Gave up drinking after my wife looked at me one night when I was in the bottom of a bottle and she told me that she didn’t see “me” anymore that I was a shell of the man she married and I wasn’t the father my kids needed. After that I realized I was in a low point and I sat the bottle down and haven’t picked it up in a year and a half. Sometimes a person needs to see how low they truly are before they admit their problem and get help.

proud of you, keep it up. i wish my father would quit. i remember begging him at 8, so mad that he seemed to not care at us that one night around that age, as he wobbled up the stairs, i thought of just pushing him down to get him out of our lives. kids are way more effected/aware than adults give them credit for. i’m 21 now, he’s still an alcoholic and the damage he has done to all of us is monumental. all this to say, you’re incredibly strong for putting the bottle down, and more importantly, putting your family first. you have no idea how much it means to them. congratulations on ur sobriety, stick to it! ❤

The struggle is real. I'm the ex-husband of an alcoholic/addict. 23 years together. Her last relapse was the worst I've ever seen. I've had emergency custody of our 2 kids since March. She still fights, lashes out, plays a victim and minimizes her actions. Her parents enable her behavior. Our teenage daughter doesn't want to see her. Our son can see her as long as it's supervised. I really wish she would stop hurting the family and get some real help. I'm going bankrupt with attorneys. Felt good letting that out. Happy to see so many comments from people who have "been there" living a sober life. Gives me hope.

Here's another example: In 1977, a beautiful young 20 yr old woman was killed by a drunk driver in Corpus Christi, TX, one day after receiving her Associate's Degree in Computer Science and accepting a full scholarship for her baccalaureate degree. Forty-six years later, there is no "getting over" or 'closure"--that's a myth. The drunk driver went on to live a happy life, but our family is still serving a life sentence of grief and loss.

What a beautiful, heart breaking comment. I am 2 1/2 years sober from alcohol (no probs with anything else, thank God). It took an NDE to get the help I so desperately needed. I had to do it for myself, for my own life. Nice side effect to that was and is that my family no longer avoids me, and they trust and respect me now. I am grateful for my sober life every single day. I hold that very dear and close to my chest. It saddens me greatly every time ANYONE dies from this. I'm not your mom, but I would hug you anyway.

No shame in having this disease. I also struggled with this horrible addiction. I have been sober and clean for almost 12 years. It is a disease not a character flaw. Sadly, shame goes with this sickness. I had people tell me if I was a real man all I had to do was just stop drinking. I was to,d that I had weak willpower and needed to just toughen up and quit. I had a Doctor explain to me that willpower has nothing to do with it. He gave me this example which has stuck with me. He said “tell those who say just quit to go purchase a bottle of Milk of Magnesium and drink the whole bottle. Then tell them to use willpower to not shit their pants. If they can do that then I can buy their willpower theory. You have much to be proud of for being able to quit and break the cycle. Let go of the “shame “ idea ! You have a disease and holding on to that thought of shame instead increases you chances of relapse. Be proud of where you are at No where you have been.

@@favnumber10999 Sober 36 years. I'm sorry but you're mistaken about AA-- guilt and shame have nothing to do with it, exactly the opposite. What we do is make a clear eyed appraisal of the damage we've done to ourselves and others by our drinking and make a sincere effort to set those things right. In that way we begin to heal the guilt and shame that haunted us and which would inevitably send us back to the bottle if left unaddressed. Sober life in AA is all about joy and gratitude and opportunities to be useful members of society, not brooding on our failings. We take stock early on so we can let go of the negative thoughts and behaviors that drove us and embrace life.

My father died from heart failure from drinking. Doctors told him he had to quit drinking cause his heart was failing and he told them he couldn’t stop. He would go to work and come home and immediately start drinking until 1 or 2 in the morning. He eventually lost consciousness and went without breathing for too long and ended up brain dead and we had to make the decision to remove all life support and let him go. This is why I will never drink. He never got to meet my son and I will not do that to my son when he is older.

I'm sorry about that man. Just to let you know, there are many sons and daughters of alcoholics and drug addicts that are in your shoes. Children of alcoholic and drug-addicted parents usually hate the stuff that killed their parents and made their childhood more difficult. You know first hand what alcohol does. I know firsthand what drugs do as well. However, It's our own sons and daughters we need to worry about. They also carry the gene of addiction, and they need to see firsthand what that stuff does. Alcoholism and drug addiction often skips a generation due to the sober parent shielding their kids from the evils and results of addiction. Then the kids get curious and may start an addiction since they are prone to the addiction itself. My cousin's dad died from a fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis due to drinking. He doesn't drink, and he always preached to his kids about how alcohol and drugs destroy lives. But kids usually dont take the message seriously. One day, he did over-hear his 14-year old kid talking about going to a party with alcohol. So they both (with his other son, who is 11 years old) went to skid row in LA to talk with the addicts there. They were actually very encouraging and candid when speaking to them- most were people who had sound mind and body before they tried drugs, and their rampant drug use brought forth drig-induced psychosis and other mental illness. that trip proved effective because it scared the crap outta those kids.

