I have a 2022 dodge ram 3500 dually and put in the rancho rs9000xl. I do mostly towing and hauling and was wondering what would be the best setup for those shocks?

I haven’t tried the billsteins yet, but I was blown away by how my 2006 duramax performed on washboard dirt roads with the Rancho rs5000x, so when my jeep needed new shocks I bought those. I think the weight of my axles and the heavy duty springs provides enough stiffness. All I’m looking for is damping so they don’t bounce and so far it feels good.

The double and triple tubes also help with heat dissipation

That is certainly the intent of the design, but in function we find they end up cavitating or fading from heat a lot faster than a monotube. If heat dissipation is a concern, a monotube like the RS7MT or the Bilsteins are the way to go.

I replaced the OE ranchos with bilstein and feel like they're softer but way more progressive than the OE shocks. I find it interesting you're saying the opposite. I raced offroad for ~6 yrs with king 3" 5 tube bypass shocks. I drive a duramax though so less unsprung weight than the ram with a solid axle. I think they're equal all things considered. My rancho didn't ever leak and the bilstein have about 5k miles on them about half pulling a 10k trailer.

Bilstein uses a digressive piston, and not a high flow one at that, so we dont typically categorize that as progressive damping. They get really loose in the med/high shaft speeds. Duramax meaning chevy hd with torsion bars? We dont have a torsion bar vehicle on staff, lots of our reviews are on IFS and solid axle (ram, wranglers), so this is only our experience and not necessarily universal truth. I got over 100k miles on my rs9000xls and I can most definitely still feel the difference in the adjustments. But they have since started leaking, and the right front one has cracked at the lower bushing ring

RS 9000 XL on 07 Chev 2500 4x4 stock worst shocks ever owned on/off road rebound bucking constantly. Washboard roads seem decent, but any pot holes...it's on. Waste of money.

I Just ordered shocks from you guys. I found a $10 discount code on line too. Good price for the Bilstein 5100. Its hard to find the 2 post top end shocks for some reason (at least my mechanic and tire shop can't find them).I got the 24-218023 for a 6 inch lifted GMC Sierra 2500. I already have Bilsteins on the rear I got last year....Damn GM 3/4 ton trucks you gotta rebuild the front end every 100K seems like....anyway, thanks for the comparison vid..very informative

I have a 2007 Silverado 1500 with Monroe stock replacement shocks and am looking for a good shock for comfort and smooth ride for primarily daily use. Vehicle has 150,000 miles and is primarily a daily driver. Would like a softer ride with performance using a really good shock. Also, don't the springs need replacement on the front as well. Thanks

@@ShockSurplus 7” dropped differential Rough County lift with Bilstien 5100’s attached to lift spacers up front and Bilstien 5160’s on the rear. I’m running 35x13.50 R20 tires. Heavy Iron Bull bumper with a 12,000 lbs winch. I do desert gravel roads every day. The vehicle is a 2011 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4 with a gen 4 LC9 aluminum LS V8 in it. I also have a RiGd rear swing out tire carrier for the matching spare tire and 5 gallon Rotopack. I want rebuildable Coilovers up front ( perhaps some 8100 series Bilstiens). What do you recommend for this application??

Thanks for the great video. I have a 2015 F250 diesel with a Carli Starter 2.5" system with the add a pack. The shocks are too stiff on the street for my liking. Carli says I need to drop thousands more on full leaf springs and reservoir shocks. Would any of the options in this video provide me with a more plush street ride with acceptable dirt road performance? This truck will never mob through the desert at high speed.

I do not think either a Rancho or a Bilstein would be the right choice for you, but a set of Fox 2.0s should soften things up a bunch. If you are planning on doing any serious towing or hauling we do recommend going for the CD adjustable option though.

