I have an Opel (Vauxhall) Astra. I can't say it's a better car than a VW, but not far off. I buy used cars and Opels depriciate harder than VW's. Opel's aren't bad, but the perception of it has stuck. People's PERCEPTION of quality outranks actual quality. So If I buy a car new I would buy a VW (if I plan to sell it later). But used I would go for Opel.

3 years ago I treated myself to a 2010 Rolls Royce Ghost. It set me back £85,000 I had immeasurable pleasure in it, and once I had done all those things I wanted to (son to school prom, daughter to party, visit a few stately homes, a visit to Caffeine & Machine, plus daily it to work) I sold it. Hello James; I've owned a fair few Rolls Royce and Bentley cars in my 60+ years of driving, and nothing comes close. I no longer have RR/Bentley money, so I moved to Lexus, and it has to be said; the LS cars come close for ride, performance 30snd reliability. The LS600h Royal Lounge cars are simply amazing...and I can afford those too. For you? I think a Phantom could be the perfect choice. These cars speak volumes about their owners; the exude a presence which is unequalled by anything else. In a Rolls, you are instantly SOMEBODY!

When he was still alive Alex Moulton (suspension guru and bicycle innovator) thought the same. He'd had Rolls and Bentleys from the 60's but ended up with a LS400 saying it was a better riding car than any of them! (He liked big Citroens too)

I’m normally all in for the man maths, but… this really is a stretch. The used Taycan could lose 100% of its value from £50k and still be cheaper over 3 yrs and 30,000 miles than a Ghost at £80k - coming from someone who’s run F01 and G12 7 series for >100k miles. @somewhat-similar in the scenario of a Rolls doing that kind of mileage, then I see where you are coming from. But they are two very different cars that would be used differently (which shines a light on the comparison made by the content maker). A Taycan would get used and probably would do 10k miles a year. I can't see Roller doing that kind of mileage each year, unless you let your Chauffeur use it on his/her weeks off and he/she used it for trips to Scotland.

The RR Ghost represents superb valve for money as a second hand luxury barge due to them being launched over 14 years ago. I think they came out on a 59 plate. Not that expensive to service either. And, people will always let you out of a side road in a RR not so much if you are in a Taycan milkfloat! They are beautiful to drive, it's an event ever time, a real mile muncher in almost silence, due mainly to the glorious BMW V12 and a double bulkhead. My experience is that people love seeing them as they are still quite rare on UK roads. It's lovely to see some people waiving and putting their thumbs up at you. Comments like, "that is a beautiful car mate" or "Crikey! it's Alan Sugar"! Due to the power and torque and being rear wheel drive they eat rear tyres if you are not careful, can be tricky if mildly moist on the road! New Ghost Mk2 facelift is 4WD I think now, much needed. For what they are, they hold their money well in my humble opinion. A true future classic. If you want to be chauffeured, buy a Phantom, if you want to drive yourself, buy a Ghost. Good Video...

These can be bought for under £60k, much cheaper than any of the new German SUVs, especially without options. There aren't many Royces on sale for the simple reason, they deliberately don't built many to retain exclusivity, while the peasants consider the German options. Many of the things I dislike about this car are features found on a Ford Focus ! I would prefer a manual handbrake , headlights that do not turn with the steering and dip (eventually ) when you meet another vehicle, usually after they flash you . Manufacturers would rather fit unnecessary crap that is very expensive to fix , on their vehicles . I would rather they spent more on known reliability issues . Should you get one ? 1, You would need to plan your journey . 2, Parking may be a problem . 3, Maintenance cost high . 4, Would it continue to depreciate ? Bottom line ..... If you are going to do a long distance in a Porsche Taycan you should sign up for something like the Ionity Passport Tariff (currently 43p/kWh) and see you back here 20,000 miles later. Assuming a pessimistic 3mi/kWh and 50% charging is at Ionity - which is a lot more than most EV owners would do - it would be less than £1700 to do 20k vs a generous £7800(?) in petrol for the Roller (I would guess that would be closer to £10k). @@bobbydwheelhouse I was addressing Jays moronic comment about running costs around 16:10. Live in fantasy land if you want but the lovely Rolls will empty your wallet faster than you can imagine, A Taycan, also bought used, won't. I don't think it's a great comparison though as Porsche have pushed out thousands of them to buyers who don't want them but can't get the Porsche they want if they don't stump up for one. Given many have lots of money they don't particularly care that much about losing out when they sell them either - hence the glut of the things and the drop in residuals. I'd rather compare a leggy Ghost with a Mercedes EQS - waft around in luxury after spending £60k and see which costs the least over 20,000 miles......(it'll be the Rolls wallet crusher)

@@FFVoyager I think it’s 85k vs 85k, you’d be surprised how a bought right Rolls with strong main / inde history can run, and to a reasonable price point too. I’ve driven most Porsche products, I enjoy some not all. 992 Turbo S is spectacular. But an EV Porsche new vs this can’t get anywhere near it .

The first time I drove a Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, which is no where near as powerful as the Ghost, right after taking the car I floored in a straight line and I was really gladly surprised by the amount of power and facility to pick up speed of such a huge car.cQuite simply: it delivered power, and so it felt. With extreme softness and delicacy, but power. There was power everywhere, anytime. For reference, it was the very same car used in the official photo shooting in Paris, and this I tell was also in Paris. Floored it in front of the American Embassy, in no time I was at the British Embassy and reaching the corner to drive in front of the Elysée, where a very polite Gendarme stopped the incoming traffic to let me go through.

My recollection was that VW dropped the ball, not BMW: VW didn't appreciate that the rights to the Rolls Royce name etc was not owned by Rolls Royce, but by Vickers, IIRC - in buying RR, VW thought they were getting the rights to badge cars as both RR & Bentley, but they weren't. BMW did the separate deal with Vickers, & built the factory fresh, rather than having to spend a fortune upgrading the Crewe plant. Great review, great car.

Comparing gas cars to electric ones in different segments is like comparing apples and oranges. Even if these two cars were in the same segment gas v. electric it doesn’t make sense. Gas and electric cars are two entirely separate different inventions, and we need to look at them that way if we are to more easily adopt electromobility. The days of gas and go are gone with electrics, at least for a while. Regen braking is a different style of driving. Respectfully, I dont think this comparison makes any sense. The only things in common these two cars have is that they are expensive and can go fast. But i did enjoy the review. You gave information about Ghost I didn’t know, and gave us a sense of what it’s like to drive one. ❤

With the onset of technical obsolescence with EVs being a thing for a while (being outdated quicker than mechanical excellence) if it was my money, 70k on a stunning Rolls is where the smart money should be going. And in regards to the Porsche Taycan, even dealers aren't wanting used ones back as a trade in. So that's saying a lot to the market too, a Rolls Royce will have a market way after all the tech stuff is in landfill. Great video Jay, you should treat yourself to a Ghost.

Geoff, it would be interesting to analyse the split of EV vs non-EV cars sold by Ford, Stellantis etc given the government mandate that sales must have a minimum of 22% EV cars per manufacturer. If not achieved manufacturers need to pay a £15,000 penalty per non-EV car sold, based on that 22% EV/ 78% fuel split.
