Here's What Soldiers Think of the U.S. Army's Brand New Handgun

After months of waiting, the Army’s brand new pistols are finally where they belong: in the hands of American soldiers.
On Nov. 28, the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, began fielding the M17 and M18 pistols picked up as the Army’s new Modular Handgun System at the beginning of 2017. And for the first time, the new handgun is being issued to team leaders first, according to Military.com, a policy that will extend to all Army units who will receive the new sidearm over the next 10 months.
“This weapon is going to go down to the team leader, which is not what we typically have in the 101st or across most light divisions,” 10st master gunner Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Flynn told Military.com. “We are putting this weapon into the hands of a lot of younger soldiers who have never fired it.”

After 20yrs Army I have multiple pistols and rifles and taught my son how to sight, shoot, and safety as well as general range "etiquette". My son made it to E5 (Army) last year. His problem is that as an Army mechanic and an NCO his unit seldom trains, almost never does organized PT, and has not been to the qualification range in over a year. New unit this year and received about 1/2 of his issue and was told that he would have to buy what he needed for the field. His soldiers told him it has been like that for a long time. I joined the Army in 83 and most of my senior NCOs were combat Vets. Most of our gear was Vietnam era as were our radios and trucks but we did some type of training every day. PT at 0430 and last formation was at 1800. Some days we would sign out our weapons and carry them around all day just to get used to handling them. It is not the fault of these Soldiers that they cannot handle a weapon properly. It is the fault of the senior leadership.

I was a USAF SP in the mid 70's. Our sidearm was a .38 cal. 6 shot Revolver. The ammo they gave us would rattle down the barrel. The military has come a long way. A funny story, I was guarding a camouflaged C-130, it was about three AM when a bus pulled up to my gate, very unusual for that early, so I decided to have a look inside. I walked up the steps and when I turned I saw the bus was completely full of Green Berets, with all their exotic weapons. To their credit, no one laughed at my .38 revolver.

I was in the Army in the late 60s and shot the Colt M1911A1 semi automatic with never a problem. Today I have a custom 5" M1911 clone, shooting .45 ACP +p FMJ. I have shot Glocks and S&W semi autos but still prefer the grip and feel of the classic 1911. The trigger action is smooth and solid, being superior to anything else I've shot. Being a single stack magazine with a slim frame, the 1911 not only fits well in your hand but it conceals well in a shoulder or IWB holster. I will admit that the Glocks I've shot are very reliable and surprisingly accurate for me, considering how much I hate their trigger feel. My dream gun would be a long-slide 1911 shooting .45 super.

When I went through OSUT in Ft. Benning in 1993, pistol marksmanship consisted of a two-hour class, and maybe 4 mags through a Beretta 92FS? Honestly, that was the bulk of the training. So the shooting mechanics were never real big. It doesn't surprise me to see this, to be honest.

I was running like hell for one of my squad leaders when a flare popped... and they were right there. I would like to say I charged, but actually I just slammed into the little guy sending him flying. I guess the other two were as surprised as I was and just stood there while I fired from a long range of two or three feet. I saw the first one trying to stand and, by today’s standard, murdered him. They were brave men. I wish I could bring them back to replace some of the assholes running around our cities today. Those few seconds will stay in my mind as long as I live.

Got an old (circa 1960) military issue Remington Rand 1911, .45 ACP. Built solid, very accurate, and runs like a Rolex. I'd jump over a whole bunch of them boxes of new Sigs to get to it. It eats my 230 grain LRN handloads like M&M's, and drops game in its tracks like a bad habit. For my tax dollars they could have never discontinued its issuance. I have many other handguns in my collection of firearms. Any gun that was good enough to protect our valiant warriors through two world wars, the snow and cold of Korea, and the jungles of Vietnam, is certainly worthy of my respectful carry. I first used Sig Handguns back in the 1980's with the original P226 which in my opinion was one of the finest pistols ever made. In 2017, I transitioned from Glock over to a P320c. That lasted one month. At the 175 round mark, I began having trigger reset failures which were not consistent but progressively got worse. I contacted Sig and the tech I spoke to tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with the pistol and that "I needed to shoot it more and the issue would cease". I told him I was an armorer and that the issue was clearly a problem in the FCU (Fire Control Unit). He stopped arguing with me and sent a RMA shipping tag by email. I got the pistol back within 8 days. The issue? The trigger bar inside the FCU was out of spec which caused the trigger timing to be off. This is a fatal flaw with the P320 FCU design which can rear it's head at any point during the life of the weapon and it can and will render the user defenseless. I have spoken to unit armorers in the US Army who said they have seen the same issue with the M17 and to an alarming degree as well as other issues and they also told me Sig has been very slow to give them support when trying to assess the issues. Looking at how the NJSP had major issues with their Sig P229's and how the FBI's FTU rejected the P320, I am convinced Sig has major QC issues right now. They batch test their guns now whereas in the old days they tested each gun at the J.P. Sauer factory in Germany. Now they build as many guns in a month as they did in a year back in the 80's in Germany. IMO, major difference in quality.