I had/have ranchos and first set lasted 30k miles, the adjuster broke on the softest setting after a year so I couldn't adjust them after that which made every day driving and especially long road trips super annoying and sometimes probably dangerous as I was bouncing all over. I only did about 1,300 miles of washboard roads in a total of 6 100ish mile trips and they were absolutely dead after 30k miles too. I got a second set for some weird reason. Won't be going back to these, that's for sure. 1st gen Tacoma, 1.75" lift nothing else modified

I thought long and hard on the Rancho RS 9000's for my lift, but ended going with the Bilstein's 5100. I really do think I made the right choice.

I have a Ram 2500 4x4 with the stock shocks and it rides rough. What would be a good daily driver shock for rough roads? I would like as smooth a ride as possible?

If you still like to use it like a truck then I would recommend a Bilstein 4600 otherwise if you want the smoothest ride possible, you are not doing a ton of towing and hauling, then you are probably best served in a Fox 2.0.

Looking to get some shocks for my 2018 f150. I want the smoothest ride possible with some longevity. what do you recommend? I was thinking about getting the RS7MT but I’ve heard bad things about the lifespan of them. Also when replacing the front should I just get the shocks and coil spring assembly? Or is that unnecessary? I’m on all stock suspension no level kit or lift. Want to keep it that way. Thank you in advance

Sure I would probably lean towards an Eibach set up if you want longevity and something that rides a little softer. You do not necessarily need a complete assembly as the springs last nearly forever on these trucks, but it would be a good idea to change out your top hats and such while you are down there. Eibach has both their Pro Truck Sport circlip adjustable struts which are similar to the 5100s or if you want a complete assembly they have their 2.0 coilovers as well.

Hi team… I have a Jeep liberty 2011 I saw your channel and is great! I lift my Jeep 1.5” and with original shock is too soft like moving around witch brand would you recommend for rear shock absorber if I like a firm ride… not a vehicle moving like without control… firm ride and soft! I put a set of Rancho's on a Dodge a few years ago. All I'd ever heard back when I had my previous jeep was how great Rancho's were. Well, 15K miles later I yanked them. At that point, it was like not having shocks on it at all. And the wear and tear on other suspension and drive line components had already started getting bad. Replaced them with Bilstein 4600s, and never had a problem again. The ride quality was better than it had ever been. When the Rancho's came off they were completely shot. Worse than the economy Monroe's that I had originally replaced. Bottom line; if you are building a trail-only rig; they are great. Daily driver or work truck? Stay away. Rancho's just are not made for longevity.

Definitely hear this a lot! Ranchos used to be the shocks to have 25-30 years ago, but the Bilsteins are pretty hard to beat. It is funny you mention Monroe though, as they are owned by the same company as Rancho.

@@ShockSurplus Yeah, I wasn't aware of Rancho being made by Monroe until a couple years after I threw the Ranchos on the Dodge. Had I known that before purchasing, I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole (just one more reason to avoid). I did 2 cars with "easy struts" at the same time a while back. One I used a Monroe OEM ride quality set, and on the other I used KYBs. The Monroe's didn't ride any better than the ones I took off. The KYB's on the other hand were excellent. Pulled the Monroes off after less than 1000 miles. The old "trusted names" from back when I first started wrenching as a kid have gone way downhill over the years. Don't even get me started on Moog lol.

Plus 1 for no noticeable difference adjusting my RS9000. Ran them on my stock Excursion (all street/hard pack dirt and towing use) after 8 years and 35k miles, they're done. Replaced my factory RS5000s with 5100s on my other truck, a stock F250 Super Duty and personally felt it was an improvement. The Excursion is going to get the 4600s.

I installed some RS5000X in my Jeep WJ as a budget off road alternative, as you said. I'm pretty happy with them. Compared with the Gabriel that I had previously, it was night and day. And the Gabriels were in good condition.

After reading some of the comments I’m regretting buying the rancho kit. It came with 9000xl adjustable in the front and RS5000x in the rear. I haven’t driven it much but it definitely isn’t smooth on the highway. I’m going to play with the adjustments and see how it goes

I have a stock avalanche and I do not do dirt or trails. I may eventually tow but no plans for it now. I want the smoothest ride possible but we have terrible roads around Ft. Hood. What would you recommend?

