I've been using the MSI RTX 4070 SUPER VENTUS 2X graphics card over the last 2 weeks to play games at 4K resolution. In this video, I'll show you what kind of experience you can expect in terms of performance, graphics settings, and image quality.

The Rx 7600 8gb works at 4k...that's not the point. Its a stuttery mess. Because of vram limitations. Especially when enabling FG. And if you have to use heavy upscaling, then what's the point playing at 4k?.. Also, I believe the 3080 will perform a little better/smoother because it has a larger bus width. The 4070super is 12gb but with 192 bus width...

How??? I play at the same settings, but I have a RX 7600, and my AW2 ran in 42 fps where you were on the map, in the middle of the forest. 12 fps difference between RX 7600 and RTX 4070 Super??? Also, you can play with raytracing. I render the game at 720p upscaled to 4k, low preset settings, pathtracing and raytracing on low, and I average 29 fps by the body.

Is the monitor good as a VA panel? Aren't there any ghosting visible? I'm not well versed when it comes to display panels, but I've always heard or read that IPS is better than VA and TN. I only have a 24" 1080p 165Hz IPS monitor. I have the same GPU and I actually prefer Cyberpunk running 1440p RTX on this monitor with DLSS and frame gen over 1080p, but there aren't a lot of 1440p IPS monitors within my budget, I can mostly see VA ones that I can afford. I'm adamant to not buy one because I've read and heard that VA panels usually have ghosting that breaks the experience.

4060 Ti is ~ 3070 performance. I'm not sure as I haven't tried the 16GB 4060 Ti yet. But I suspect, that you'll have to make some compromises in the newest games. RTX 4070 is what I'd say is a good 1440p GPU. But then the 4070 SUPER is just $50 more for a lot more performance... It's a difficult choice if you have a flexible budget. Just don't buy the RTX 3070 for 1440p. 8GB of memory is not enough to unlock it's potential in 2024.

Very nice! I wish had that as well🙂 It is more suitable for 4K thanks to 16GB of memory. Also, performance is better. Requires fewer compromises in the latest AAA games.

9:22 I am curious as to what's the fps if it's on High settings + DLSS Quality (I don't every play with max settings) I always go just below the max or even another step down just before Medium (if the game has that kind of choice)

There is very little FPS difference between Very High and High presets. About 3-5 FPS in my experience. That's why I stick with Very High. Medium does offer way more FPS. But some textures as well as draw distance are noticeably worse.

I've used my RX 6800 for some 4k gaming. Not perfect but can still give a decent 4k experience. With ReBar on, it can match or get very close to an RTX 4070/3080 which is pretty damn nice. In Cyberpunk I run Medium Settings - ultra textures with FSR Ultra Quality enabled and I run at a locked 60 FPS at 4k. Medium settings + ultra textures +FSR Ultra Quality seems to be a very good combo to get it to run even AAA games at 4k.

LoL, yeah😄 There's no way around it. A way more powerful GPU is needed to run Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2 with ray tracing. Those games are way too demanding. Surprisingly, ray tracing in the latest most beautiful game (Hellblade 2) is performing fine on the 4070 SUPER at 4K. I use maximum graphics preset + DLSS Balanced to enjoy the game. So, the 4070 SUPER continues going strong at 4K in 2024💪

I'd go for at least a Ryzen 5 7600/7600X or an i5 13600K/14600K. But ideally, Ryzen 7 7800X3D or the i7 14700K/13700K.

What are your thoughts on curved vs flat monitors? Alienware has a curved 4K OLED monitor which looks good, but not sure bout curved.

If the curve is not super aggressive then I don't mind. With this monitor I have I don't notice it. So, I guess it works as intended.

To use frame generation you really need as close to 60 base frame rate as you can get. Do you not have horrible latency?

I find that in most games of this kind I'm OK when base FPS is at around 50. Which it is in this case. Latency is fine in my opinion. Otherwise I'd drop some of the settings because I hate when mouse feels like it's lagging behind too much.

