Another crappy part of bein a farrier is a very poor Christmas. Alot of backyard horse owners like to put off spending the money to shoe their horses til AFTER the holidays. You can go from a full schedule at the beginning of November to maybe 1 stop a week halfway thru December. I remember yrs ago calling a friendly client crying & asked her to let us come shoe the horses for 30% off so we could get our boy a few gifts & something fun to eat. We don't have those kind of clients anymore. All our clientele now abundantly appreciate Lenny as their farrier. Thank Goodness!

He comes across with a sincere quality about the horses, his craft, and clients. The sincerity is what set them apart, track farriers on traveling farriers. I've met those that are just doing it because it is all they know and those who love it and the difference in the quality of person and their work is immense.

I've no idea why this video is recommended on my front page, while it does not matter! The farrier is a super nice person and to the horses. I love horses pretty much while I never am able to ride a good one.

My old blacksmith started when he was 14, working for his father, his father shod all the mules and horses in Cambridge that were due for shipment to ww1 war front, after that he trained at Newmarket, did his bit during ww2 then went to work for Noel murless, then went free lance as well retired in 1985/86. His body though wasn't to worn. He died aged 96. He loved his job.

Barbara Dyson What a wonderful legacy & story to have n ur family. Those cavalry farriers were the best there was. The US Army Cavalry Manual was THE book for shoeing horses for a very long time. My husband had to learn from it back n the 60s & he still claims that NO shoer should shoe a horse without learning it.

@animeaunty 5 жыл бұрын
D Billycheck Lenny swears by it cuz it puts on paper the fundamentals. When he was learning n the late 60s, there wasn't much literature yet. He still has all his students study it.

@@animeaunty Been shoeing for 40 years and started learning from my grandad at 14..learned from several old Buckaroos when young and then attended a school at 19..the instructor was an old Cavalry Farrier and if i shoe,for the rest of my life,i doubt i will see his equal..

@@TightwadTodd Then I wish u could meet my hubby. God truly made him, from from his flatish feet to his head of thick hair, to shoe horses. It's like he has x-ray vision & can c under the skin to the underlying structures & then dream up the perfect shoe for performance & appearance. He is simply a Master at his craft & still goin at 68. Long ago he even designed & built a shoe for a dude string horse that had his coffin bone fully rotated out thru the bottom of its hoof...totally exposed. He walked off & back n2 the string. That blows my mind! I think he hinged a thin steel plate to the shoe so it could b opened up for treatment & then closed so nothing would make contact with the bone. Apprenticing for 10 years would never b enuf to learn all he has. He's old...when he first moved to Arizona from Ney York, he charged $7 to shoe a horse...I've yet to meet another farrier that could hold a candle & that's sad.

Rooster P. If u r lucky enuf to find a good apprenticeship please stay with them as many years as u can. It's impossible to learn all u need n only 6 months or even 2 years. Back n the old days, apprenticeships lasted 5yrs or often longer. It's WAY worth it if u have to move to another town to work with a Master Farrier. U would never regret it. There r so few Masters left n the US.

Hi I actually work on lots of TB off the track , I would love to ask you a few questions on them and best way to keep them sound. There is terrible shape after their career is over and people pull there shoes and sale them for what ever, I'm having to come behind them and get their hoofs back in shape for mostly Hunt jump, and just pasture mates to others, but I live in south and my speciality is quarter horses , if you ever had a min I could pic your brain I would appreciate it so much. .. I actually rodeo up that way 4 months of year while on tour when I was a younger man. Upstate New York beautiful, painted pony .!. Lol

Word of advice: Lower the music volume or raise the volume of Mike's voice. Edit: The effect you're trying for is working but needs to be finessed so that it's not offensive to the ears.