I would definitley give Eibach Pro Trucks a shot. The Bilsteins are a little firm if you do not have any immediate plans on towing and the Ranchos are usually completely under damped, particularly on rebound, and are somewhat prone to defects. The Eibachs use a very similar monotube design to a Bilstein 4600 or 5100, and are built to about the same lofty standard, while being tuned a touch softer to be a little more plush for the average person.

I have 1.75" rancho struts on my first gen Tacoma and i had to replace them after 4 years and less than 35k miles. Went to an offroad place that specializes in tacoma lifts and suspensions and they were surprised the ranchos lasted that long. They said they never have complaints or returns with Bilstein but see lots of issues or poor long term performance with ranchos. I do about 400 miles of offroading per year consistently and then any teups into the mountains for camping which is usuallay max of a few miles. Super disappointed in rancho struts from my experience. Also the adjustment part to dampen the response broke off after two years so i was stuck having to use the softest ride setting at all times. Not sure why they use plastic for that part

Unfortunately that seems to be more and more the case with the Ranchos. They actually make that knob easily replaceable because that does happen often. The Bilsteins will definitely last longer and perform better for your uses so they certainly steered you in the right direction.

Hey! I just purchased the Ranchos from your site for my JK wrangler. I currently have 5160s and I am trying to make the jeep friendlier to ride. It's really rough with the Bilsteins. My guess is the 5160s are even tougher than the 5100s. Has that been your experience? What should I expect with the ranchos compared to the 5160s? I am not installing them for a few months at least because I am coating the whole undercarriage before replacing the shocks. It sucks because I spent double the price of the 9000s for the 5160s.

What is the ride comparison between the Bilstein 4600's vs the Rancho RS5000X? I just purchased a set of Rancho's for my 03' F-150. Haven't installed them, but that's what the truck came with- assuming they are the original from the factory. I had a set of Rancho's on a 92' Ford Explorer many years ago, and they had kind of a sporty/bouncy ride on the highway, but really helped with the body roll and safety of the vehicle. I had a 94' Chevy full size that had Bilsteins on it, but they were old and worn- so I really have no comparison of a new set. Thoughts?

the rancho have a 32mm piston, the bilstein has a 46mm, so the rancho has a hard time damping rebound actions (suspension recovering after compression), which leads to some slop and heaving on heavier vehicles going up driveways or bumps. On the F150 this may not be too noticeable, but the Bilstein handle way way better overall, and 1 set of Bilstein will last 2 or 3 sets of Rancho shocks (if you're particular about how well the shocks are working) without issue. That bouncy ride isn't a feature, its a bug.

I have a Jeep Wrangler 2020 JLU Sahara. Towing 3000lbs with Hensley sway distribution hitch. Upsized 275 70 18 LT tires with no lift. No off road, just towing and mall crawling. What would be the best shock for this set up?

5100s would be a great choice! They will be much better under a load, handle the extra unsprung mass of the bigger tires great, and should even ride and handle noticeably better unloaded.

I have a '97 Taco rwd, 2.4L base model that needs new shocks, but I'd like something in a monotube design to replace the stock shocks, since I live in CA and, by default, pretty much all of our roads are bumpy and rough. Would the KYB Gas-A-Just be a good compromise between the recommended OEM replacement Excel-G's and the pricier Bilstein 4600's? I don't need anything super stiff (heck- it's a mini-truck), just want something a step up from stock/OEM. Thanks.

whats the best lower budget (sub 200) for a low speed ford super duty 4x4? Based on this video the 5100's seem like the worst except Other people tell they control the heavy leaf spring rebound unloading better.