To me, MSI MPG 321URX looks interesting. It's a 4K 32 inch 240Hz monitor. Other companies have similar offerings. I haven't tried any of them, but I'm very much looking forward to it. I think OLED gaming monitors are currently the pinnacle of PC gaming.

@@theivadim Yeah, I haven't stepped up to 4k just yet because I'm waiting for OLEDs to reach mass market pricing. Real HDR and 4k will be fantastic once they are truly doable for most of us.

I think one of the main benefits of going PC for gaming over consoles is getting 60+fps more often and having upgradeability. While DLSS and frame gen should make the process fine at 4k ray tracing is pretty much dead and those 12gbs of VRAM will start bleeding to ram often. I also have a 4070 Super with a 7800x3d and I would rather have Ultrawide 1440p to 16:9 4k and that it lasts longer before I feel like upgrading, but I wish you luck if you're happy with that setup!

Indeed, I wish it had 16GB. But it'll do for now. Until RTX 50-series arrives. Hopefully with higher memory capacity. I like ultrawide monitors as well. But if we are talking 4K 32 inch vs 3440x1440 34 inch, then I'll pick 4K 32 inch every time. It's just personal preference. I like having a taller screen. But there are some amazing tall 2160p ultrawide monitors out there. They are way too expensive for me at the moment tho. I hope to try one in the future.🙂

It's difficult to quantify that. All I can say is that upgrading to the next step of the resolution always feels very good. Especially going from 1080p to 1440p at 27 inch screen size.

I have 4070 RTX and tested on for 4K screen and games most games from 2020-2021 on High setting DLSS on 60fps is good option but not for 2024. Main problem od VRAM if it was 16GB and 256bit it was different story.

I use my 4070 at 1080p. I play cod warzone mainly which only uses 5-6gb of vram at ultra settings. I’m probably gonna stick with my 1080p 240hz as I only rly play fps games

The only issue is the 12gb vram. In few games we already run out like ratchet and clank or Hogwarts legacy. I need to lower graphics settings or to turn off ray tracing. So really in this case just to grab an amd card. Cheaper and better raster performance

@@50H3i1 I don´t care what you or anyone calls to graphic cards. I just think our community is annoying. No one needs to play everything on Ultra. Nowadays you play a story game with Normal Preset graphcis at 4k and it looks absolutely stunning. You only need high amounts of VRam if you are using everything on Ultra DigitalFoundry is an excellent channel for comparisions and they usually need a magnifier to spot differences between PC maxed out and Console. The only noticeable thing is the framerate, wich is very important to me and that´s why I play on PC. If you are after using Ultra settings everytime on everygame, be prepared for the rabbit hole and the thousands of dollars you will need to spend in your life to be able to do so all the time.

I’d build 4070 Super + Ryzen 5 7600X instead. That’s what I’m using to play the latest games at 4K right now. Better performance now and additionally AMD’s AM5 platform will be supported until 2027+. So, you’ll be able to easily upgrade your CPU. No need to re-build the entire PC. Imho, building an Intel PC makes no sense right now.

The problem with the 4070 Super is the VRAM and the bandwidth. You'll have to settle for lower textures, or using DLSS to use a lower rendering resolution that uses less VRAM. Any time you go over 12GB of VRAM you'll start to notice hitching and worse frame pacing because memory is stored in system RAM and its slower. AMD's cards are better if you're not going to use Ray Tracing, because they give you 16GB+ of VRAM on their GPU's. I have a 4080 Super, and I feel like its still not enough at 4K and will probably upgrade when the 5080 comes out.

If the game has good DLSS implementation then I'd rather play at 4K + DLSS Balanced than 1440p native. For context, I'm comparing my 27 inch 1440p monitor vs the 31.5 inch 4K you see in this video. Even with the bigger screen size the 4K monitor has much better pixel density. I value that a lot.

@@theivadim that's interesting. I've only played at 1440p (more specifically 3440 1440 oled at the time). DLSS is great, i honestly cannot tell a diff when DLSS is quality on most games. Balanced is when it gets a little soft for me, but this is 1440p balanced not 4k balanced.

