There are not enough facilities to handle these mental health crises. The government is focusing on stupid shits for votes. They should have gone straight to the hospital with a 24-hr hold at the psyche ward. Could they have just done the test there (blood test) rather than the standard tests for DUI? I agree! People can say they have no empathy for addicts but I can only pray they don’t ever have to watch addiction in person. I was addicted to narcotics after being prescribed them! The addiction took me so fast, I was stuck for 3 years inside of it. Addiction doesn’t discriminate. Nobody around me ever suspected a thing because of the way I live. So so so sad for people like this man, who are so easily judged by people that have no idea who he was before addiction. 💔

Agreed. I imagine a situation where someone was driving themselves to the hospital because they had physically injured themselves and was gushing blood. The police stop them, say 'wow! that's terrible that you're bleeding like that! Let's just do a field sobriety test and then we'll let you go to the hospital'. Or if the person was going into diabetic shock and 'hey, yeah, you'll get treatment, but first you need to do these field sobriety tests... ' People would be ranting all over the comments on how horrible that was. But, because it's mental health rather than physical health, the stigma and biases step in, and the guy's pleas for help are ignored.

For-profit prisons provide the bare minimum, which also means the bare minimum in health care, and almost zero mental health care. County jails don't provide mental health services worth squat, as the county doesn't want to spend the money. From Matt's POV, it sounded like a lot of voiced instructions at once, lots of confusing voices, crappy weather, fight with his girlfriend, recent drug use, patient reported hx of meth psychosis.... just a HELLA lot goin' on... Add that all to a messed up mind, drugs still in his system, Very real fears, Very acute emotions... seems like things Could & Should have gone down better. But like I said, I'm not a Pro. He had his reasons, there were four ways to get to the hospital: 1) He asked someone to drive him 2) go by ambulance which can be really expensive 3) call a taxi/use public transit 4) drive himself. The US is so screwed up medically and judicially he couldn't get the help he wanted and these officers decided to administer sobriety tests even though he said REPEATEDLY he needed to go to the hospital. This is NOT how priorities work. The first would have been the best but even number three was better than calling an ambulance, but who knows, Lacrosse's taxis or buses were probably at home asleep by 2 am. He asked a friend or family member to drive him, that was turned down. What was he left to do? What would you choose to do when going through withdrawal and off of your meds that help you live a better quality of life? I would say put yourself into that situation and the many others in that country. He was literally facing the paradox, "You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't."

"Better mental health resources." Did you see the list of CRIMINAL CHARGES the guy was hit with ... not to mention the ridiculous $2500 cash bond release 8 days later that enabled him to commit multiple more crimes including domestic abuse? The "mental health" system wants nothing to do with violent CRIMINALS. As you'll have also noticed, if you watched the whole vid, he was indeed taken to a hospital and was medically cleared. That clearance would have included a "mental health" assessment by, at least, the attending ER physician. He may have also had a psych consult while there, or the ER physician consulted on the phone with on-call psych who would not wish to take a violent criminal, under arrest, for any attempt at further assessment or treatment while he is whacked out on booze and drugs. While the law/society continue to allow free-range psych patients there's little point in MORE "mental health resources" because no one can force 99% of these people into any sort of care/assessment/treatment they don't want. In fact, he was under treatment ... and CHOSE, as is his "right," to stop treatment.

As a schizophrenic, this one really hit home. Mine wasn’t drug induced, I’ve had it since childhood. But man when he was sobbing and saying “I don’t want to hurt anyone” and about the voices- I’ve been there- it sent me right back to the days before being properly medicated. I really feel for the guy, but I recognize, even with myself- if you’re seeing stuff, probably not best to get behind the wheel, with or without being under the influence. I remember that I would see things run across the road or pop up in front of my car and I’d regularly be slamming on my breaks to avoid something that wasn’t there. It just wasn’t safe, not for me, and not for anyone else on the road. So I made the decision to give up driving until I was stable and cleared by my psychiatrist. It sucks but when you’re in the throes of psychosis, you gotta make a choice. Really, he should’ve called someone to pick him up or an ambulance- even as expensive as they are. I’m 5 years into treatment and only in the last three months have I been on the road again. It’s just not worth the risk. Be safe and do the right thing.

When Mathew stated he was hearing voices telling him to hurt himself , mentioning psychosis he should have had an ambulance called immediately for his safety , not having the officers attempt field sobriety tests. He was already paranoid as he kept reiterating how scared he was and he didn't feel safe. More training needed on dealing with mentally ill people no matter what their crimes😢

The field sobriety testing is for records purposes. It’s to cover their asses to be able to have records that say they had reason to pull him over. By conducting the field sobriety tests, they can then determine from there to proceed with an arrest and then to get help. They have to jump through all these hoops to have the paperwork that covers their bases because of people that always judge their every move. They do it by the books so no one can turn and say “well they didn’t do X/Y/Z! They didn’t follow this/that protocol.” If they skipped over all of that and took him straight to a hospital despite clear signs of impairment and being under the influence while operating a vehicle, if and when a lawyer gets ahold of this and there is no record of any field sobriety tests being done, many charges could get thrown out without question … and I’m sorry, no matter how much one can empathize or sympathize with the guy, it doesn’t give him anymore of a right to be out on the roads driving in that manner more so than anyone else. They’re trained to do shit a certain way with their department. If you don’t work for their department, an outside civilian perspective isn’t going to help or make it any better. Things are done a certain way for a reason. They were very cordial with the guy and handled him the best they could given he admitted to being under the influence and being in possession of a weapon, all while trying to go against officers and brush against their weapon while pushing them off. There’s certain ways to handle things. Just because he’s under the influence and _says_ he needs to go to a hospital doesn’t mean they throw everything they trained for out the window. They ultimately took him once the situation was under control (top priority) and he was cleared. It’s very easy to judge their every move from an outside perspective with hindsight. What they did in the moment was handled fine given the circumstances. They could have easily been a lot rougher and been way more aggressive with the guy as soon as he kept reaching for his weapon despite constant commands to not do so … but they didn’t. They remained calm with him and gave him many extra chances - which is WAY more than most. I really don’t know what else some of you expect, them to get down and hug the guy, wrap a blanket around him, and coo him while they let him sit up front on the way to the hospital while telling him how they’ll let their protocols slide this time because showing empathy/sympathy comes first? lol Come on…

Agreed. I come to this channel to see morons fuck up big time and get what they deserve, not to see first responders fail to render aid to someone who is having an emergency. I'm sure they were following SOP for that department, so I don't blame the individual officers but if someone was driving themselves to the hospital with a stab wound or appendicitis would they have made him do fields before calling an ambulance? I don't think so and this situation should have been similar. Failure of policy.

@@ISAYWORDS1 I blame the officers on this one, I get SOP and all and I get training and repetition and all that but when dealing with so many different situations there is no ONE answer, they need to be able to make adjustments for situations, but then you get into lawsuits and all that for NOT following protocols, so like I said I usually do side with the blue because it’s a tough job, there’s just something about this one that seems clear to me was misread by the officer and they should have come up with something that may be unconventional while still following protocols since it was a slowly developing situation and not a wam bam instant moment, just my opinion, in hindsight considered of course.

Probably the first time I have sided with the person getting arrested on this channel. I am not defending his DUI, obviously that is wrong and he needs to get charged for it, but the police did absolutely nothing to de-escalate the situation or help him when he was literally begging to be taken to the hospital. I fully believe his aggressiveness at certain points was from him completely giving up and just wanting to die. It is not an anti-police sentiment to say the cops could have handled this way better, and it is disappointing seeing so many comments refusing to look at this with any degree of sympathy at all.
