I've had them on my 4runner for a year now and I love them. Nice ride and good response. Also they help eliminate the back tipping at take off and setup for better acceleration.

When the time came to replace the Bilstein 4600’s on my ‘09 Tacoma, I went with the 5100’s and did a 2.5 inch lift (approximately) on the front and the back, with an add-a-leaf to accomplish the rear lift (all from Toy-Tec Lifts). The whole project took about 3 hours and the results were absolutely brilliant. Since it was a modest lift, it didn’t even impact the alignment much at all. These shocks are amazing. It is almost as if they know what type of terrain you are on and handle beautifully whether one the highway, in snow and ice or pounding a rocky trail. The rear spring addition also made towing a lot more solid.

Testimony time here. I had Bilstein 5100's on my 2014 Chevy Silverado 4x4. LOVED them. I sold that truck and bought a new 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 (6.2L) with Ranchos. The rear Ranchos are pathetic...so much looseness and bounce. In fact, when you are on pavement and go over a speedbump, the rear end "jounce" actually causes the tire to loose traction. Ranchos might be alright off-road, but on pavement...they don't feel controlled or planted. Just ordered Bilstein 5100's rear shocks for my new truck...and will likely get front 5100's for the front struts before too long. Great video. Stiffness (as you demonstrated in this video) doesn't necessarily "mean" rough riding. In fact, pretty much the opposite in my experience. And I am old.

funny the way you described the OEM shocks, my Z71 OEM bilsteins had sort of the same feeling. When I had to replace them I went with 5100's and they are a lot firmer. Instead of a cadillac ride it rides like a truck I guess.

I’ll agree the 5100 is the only way to go. I just installed them on the rear of my 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, I have the fronts, but need to have them installed for me with the help of a friend that works at a Chevy dealer as a technician, that has everything he needs at his home garage. I noticed a huge difference in just the rears and I know once we get the fronts mounted at the 1.5” raised high the difference will be great! I also tow a travel trailer that weighs as much as 6,500 at the most, 5,800 normally. That I have towed since the rears were added and there is NO extra rebound after crossing nearby train tracks I’ve gone o er a dozen times! I can’t wait to see off road! My last Colorado was an Ext Cab Z71, with what Chevy calls off road suspension, but the only difference I feel is the stiffness, but I’ll have about 28% more compression travel in front with the 5100, than a stock truck! I can’t wait!

I just finished putting 5100s on my '21 4R ORP. I can confirm everything you said. The ride is definitely noticeably firmer, but not egregiously so. The handling is also noticeably tighter and brake dive, while not gone, is greatly minimized. On the brake dive, what I noticed is that, not only didn't it dive as much, you don't have that immediate, rapid dip in the nose. Instead, it's slower, more controlled. In the front, I went with the second notch (0.85" lift). For me, this makes the front wheel arch gap (visually) the same front and back, rather than the stock smaller gap in the front vs. back. Overall, I'd recommend them for an early mod, especially if you aren't planning to climb Mt. Everest with it. [edit] BTW... I did the job myself and it took me an afternoon to do it with all the jacking, removing skids, etc for the first time (Would be quicker the next time). I used the "no spring compressor" method and am a convert to it (I've changed struts on many of my other cars).

For one with you driving looking at the sky isn't good around here....two...most if the weight in the rear will cause the front wheels.to push like hell in the snow.....third....wouldn't be able to stop caus either be to late in the snow cause we would be watching the passenger jet going by instead of the vehicle that you would hit. I'm not being a jerk..cause we had a guy here that did that....2 wheel drive....couldnt see crap and piled it up....that stance is for trailer trucks....to the play area.....what did u put in the rear? I might have to upgrade on my 2019 colorado. I put the readylift 3.5 sst lift kit in which claims you don't need to do anything else to the truck. But I think I'd be better off replacing the stock shocks and struts.
@ShockSurplus

lifted shocks or coilovers are always superior to spacers. When using spacers alone and upgrading wheels and tires, now that unsprung mass of the new wheels and tires are wearing on the stock shocks, which wears them out faster, and obviously dampens worse.

One of the things that makes me regret going for the Limited than the TRD Offroad is the apparent ride difference. My Limited could not in any way be described as having a "cadillac from the 80s" ride, which is what I am looking for (I like plush ride over a skateboard ride). Also, I like the all-mode 4wd on the TRD as opposed to the AWD on the LImited. The only thing that made me so excited about the Limited was that I liked its exterior looks better.

I'm going to throw a question out to the masses. I have a 2016 4runner TRDPRO. It came with Bilstein coil over shocks on the front when i bought it new. At 39,000 miles, the passenger side coil spring was found to be broken in 2 places (I don't take the truck off road). The dealership covered the repair and new spring (Toyota Motor Company was only going to cover 30% of the cost). Then, at 89,000 miles, the driver side spring broke. I ended up putting monroe quick struts on the truck, which ride pretty nice. The only drawback is that the front ended sits a little lower than the rear (no biggy). My question is: if I eventually put the Bilstein shocks back on the truck, what would be suitable replacement springs? Thanks in advance.