Yeah. DLSS gets better at higher resolutions. At 1080p even DLSS Quality looks not that great. But 4K Balanced looks fine to me. Quality at 4K looks brilliant. But I agree with you as well. DLSS Quality at 1440p looks the very good to my eye. Absolutely loving this tech. I'm looking forward to seeing what NVIDIA is cooking next in DLSS 4. One thing I'd like to see tho is developers updating DLSS version in older games. Most games are stuck with whatever version of DLSS was available at the time of launch. And that's a shame as newer versions have much better image quality. Fewer artifacts, ghosting, etc.

Totally agree 👍 Although, I do wish I had a better graphics card to enjoy Alan Wake 2 with ray tracing enabled. Some scenes in that game are insanely good on higher graphics settings.

@@theivadim I totally agree with you there. Even though I didn't do a full system upgrade I did purchase my first 42 inch 4k 120/138hrtz G7 with a Asus Rog RTX 4080 for good measure. What I found was a sweet spot locked around 86 fps with my Ryzen 5800X3D setup. Waiting to see what Zen 5 brings to table to give the 4080 a nice boost. I still believe you get a good bang for buck with the 4070 Super. Cheers!

It's worth waiting for Zen 5 3D cache version then🙂 That should be pretty good. I just hope that AMD will launch the 8-core 3D model sooner or at the same time as other variants. It was not cool of AMD to delay the 7800X3D launch by 1 month compared to the 7950X3D.

Only problem the 4070 Super has with 4k is the 12GB of VRAM in some games. Resident Evil 4 Remake does not support DLSS so to play in 4k it has to be native which is fine because the RE Engine is the most efficient gaming engine but only problem? It uses a lot of VRAM so even though the 4070 Super has enough raw power to play resident evil 4 in native 4k on its highest preset while getting 60+ FPS it won't do it smoothly because it goes well beyond the 12GB VRAM limit many times so you have to manual drop down texture quality which looks worse or play it in its lower preset which drastically lowers some graphic settings like the hair. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is another that is VRAM hungry game. It is capable of playing it at its highest quality preset with DLSS Quality and get 60+ FPS but again it won't' because of VRAM so you have to drop the settings down. Same thing weirdly enough with last gen RE Engine titles like Resident Evil 2 Remake. Even though the 4070 Super has more than enough Raw Power to play the game in native 4k at its highest pre set and get 100+ FPS, it wont because again the game will pass the VRAM limit and sometimes even crash. Obviously I rather tinker with the settings to play any game in 4k rather than playing it in 1440p but that 12GB VRAM causes problems for a few titles but it is still capable of 4k gaming. I'd still pick the 4070 Super over even a 7900 xtx if im trying to play in 4k because of how good DLSS is. Only game I wasn't able to get 60 FPS in 4K DLSS Quality was Alan Wake 2 which got over 50 but not 60. Turn on Frame Gen though and you got a solid 4k gaming experience It's crazy how many PC Gaming reviewers try to convince you 4k gaming is only possible with a 4090 haha When I'm playing an Esport game yes I want 120+ FPS and don't care as much about graphics but when playing tripple A Games? All I want is at least 70+ FPS and amazing draw dropping 4k graphics and even the 4070 Super is able to accomplish that. That being said I was able to get an open box 4070 Ti Supper for $700 so I returned my 4070 Super and now I'm having no problem with VRAM restraints lol

Good points, I agree. I swapped my 4080 with 4090 only recently so that I could play cp2077 with PT as it was pretty rough on 4080, moreover it's still rough on 4090 as well, but I went up by 30 - 35fps, hence to me it is worth it and on 4k, 30fps makes huge difference.

4K on DLSS is not 4k, is upscale resolution, also using frame generation which means the card is generating fake frames, do not enable those options and check how your card is really handling that game. A 4070 card is not meant to play 4K.