Having been on the qualification range with him I have some hesitation that he qualified expert. And an O6 wearing it? I will be kind and say it is baffling an O6 would wear it. I earned my EIB AS a 1LT and part of that was qualifying with my assigned weapon. I carried an M16 and since we had them in our company arms room I also carried a M1911A1. Btw.... They're still learning. If what the video said was correct, it was the first time any of them shot a pistol, since MPs and Officers usually use pistols; but, now, Team Leaders got issued first, a role that didn't get issued pistols before. Also, the Army uses a crawl-walk-run methodology for training. These new TLs are probably at the "crawl" phase with the pistols. Hopefully, in week 2 or 3, the pistol usage would be much, much better. Finally, this is training footage, not a demonstration. So, yeah, it's OK to look bad, especially when you're learning :)

Over 22 years of Army...they never had anybody to train me how to shoot a pistol...that I had to learn in civilian life and then helped to train Soldiers. For the most part, most of those in the Army will NEVER EVER use a pistol to win a battle, it's more of a decoration and it really doesn't matter what they issue. The soldier sweeping the line was unbelievable. There might be a misconception that soldiers are experts in shooting their weapons. From my experience, they are given a quick class, then told to qualify. There is no time to get familiar with the weapon and practice. Most civilians who have gone to the range a few time have more practice, and done at their own learning pace. These soldiers might have qualified in basic, then never touched a pistol for the next two years. What the soldier likes is immaterial. The soldier gets what is issued to them, regardless if it is great or a piece of crap. Modularity/ swapping parts, is not something that the military likes. They like uniformity. At least they had good holsters. We had to use some p.o.s. leather holsters, that were literally held together with tape. Give me a thumbs up if you had to use one of those. That was a long time ago, though, so maybe things have changed. I was a tanker. We had to always have to carry around 9m. We hated them, because we always had to maintain hold of them, clean them, but never shot them.

I made my purchase because of it’s modularity with grips and the ability to change calibers. I do wish that ability included the 45 ACP but the difference in shell size met with ejection issues which cannot be solved in the smaller frame. At least so I understand. It is my best shooting 9mm.

I received my officers commission via ROTC in 1983. During ROTC in Fort Knox I got exactly 5 rounds to familiarize us with the pistol. The attitude is by the time we have to draw our pistols, everytbing is down. No M16, no M60s, no MA Deuce. Nuttin. Just make some noise to keep their heads down and run. But I first learned to love the 1911. My first personal pistol was a cheap POS, a used AMT Hardballer jammamatic. Then I later was able to afford better 1911s and now 40 years later I still love the 1911. I could now afford 2 Les Baers and 1 Ed Brown Special Forces 1911 and learned much on gun handling. Seeing the way these 101st Airborne shoot, I am concerned about their pistol proficiency. However, the old attitude still applies. By the time they have to draw it, everything is down. Cap off a few rounds and run.

I was part of the first cycle of MCSF Marines that got the M-9. I'm proud of my 2 rounds center mass and one to the forehead in a little over 2 seconds from the holster. Yeah, that will give you an idea how old I am. Why the hell don't they train from the holster?? These boys need to learn how to double tap and fast!! GEEZ!! NOT IMPRESSED with their clear lack of confidence while handling that weapon. And why the hell doesn't the Marines get new equipment first. I was sick of all of their hand me down crap. There is a reason why one of our mottos was improvise, adapt and overcome.

Safest place my corporal told me to stand. was directly in front of it. It was designed to Spray lead in an area. .We were good at 300. 600, and 900yds. everywhere in between was pot luck. We used to go backwards at times to get right distance to hit targets.

As someone who took basic training as a draftee with the 101 First Airborne Infantry (Baker Company) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in January, 1955, and fired expert (one of three) on the Garand M-1 during my rotation, I can say that this film clip is a complete piece of crap. Those guys are pulling the trigger before they get a good sight picture and wasting ammo. What has happened to my old brown shoe Army? Sign of the times.

your training was incomplete. this is a sidearm, intended for close combat. you're firing at human-sized objects within mere meters, not range targets 200 meters or more away. the difference, for example, between a sniper and a wild west shootout. that's why pistol training emphasizes time of discharge, not accuracy at range.

@@Vadanovltch well changing from one 9mm to another 9mm wont change anything on how affective they are at stopping a threat. The reason for the change over is that many of the M92’s are very worn out and have been rebuilt several times over after hundreds of thousands of rounds and changing hands with soldiers repeatedly for the last 30yrs. Just like your car once it has been used so much parts wear out and it eventually will need to be replaced. Plus a striker fire design is far more simple and reliable

@@Vadanovltch I personally have never been a fan of the Beretta M9, but dude both pistols fire the same freaken 9mm round. Yes the 9mm FMJ round just pencils through bad guys, thus a poor stopper. Thats why the 45 ACP shines even in FMJ ball ammo....just delivers more energy with that big, heavy slug far better than any 9mm FMJ rounds.
