as yours. 4.3 v6 swb 2wd. I am in the process of putting all electric in the truck. Windows, locks, cruise control, tilt column. The dash is destroyed and i just finished with another dash for it and wiring harness. Its got 237,000 and had the transmission rebuilt. Just want to make it a nice fun truck to cruise in.

98 Z71 Silverado with 119k miles. Just put an exhaust manifold and donut on right side after ear broke off manifold when trying to replace donut. Had since one year old and no hurry to get rid of it. 4WD is nice when the snow gets over 4 inches deep. LoL If you really like easy to work on go back a couple decades. My 75 Chevy half ton has far less electronic controls to deal with. No scan tools required. Back when a 350 V8 engine was easy to climb up and sit on the fender with your feet next to the engine and wrench away with nothing in the way.

I inherited a 1998 Ford F-150 about 8 years ago. Only mechanical repair I have had to make is a new alternator. The AC doesn't blow quite cold as I would like but it is functional. Oh, and a new catalytic converter because some idiot cut mine off and stole it, a block from the local police station.

I have the same truck except the stepside bed with 338,000 on the original 4.3 v6 engine. You are right. Easy to work on and parts are cheap. Plus with only liability insurance that's dirt cheap to. Why bother with full coverage as they will only claim its worth $500 and total it for any scratch anyway. Besides usual maintenance, tires, and some small senors and non major small things, Ive only had to replace brakes, 1 alternator, 1 ac compressor, 2 starters, and the ring and pinion in the last 20 years.

My ‘05 f150 has 120k miles. I looks and runs fantastic! Most strangers think it is a much newer model. I maintain it and if something breaks…it gets fixed. I have not replaced it in the past for the same reasons you talked about. Recently, I’ve been thinking about selling it and buying a new Subaru and take a bunch of trips with my bride of 40 years. Nah…we’ll take the truck on longer trips and her little hybrid for shorter trips…can’t imagine having a car payment😅! THANK YOU!!!

Dad bought one brand new in January 1998. For 32,000 cad… Sticker was 38,000cad 1998 gmc Sierra k1500 5.7 vortec ext cab. Sle grey bucket seats and electronic 4x4 pewter mettalic first year of the colour. I was first to start it when I was 6 at the dealership had 45 miles on it still had plastic on seats. Then dad Gave it too me free when I was 16 in 2008 had 123,000 miles then and Paid for my true dual exhaust no cats and straight pipes. Guess what I still have it today 16-26 years later. And it has 129,000 miles. Still has original rims and engine body and paint etc. Has had new 4l60e Because of me being a kid back then lol. But new one is rated for 500hp it’s quite built.

I have a Chevy but it's a 2015 Equinox. My old clunker truck though, is a 93 Dodge Ram and it just goes and goes, although I have replaced the transmission once and the fuel pump a couple of times, it is generally very reliable but things go awry more and more often the older it gets.

I don't have a Chev or GMC (yet) but have 2 Fords---1997 Ford F150 V 8 5,4 triton 120,000 miles and a 2003 Ford F 150 V 6 4.2 engine 130,000 miles. I will NOT waste my money on a new truck because they don't have many features I prefer. I want a bench seat in front because it gives you more room and more floor space for my feet. The center console on new vehicles they are making today cram me into the seat with no room to relax. If I want to put the truck in Cruise for highway driving there is little room to rest your foot away from the pedal on the floor if you have a middle console between front bucket seats. Plus these older style tracks are simpler and easier to maintain and repair.

One of my vehicles is a 1997 GMC 1500 Savana with a 5.7L. As I have researched selling my conversion van and getting a newish ram promaster or ford transit, I return to investing in my 97. This van I have used for 12 years so far and it owes me nothing, a promaster can’t touch this value even if I can get 5 miles per gallon more.

I buy older vehicles but they're Toyotas. 4 years ago I got a 2006 Tundra with 38,000 miles. 3 months ago I got a Sequoia with 43,000 miles on it. The Tundra has 74,000 miles on it now. Paid $32,000 for both and couldn't get either for under $60k new. Both will last longer than what any manufacturer is putting out these days. I don't drive either as daily drivers so they'll last forever. Have a Camry with 175,000 miles that's my daily driver. ( 2013 model I bought new for $22k )

Preaching to the choir KGR. I've still got my Chevy G10 van (1975) and my Dodge D150 pickup (1979). Simple is good. Yeah, gas mileage is horrible by today's standards, but take the total cost of ownership and it compares well with 21st century alternatives.