Apart from the fact that the symbols are smaller, which I like less, I don't see any difference between 1080P and 4K. I recently turned up a game from 2013 in 4K with DSR, so calculate 4K and scale it down to 1080P and I don't see any difference and what the PC in the video For me, the whole RGB would have been deactivated before using the PC and when it comes to ray tracing and DLSS, I always deactivate ray tracing and I only use DLSS if the PC has problems maintaining 30 or 60 FPS, otherwise never but I stick with my standard 1080P resolution also with my 4070 without ti without supper (Translated with google translator) (For me, ray tracing is also called scrap tracing)

А всё остальное пусть остаётся в андерграунде) Я на 3070 почти все игры прохожу в 4к и люди в комментах пишут этой карты недостаточно)) Да, иногда фризит от недостатка видеопамяти, но 8 гб гддр для 4к и не должно хватать. Я больше удивлён что обычно их хватает. В крайнем случае низкие настройки в 4к это тоже натив 4к. После того как привыкаешь к 4к в фулл хд уже всё кажется мыльным. GRE is much better 4k GPU than Super for less money. With 4k you took RT away from Super and only made GRE looking even better.. Super is 1440p gpu that can be used with 4k screen until you buy something stronger. If it cant do 60 fps at native, forget about it. It only means it will be to weak in some games and that sucks, esc on big 4k screen. There are games where you cant hide defects with dark scenarios or with extra density from nature like in Horizon..

Maybe. I haven't tried it yet. Would like to give it a go tho. Hopefully, I'll be able to get my hands on some AMD GPUs soon. One thing that NVIDIA still has over AMD is that DLSS + frame gen is implemented in way more games than FSR 3 (with frame gen). AMD needs to address that soon.

@@theivadim DLSS has the biggest and most realistic lead over fsr in 1440p. Than Super makes sense with RT but at 4K FSR looks quite good as well so i am not sure if dlss is enough. You get more raw power, extra 4gb and quite big boost from overclocking from GRE, in some games huge like in HL.. And there is not so much cutting corners on coolers etc, no plastic backplates on those GPUs..Some of cheaper Supers are terrible and i like to feal some weight in GPU for 600$..

@@theivadim i dont play many titles. I love old indie games like rising storm 2 vietnam, mordhau, gmod, and some newer ones like fall of avalon and morbius. I almost never run into proplems while playing the actual game. If there is an issue its mostly just the UI overlay. When i first got into 32:9 i had problems with mordhau. But that was in beta back in 2017. I think most devs have considered 32:9 these days. At least for in game resolution / aspect ratio, but i dont play many tripple A titles so im not the best person to tell you.

i wouldn't personally reccomend 4k gaming on this card unless you plan to upgrade very near to the future, reason being vram, 12gb simply isn't enough nowadays, also, only 60 fps in horizon forbidden west w fram gen on, yikes, thats gonna cause a loot of input latency

Latency feels OK to me. Base FPS is in the 45-55 range. Frame gen doesn't generate that many frames in this game. So, the latency is fine. I always comment on it when I feel that latency is not good.

Why play 4k then disabling raytracing. Before I do that I'd go back to 1080p + DLSS. Never in 100 years I'd lower only 1 slider of any raytracing option. I never get people who play 4k on medium settings, my eyes hurt from medium shadows/reflections/lighting etc.. Why buy a 4k Monitor in the first place when you only buy a midrange card.

It works well for 4k at the moment but 12gb vram could definitely be problematic in some games. Personally just to be safe, I wouldn't use less than 16gb card for 4K.

Overkill, unless you want all that RT performance and willing to turn max RT in each game. I'd look for 4060ti/7700xt/3070(used)/6800xt(used) etc.

Sure. However, maybe it's time to upgrade to a 1440p monitor? They are pretty cheap nowadays. 1440p experience is much nicer, imho. I'd pick it over 1080p even any day.

Keep your opinion to yourself. 4070 is great at 4k for most. I play at 4k with my 3080 using a Samsung neo G7. Super happy with 3080. I believe 4070 is similar to 3080 so it should be perfectly fine
