As a materials scientist, I would like everyone to understand that the liquid metal did not "dry out" in the usual sense. It reacted with the metal of the heat sink (primarily, from the look of it. The surface of the chip looks basically ok) and what you see on the chip is a residual solid metal of a new composition. It will not be possible to remove the reacted material from the heat sink, as this is incorporated into the heat sink and is in fact an alloy of the heat sink metal and the liquid metal. It may still be possible to use another type of thermal paste to bridge the air gap. This should not be a problem with the PS5 system as it was designed with compatible materials or coatings to enable the use of a liquid metal for thermal contact. One concern would be that as this reaction takes place the thermal contact should/could have been greatly reduced. It is a good thing that this PS4 wasn't used that much.

Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to clarify. When you first apply liquid metal, then you WANT it to actually react with the copper plate! When liquid metal reacts with copper, it creates a layer with conducts heat much more efficiently. When the liquid metal reacts with the copper plate, it seems to “dry-out”. This is because the liquid metal “soaks” into the copper plate. This layer (coating) is what people often describe as the STAIN. Do not remove it. Do not sandpaper it! This is why you should re-apply the liquid metal 3 times every 2-3 month in the beginning. After this period, the coating should fully be formed, providing the most heat conductivity possible. From here on, if there is Gallium in your copper/heat sink/liquid metal, you can re-paste the liquid metal every 1/2 years. If there is no Gallium involved, then you won't ever need to re-paste the liquid metal again. I hope this helps.

No performance issues, the fan is somewhat quiet and manageable. Ocassionally it's spins up and gets annoyingly loud lol. Playing early life cycle/previous gen games like Infamous Second Son, UC4, Lost Legacy: the fan doesn't even spin up. Stays at the same speed that it would when your on the homescreen. Playing mid life cycle games like Horizon Zero Dawn, it gets a little loud but I practically can't hear it due to my TV. Only a select few late life cycle games stress it's hardware and spin up the fans really loud. Marvel's Spider-Man is an example. But it's good enough for me and I'll continue using it this year, with games like HFW, GT7, GOW and many 3rd party titles, I'm gonna hold off on getting the PS5 till 2023. LM is great for use on nickel plated copper heatspreaders. NOT on copper plated aluminum heatsinks. On pure copper heatsinks the gallium diffuses into the copper leaving behind the indium and tin which both provide poor thermal contact and can cause shorts if they break free due to vibration. Plus, you'll have to reapply regularly to maintain proper thermal contact. With copper plated aluminum, that gallium diffuses through the copper and will attack the aluminum. As time goes on in either case you'll have degrading thermals and a system that will die sooner than if you had just stuck to paste. Do not use LM unless the system was designed for it or your components are made of the proper materials to handle it.

The problem with the PS4 cooling is there are two fan variants, one spews dust into a crevice next to the fan and the other spews it directly into the heatsink. The dust builds up overtime and that's why you get PS4's that get very loud. If you are unfortunate enough to get the second fan (like I was) then cleaning it out every now and again (heatsink and all) will completely negate the problem. Metal can’t “dry”. What you see happening is amalgamation. Just search KZbin for gallium and aluminum reaction. The primary component in liquid metal thermal paste is gallium, gallium is highly reactive with some metals. It will turn aluminum into dust in a few hours, reacts slowly with bare copper, and won’t react with nickel plating. After a few years the gallium literally seeped into the bare copper and formed a new alloy, thus appearing “dried out”. This won’t happen with nickel plated heat sinks.

The sad thing for consoles is that Xboxes are limited to SATA 2 and Playstation consoles are connected via USB 3.0 bus to SATA...so, being SATA 3 will only allow to fully saturate the USB 3.0 bus that connects to a SATA converter (Learned about it when fail0verflow talked about the PS4)

@adapalis3 жыл бұрын
I was here when you originally made the video putting LM in this. I'm pretty sure the copper reacted with the LM, it looks corroded and also like it caused a small reaction and started to fuse the metals. I wouldn't use LM in anything not designed for it, alot of people got excited to start changing their existing TIM when Sony started using LM. LM is not designed for the average user in anyway, and I knew when Sony started using it it would start some ridiculous craze where people ruin their tech. Here we are, luckily he caught this before it got worse...Big mistake and anyone that said they were doing it I would make sure to expressly state it is... NOT RECOMMENDED.

I did it on my ps4 pro and it works just fine. I coated the outside of the apu with clear nail polish just in case there was any leakage. Look, I get that there's a chance you can mess it up, but if done correctly it can have a great effect at keeping the chip cool.

I put a graphite pad inside my PS4 pro as well. The only thing is; I affixed it to the APU using a pea sized amount of thermal paste. Doing so made sure it didn't move out of place during the reassembly process. It's been about 6 months or so now, and I haven't had any issues with the fan noise level or system performance. if you use a system with liquid metal you wont have no problem but if you leave it and dont use then is gonna dry
@Dirty_Bear223 жыл бұрын
It won’t be a problem.