The cops in this video dealing with Josh are friggin' amazing. After everything he put them through at the little convenience store, especially when he rammed their vehicles with his car, they treated him with such total respect after they had him handcuffed. Asking if he was injured, being careful of his bad shoulder, and just being insanely nice to him in general.

I honestly think it's overboard. How can any , potentially dangerous, criminal take a cop or a cop's threats serious when they act so docile (asking him to exit the car at least 10 times before they take the next step). That's not how you deal with kids and it should not be how you deal with criminals. The old saying, you give an inch they take a mile comes to mind.

As someone who grew up with an addict for a mother, i can say without a doubt that alcohol was by far the worst and most destructive. She had always smoked weed, shot up cocaine, took pills, etc. but she never was much of a drinker until I was in my 20s. She had went to rehab and stopped using cocaine but then just switched her addiction to alcohol and became an alcoholic. She deteriorated so fast. The alcohol was WAY worse than the cocaine or pills. She had a major stroke a little over a year ago and now she’s in a nursing home. She’ll never recover. It’s really sad. The crazy thing is that after a year of being in the nursing home and not having access to alcohol, cigarettes, weed, etc., she looks better than I’ve seen her in many many years. She has color to her face and her eyes are bright….you can tell she’s had a stroke bc she’s completely paralyzed on one side and her mouth droops on that side but she still looks more healthy than I’ve seen her in a long time, maybe ever.

The _amount_ of people in this comment section that have kicked alcohol's ass is inspiring and makes me want to cry tears of joy! You are ALL worth being sober, being present in your very own lives~ I know life is hard and painful at times, but you can do this....and you're _worth it._ You matter. You are loved. You are worthy of so much. My mom grew up in an alcoholic home. Her parents were violent. My grandfather would drive her and her siblings around town while he was drunk, accidents happened, people on bikes were hit, grandpa blacked out many times, one time he was in jail and due to it being a small bayou town in Louisiana, my pawpaw was friends with the jailers, they gave him a cigarette in his cell and he almost *BURNED THE WHOLE JAIL DOWN!* I love my grandpa/Pawpaw....but he must have been in so much pain, and the ripple affects of the alcohol abuse have carried far and wide. Especially to us kids and our kids. 😢 I'm working through my own anger at my mom and dad for things that happened in my childhood and remembering what she lived through as a child of two alcoholics helps me empathize with her.... thanks to all of you!!❤

I will add my two cents on this video. First I too am proud and happy for all of you who are working hard to stay away from the substances that controlled your lives. It’s no simple accomplishment. You have to have help and you have to admit and understand that you yourself have the problem and want to do yourself a favor and work to free yourselves from the horrible life of addiction. It didn’t surprise me that Josh didn’t make it. In the first week of April of this year (2022) my twin brother didn’t make it. We tried for so long to help him and talk to him. He had just gotten out of prison and I saw him for two weeks in November of last year. 5 months later and he was gone. Accidental overdose of methamphetamine. It was found in the autopsy he did not have Fentanyl in his system. They found him partially decomposing with two freshly used pipes with residue. It was sad end to a troubled life. Do not let this happen to you. Keep working and stay clean and sober. I am most sincerely proud of all of you and the many others out there who fighting the battle every day. RIP Josh, and my twin brother.