@charlesabbott9605 2 жыл бұрын
Mike, I know you have raised your 4Runner multiple times using different settings. How was the ride in terms of balancing response (stiffness) and ride quality degradation when you raised the c clip to the higher settings? I am thinking the tallest setting will be too stiff, however, I also have 2" Bilstein coils for the rear so I'm wondering what it will look like with the factory coils on the front Bilstein's will look like set at the 2" slot (1.75" actual but I could be wrong) 3rd space on the shock. And I'm assuming I don't want to use an aftermarket coil with the 5100's. I don't mind some rake if that helps with your recommendation. I don't want a squishy Cadillac ride but then again I don't want a stiff Ferrari wagon-like ride either. The rake is ok if it stays around factory look but I'd rather the rear not be any taller than factory differences between the front and back (2"). I hope this wasn't too confusing. Sincerely, Charles

Hey Mike, i would like to have your opinion on rear shocks before please an order for a set of Bilsteins for my ‘19 4Runner. (3” lift front - 2” rear) OE Koito shocks we’re almost fully extended occasionally on speed bumps or potholes. I went ahead and install a pair of OME Super charger 60080 for longer travel on the rear suspension, the result was a really stiff ride, nothing comparable with a sporty ride. My 4Runner feels like a brick even with plenty of weight in the cargo area, Honestly don’t like the ride right now. I can hear how everything moves and all vibrations inside the vehicle (awful) what I’m looking for is a soft ride with a 2” longer travel, that’s all. Will Bilsteins 5100 be the right ones? Are Fox shocks soft like Koitos? What’s your experience with your 4R? I may be one of the few that like the original soft ride Lol. Thanks in advance!
@Ethan-um7cp
@Ethan-um7cp 2 жыл бұрын
The 5100's have stiffer valving than the OE shocks, but do offer greater travel. So they will solve some of your issues but won't ride as soft as the OE shocks over small bumps at lower speeds I've found that they smooth out the faster I drive, which is not always an option obviously. How well they work for you might also depend on what spring/spacer package you used to get your 2" rear lift. I like the rear 5100s but my usage, doesn't include alot of potholes/speedbumps. Which I can imagine wouldn't be great on my setup. I drive more highway and desert off road where speeds stay better in the sweet spot. I have wanted to try the ome rears, but I don't think they will pair well with my modified rear suspension situation.

Unless you have a heavy front steel bumper and/or a winch the 6112 is overkill and more than double the cost. The difference in ride without the mentioned extra weight is negligible. With the extra weight on rough terrain it is a different story for sure and makes sense.
@soldermecold7456
@soldermecold7456 2 жыл бұрын
@@wastedyears6653 Ur kidding me right? I've had both on my truck and its a noticeable difference. The spring is responsible for holding up the weight, and 6112 springs are for stock weight loads so what you say is a moot point. The 6112 shock provides significantly smoother operation than the 5100. Just like an engine, there is no replacement for displacement. You are moving more oil through a larger valve and you get less pressure and smoother operation. Even driving in the city it overall feels better, and if you plan to actually cycle the shock off-road its worth every penny. Its as good as it gets until you step up to a full coil over from King, Fox, or similar company.

The 5100s are much stiffer up front. They still ride great, and I love them. But you get significantly more road chatter and jarring from the 5100s. The 6112s are plush and soft in comparison. I have a 2013 Tacoma TRD Off Road with stock suspension. Since 5100's are stiffer does that mean if I install them that my truck bed won't sag/sink as much if I load it with stuff? I have stock height at the moment which is 2" higher in back than front. I'm thinking I'd like to just go 1" in front which will make the back just 1" higher than the front but I don't want the rear to have that sill looking sag if I put stuff in the bed. I"m not a big hauler and don't load the bed much and I don't use the truck for work or anything but just curious. With one inch higher in back can I still put some camping gear in the bed and not sag all the way to my destination?!!
@DrivenCompanion
@DrivenCompanion 3 жыл бұрын
5100s wont affect how your truck sits. If you're worried about sagging in the back I would only lift the front 1" more than the rear and you'll be good. ie. you could lift the front 1" and leave the rear at stock height, lift the front 2" and the rear 1", front 3" and rear 2", etc.
@napnap609
@napnap609 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenCompanion Thanks for the reply Mike, I guess I thought with 5100's you could weigh down the back more and not sag as much as you would if you had the stock suspension. The reason I thought this was because you showed in your video how soft your stock 4 Runner shocks were by simply pressing down on them and seeing how easily the gave in. Then you tried to press down on the 5100's and they didn't give at all. I thought that would translate to a firmer truck bed.

Several very high end shock manufacturers (Kings, Icons, Fox come to mind) don’t include rubber shock piston protectors because their shocks are rebuildable and boots tend to retain moisture accelerating corrosion issues and leaking around piston seals. For rear shocks they offer simple metal or plastic shields to protect piston rods from rocks but allowing water to dry. For front shocks no boots are used and the coil springs provide protection.

This is a Great video description with a lot of passion for developing the ultimate ride. The stock 4runner suspension works very well for drivers that like the soft plush ride. Some 4runner owners don't speed up and stop short quickly. Some 4runner owners like the soft suspension and learn to break the vehicle early and softly. Many 4runner drivers do not drive aggressively. Many 4r drivers brake early enough that the "nose dive" doesn't exist. Many 4runner owners do not want a stiff and bouncy pickup truck ride. Many 4runner owners enjoy the soft plush ride of the stock suspension. Do not assume that Bilstein 5100s are a HUGE improvement over stock 4Runner suspension. This video is for drivers who desire a more racy car. This is a very well made sincere and honest video.
