Stee True that he started his career off of KZbin, and Quincy did attribute to his rise to stardom, but he’s so much more than a social media influencer. He’s undoubtedly a prodigy of our time (which is why Quincy took notice to begin with), so labelling Jacob as anything less, or other than a talented musician just to appeal to the viewers would discredit what truly makes Jacob ... Jacob. (Not saying that that was their intention because they DID explain who he was as a musician in the description :)

Stee kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4iroZejea2lpJo You were saying? You should stop with your unsupported arguments. I would like for you to name one notable musicians who can’t stand him, and I can name a multitude of notable musicians who give him the credit that we are speaking of. Guys, it is time to realize that there are just trolls who want to make people feel bad. They look for things people are passionate about, and they seek to do nothing but cause negativity in people, because they know that may be the best way they can get attention. I think it is ok to engage them, but don’t let them take away the beauty that people like Jacob Collier share with the world.

Stee if you genuinely think the musicality is pointless then you probably aren’t the audience for this music; that argument is just as ridiculous as people who say rapping is just speaking with a passion and not music. personally i enjoy his lyricism as well; it’s rather straightforward and to the point without seeming like it’s cutting any needed detail, similar to jeremy zucker’s songwriting. there’s no point in gatekeeping, nor is there a reason to diminish his musical knowledge and skill just because he did youtube covers and you don’t personally like his original music
@micotoronto
@micotoronto 3 жыл бұрын
@Stee you have a right to your opinion, i'm not at all denying your points because they're valid to your listening habits; they just contradict my views on him strongly. but going out of your way to reply to every comment praising collier under this video as if you'll change someone's mind and stating it as if it's fact over and over really gives off the impression i stated in my first reply
@micotoronto
@micotoronto 3 жыл бұрын
@Stee your opinion is correct to you. to someone like me, your opinion doesn't hold up as well. that's why they're opinions and not facts, and why they should be presented as opinions and not facts. personally i enjoy collier's music (especially his most recent release, djesse 3) because of his openness to modern genre ideals and lyricism while implementing many tropes one would learn at a conservatory that modern day record labels ignore or reject because it doesn't fit into a standard pop formula. on paper it doesn't look great but when you (well, not you, but his audience) listen to it it just clicks. just as i have my opinion, you have yours, but running around saying someone is "spreading fakeness" when nearly every great artist will say art is subjective to the listener isn't sharing an opinion, it's just being disrespectful to the artform
@micotoronto
@micotoronto 3 жыл бұрын
Stee he’s already wowed enough people within the industry to showcase that even the greatest in the current landscape are wowed by his talent and compositions. the great have already deemed him great. even then, if somehow they were to disagree, collier doesn’t make just jazz; personally i don’t think straight jazz is even his strongsuit after seeing his fusion of jazz with pop and hip hop, primarily on his latest album. the issue with pop and hip hop and your argument is that the playing field is so wide that there’s no objective good or bad, so inherently with the fusion he’s making there is no objective good or bad. i’ve not once denied your opinion because it is your opinion; i’m simply saying that it’s a wrong mindset to be thinking that his music is inherently good or bad by nature, alongside going out of your way to convince people of that

@Stee I'm partial to Ocean Wide, Canyon Deep... It is all a bit subjective though isn't it? How do we measure these things? Apparently Quincy Jones thinks Jacob is more than a "KZbinr."... If Quincy Jones is backing you, you've launched. If you have multiple grammies, you've launched. He has been featured on multiple television shows including the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel ... What is your definition of launched? Jacob will never be like a Kanye or a Justin Bieber. He is a jazz musician. What jazz musicians are household names in 2020??!?! I would say he is enjoying a pretty reasonable amount of recognition and popularity considering his jazz origins. But that's the beauty of having opinions and being a human. I'm sure Jacob would probably totally respect your right to hate his music! Much love man ... I just totally disagree.

This was delightful anyway, but I’m kinda thrilled because Jacob and BTS are literally my favorite non-classical artists. Hands down. Might sound crazy, but it’s true. They’re different, for sure, but they both offer the kind of art that can keep you engaged forever. Once you go down the rabbit hole, you’ll never come back up. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve actually thought that I’d love to see a collab between them, or at least some of the members.

Claudia Gilbert I can see that! His velvety baritone voice and general introspective mystique could make for something really moving. And the whole rap line-their BARS and expressiveness. Suga/August D spent quarantine studying harmony and practicing guitar six hours per day, and I loved his production in Daechwita. I bet he would love learning from Jacob, and I bet Jacob would love the world of combining traditional Korean instruments with rap beats to create sick tracks that can make your blood run cold. Also, Jacob puts more care and thought into his videos than most Westerners... BTS are rhetoric kings and it would be epic, especially if they could come together to make it something that Hobi and Jimin could express with their dancing in a video. Plus, Jacob is also an empathetic and kind human whose art reflects that kind of depth. And they’re not afraid to be vulnerable. This is clearly an elaborate dream I’ve had, haha... but I truly think that it would create living, breathing art of an epic proportion that we need in the world right now. Their strengths complement each other so well and uniquely. And it would be a beautiful way to tear down walls, both symbolically and in a concrete way.

As much music as he seems to know then he should know that Kendrick Lamar did not introduce Jazz to Hip Hop. Absolutely not. Now Kendrick has done a phenomenal job with his version of the fusion but he should know that the Jazz and Hip Hop fusion goes back from the 80's to early 90's. Just check out the collective Digable Planets. They were universally known for their fusion of Jazz and Hip Hop. Also A Tribe Called Quest did a wonderful job with this sub genre also. A big portion of early 90's Hip Hop was Jazz infused. It was pretty much the wave in Hip Hop during that era.

Stee just saying that he is just a "youtube star" undermines the fact that he is a pretty remarkable musician, with or without youtube.

Stee a lot of people genuinely like Jacob collier's music. If that wasnt the case then how was he able to become a "youtube star" from the beginning ?

It's been 8 years since he was a KZbin sensation. After you've been managed by Quincy Jones, nabbed 5 Grammys, and performed at Royal Albert Hall, I think it's pretty safe to say that train has LONG left the station- this young man is currently heralded by the pantheon of modern composers as one of their tribe.

Imagine the capital ($$) invested into Vice reporting hard hitting under reported stories for it to devolve into this vacuous “story”. It’s straight up clickbait or glomming on to Internet personality in the hopes of luring a younger demo.

Quote might be out of context, but it hasn’t been done in the mainstream in quite some time. The truth is, at it core, hip hop *is* jazz.

Awww what an angel, he's a lovely guy :) I love his perspective on the world (and his music too, obviously). It's a shame all these comments are so negative... Giving artists a new platform is another form a journalism, honestly. He's making a very big impact musically, so you could call it news I suppose lol... I don't see why everyone is so angry?