My mom was a reason I never started drinking after she passed. I saw how much it affected her and my family growing up. I was only in highschool when it really started becoming an issue. I'd walk in on her passed out in her bed and the whole room smelled awful bc of how much she drank. Almost every morning when I'd get ready for school I'd hear her puke in the bathroom because of how much she used to drink. At times she'd get really sick and be in bed because she tried to quit cold turkey. I'd come home from school to see her sitting in her car drinking big cans of beer and sometimes she'd even be passed out. I remember having to help carry her inside and put her to bed because she was so wasted. She was angry and belligerent when she'd drink. I remember all the nasty things she used to tell me but I knew she didn't really mean it. She rarely hit me when she was drunk but it was more verbal than physical. I still remember her rushing into my room screaming at me over something I did in school. I skipped classes because of what I was dealing with at home. I was not in the right state of mind every morning before school. All I did was worry about her. All I did was think about her. She used to go off in the middle of the night drunk and I would stay up hoping she'd come home safe. I cried when I heard sirens passing by because I used to worry she got into a wreck or got pulled over and taken to jail. This wasn't how I wanted her to die. I was only a kid and I still needed her in my life. Eventually, she did get help for her alcohol dependency. She was doing so well and she even got her own place to live. She wanted to go back to school and get a realtor license. She was going to get remarried and I was going to have an amazing stepdad. He loved both of us very much. Until I got the call in December of 2019. My brother told us she was in the ICU for a suicide attempt. I didn't want to believe what I heard. I didn't want to believe my own mom could've done something like this. She struggled with mental illness most of her life but I didn't think she'd go this far. When my brother found her, she had relapsed into alcohol again and that's what fueled her to do what she did. I'll never forget seeing her laid up on the hospital bed with all these tubes and wires on her. I'll never forget the last time I held her hand. I'll never forget her smile and her laugh. She finally passed away a few days later and it was one of the hardest days of my life. I'll never drink because of what it did to my mom. And I made a promise to keep living my life even if it hurts. Because I want to do better. I want to be better than my mental illness diagnosis. I had every intention of taking my life after she passed. I counted the days and wanted to go out on Christmas. But I never did. I kept fighting. Alcohol ruined my family. And I don't want it to ruin me.

My best is advice don’t ever drink not even one time. Because even if it feels good and you have a fun time that one time you have no idea how you are playing a dangerous game that can lead you so far down that you’ll think I wish I would have never ever ever taken one sip of alcohol. Life isn’t like The Hangover movie. When bad crap goes down while you’re drunk there are actual legal consequences that can destroy your life forever even if from the outside it wasn’t like you got in an accident and the other person didn’t make it. It can just be getting one DUI or anything related to drinking that you did that wasn’t the real you and you’ll realize something else was pulling your strings while you blacked the whole think out and you end up paying for something you don’t even have any memory of doing and it can be overwhelming and change you inside like being a shell of a person. Not everyone who gets sober ends up having a great life. That’s just a lie. It is more like you’re just trying to avoid ever getting in trouble again and so you have to shut yourself out from the world because you don’t want to be tempted and you don’t want give in and wind up back where you started or worse and so for me it left me with trauma and severe ptsd. Red and blue blinking lights absolutely scare the shit out of me. Set off panic attacks. Like my dogs light up toy ball. Looks like police lights going off and I have a physical response I cannot control which it means of triggering this fear inside and impending doom feeling. Jail is worse than a mental ward. Or maybe not. They’re more like one and the same. And when you’re sober surrounded by crazy people who are violent and intimidating it is a nightmare you cannot wake up from and every minute feels like an eternity. Don’t ever do drugs or drink and you will never end up ever experiencing real jail, not the fake stuff in movies. Not every jail is the same, of course, but if you get a bad one holy crap you’ll wonder how the hell any of it is legal to let the shit happen in the there the way it does. It like being flung into the Gladiators and you’re trapped and you want to dial 911 and have the police come rescue you but the plot twist is you’re surrounded by police and they won’t even look at you and if they do it is like you’re not human anymore. They don’t care if you’re genuinely scared. The sick part is they want you to be so you won’t come back. I get it. But it can be scarr you in ways that you never thought was possible. It has been 8yrs and I’m still not over the traumatic experience. You don’t want to be caged. Stay away from alcohol at all costs.

It’s really not so hard. I say it with love, not as an ass. Look at yourself on the mirror and think about your addiction and what it’s done to you or will do or what you hate about it. Decide to quit. It’s that easy. The process is hard, but not as hard as you tell yourself it is. Half measure rarely work. “I’m weak, I’ll get to it later, maybe it’s not so bad”- all excuses. You are strong enough to leave it behind, you just choose not too. I did for a long time too and after I finally decided I’d give it a real try I kicked my self for not doing it sooner. Do it now.

I am a recovering alcoholic for 30 years it controlled me. I made the mistake of getting behind the wheel and into an accident that involved 2 other vehicles. I don’t remember anything about the night but thank God it was only a fender bender and nobody was hurt. The absolute fear knowing I could have easily killed someone that night has enabled me to remain sober ever since. That was 2 years ago and as terrible as it was it ultimately saved my life.

You're very lucky. I'm a younger widow, and my friend from my widow group lost her entire family, her husband and 2 young children, ages 2 & 4, to a drunk driver. I'm shocked at how many widowed families are the result of those drinking and drugging behind the wheel (not the cause of my husband's death). It destroys families forever. The families never recover. Problem drinking hurts the one addicted, but getting behind the wheel inebriated is outright attempted murder, and sometimes unfortunately, murder.

My mom passed away 2 years ago from alcoholism. I watched her deteriorate for years because of alcohol. That was her ONLY vice and she passed at 66 with severe dementia. I quit drinking after that and have been sober for 2 years now when I was a bad alcoholic myself. Never hurt anyone but myself with getting arrested all the time. There was a time where I thought I was never going to get sober, that this is just how life is going to be until I die. Something happened inside of me when my mom passed. I’m grateful now for being sober for so long. Praise be to God. If I can do it, anyone can do it, seriously.

Really heartbreaking to find out that he took his life shortly after this incident. He obviously had problems and you could tell he felt defeated and over it. Regardless of all of the chaos he caused in his own life, he was a father with three children - this will have a lifelong effect on them, no doubt. My father was an alcoholic and even at 40, I think about him and his struggles very often, it breaks my heart and it also pisses me off. He was found in his driveway dead when I was 20. He had a high level of alcohol in his system per usual, so they were unable to determine whether it was alcohol poisoning or the injury he sustained to his head that killed him. He was a very hurt man for many reasons and even though it had a massive negative effect on my life, I still feel terribly for the pain that he experienced before and after his alcoholism. Similarly, with this guy, it’s just hard for me to see someone hurting and so far gone that they just completely give up, taking others down with them. RIP, Josh.

My ex-husband is an alcoholic. I divorced him because his drinking & behavior was out of control. Our kids deserved a home with a functioning parent, and I got custody. He left the state and now, 23 yrs later also has permanent numbness in his legs. He married another alcoholic who just had a stroke at 70 yrs old. Today, I'm relieved that I divorced him because he was a poor role model for our children. Kids need two functioning, engaged adults in the home. It has been very painful for them to discover he loves his alcohol more than he loves them. If you have children and drink, get help. Alcoholics Anonymous' 12 Step Program works. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for your children. Don't leave them with a legacy of neglect due to alcoholism.

Hearing at the end of the video that this guy died made me think of all of the friends and acquaintances I’ve known over the years who have had their lives also cut short by our disease. Sometimes I mourn the “fun” person I thought I was when I drank, I was free (I have severe anxiety) I could let my hair down so to speak and have fun without worry of being judged, I wasn’t as up tight and stressed as I am now… but I STILL am so glad I stopped drinking. I was never addicted to it but I absolutely drank heavily when I was younger and after stopping it really shows all the ways you used to be reckless when seeing it from an outside perspective. I’m lucky to be alive after some of what I did while drinking (I can honestly say I have NEVER drank and drove though, never) my father was an alcoholic and I KNOW it had a big hand in his early demise. It ruined our family.

@@fermentedchannel That's just my point. I don't understand why you'd share the most intimate details of the worst period of your life to people you don't know, will never meet and who will drift out of your consciousness the second they push your Like button. I also don't get the fetish about how much time one has. What does it prove in a program that is supposed to be about taking your sobriety One Day At A Time? My apology if that sounds harsh. I realize that AA has helped a lot of people get sober, but it has failed a lot more as well. For all I know, maybe you're not even in AA at all. The point of my original comment was that if sharing your story online is your main source of support, hook up with some real people. I also realize that criticizing anything about recovery is like criticizing the Pope or General Motors. Why do I do it? To paraphrase you, because I can and I want to.

@@sisterdoublehappiness9714 I find it off-putting you're making something out of nothing with your negativity here. This video is titled "Here's Why Alcohol Ruins Lives". Naturally, you're going to read comments of people's sobriety and how alcohol was ruining their lives. You know absolutely nothing about me, besides that I'm sober. To immediately assume KZbin is my main source of support based off this one comment is ridiculous and frankly idiotic. Speaking about your sobriety shouldn't be something you keep private. It shouldn't be something that solely stays in a AA meeting. It's a real thing affecting real people. Speaking up about it can inspire others to see it's nothing to be ashamed about so they can get their shit together. I don't know you, but I can already tell you may be an insecure and perhaps lonely person that only feels validated by invalidating other people. Whether I'm right or wrong, I'm not going to explain this any further. Take care.

My father passed away last year, alone, and in a hospital bed because of his alcoholism. He had been drinking for so long that even if he stopped he would still die due to his body’s dependence on alcohol. Either way his fate was determined. Some people are too far gone and I hate that truth. Please, if you have someone in your life that you see heading towards that path then do everything in your power to be there for them and to help them stop. You can make a difference before it’s too late. Unfortunately for me, my dad’s drinking began long before I was born so I couldn’t do much to help him. Because of that I humbly ask you to help those who still have a chance in memory of those who don’t. Sometimes all a person needs is another person. Be kind to one another because for all we see on the surface we never truly know what struggles someone might be going through and facing them alone is worst than whatever those struggles are.