We would not recommend running a set of shocks that costs less than $200 on a vehicle that weighs upwards of 3-4 tons, but there are plenty of great shocks for under $200 a piece that will be killer. If you are not hauling heavy loads and do not mind a little extra maintenance, nothing is as plush as a Fox 2.0 for the money. Otherwise if you want something maintenance free that runs on the softer side of things I would go for a Skyjacker M95

A lot of it comes down to whether it is a 1500, 2500, or 3500 and how you plan on using it, however you will probably be pretty smitten with a Bilstein 5100 almost regardless of how you use it. They are known to be a little firm though, so if you like a super soft ride you might want to consider Skyjackers M95 line of shocks.

What would you recommend for a 2003 Silverado 1500 HD 2WD crew cab? No lift, stock tires -- but considering one size increase to AT tires for gravel forest service road driving. Also for daily driving.

Rancho RS7MT or RS9000XL are going to feel softer and more comfortable on forest service roads, and bad roads in general. Bilstein excels at handling and that sporty feel. KYB Gas-a-Just are also a good option for a mix of both on a budget www.shocksurplus.com/search?query=%20chevy-1500

Great video. I have a question I know obviously if I wanna do a 2 in level I would buy a 2in level shock. What if I wanted to change out my factory shocks in the back just for a smoother ride than factory. Do they offer shocks for that just plain upgrade from factory?

Yes, absolutely! Depending on application, there are usually stock height options from Bilstein in the 4600 and 5100 lines as well as just about every Rancho model line

What you guys recommend for Tacoma 2012 Prerunner is stock height 4600 or 5100 sometimes heavy stuff in the bed not always. I don’t want it to be to stiff but I want something better than factory….

If you are not going off road, do not plan to lift or level it, and plan to keep it at close to the stock tire size then the 4600s would be the better choice. Otherwise the 5100 would be the way to go.

I have a 2018 ram 2500 that has the yellow bilstein shocks that i have assumed were the 4600s this whole time but noticed you said they are not the same. I was curious what the difference is and if i can expect a better ride quality over the stock versions? Thanks for your time.

Generally the factory yellow Bilsteins on most applications use a smaller piston and body than a 4600. This means in most cases, the 4600s offers better ride, handling, and overall support compared to their smaller OEM counterparts

I’ve got a 2020 Chevy 3500 HD (diesel) that came with the Rancho shocks. Looking to upgrade to a different shock for a better ride. I also pull a 35 foot 5th wheel and hardly go “off roading”. What would be a good replacement?

I would definitely be looking at either a Bilstein 4600 or an Eibach Pro Truck for the truck. The Bilsteins will be the best under a load but might be a touch firm over smaller bumps at lower speeds and the Eibach will be a bit more comfortable but may have more sway than a Bilstein under a load. Either way, both options will be exponentially more stable and a good bit more comfortable than the stock or even any aftermarket Rancho shock.

I have RS 9000 shocks on my lightweight Jeep. YJ and the adjustments are like night day difference from the stiff setting to the light is setting Iwould think on a heavy vehicle. You might not notice the adjustment that much.

Actually you probably would notice the same amount of difference on something heavier or with more motion ratio, you just generally have to set them up at the stiffer settings if that makes sense.

I run a 2020 Ram 2500 and a haul a truck camper. My GVWR with truck and camper is around 9k. I use Timbrens in the rear but the rest of the suspension is stock. I experience a lot of bucking (some call it porpoising) when driving on bumpy highways or over expansion joints. Would Bilstein 4600’s help with the bucking?

Suggestions!!! 04 tundra limited completely stock I desire to take the truck on all types of terrain and all places and daily driver 50% on road 55% off road ,desire build 2inch lift with Baja bumper with winch roof rack with gear and roof top tent carry more gear in bed and tow a trailer here and there with atv or car maybe

We immediately think about the Bilstein 6112 + 5160 setup on that vehicle, fantastic price for a 2.5 front shock and springs, would handle all the gear / load, and perform great in the terrain of choice. How well do the Rancho 9000s control rebound? My Gladiator rides horrible on the highway, I feel every bump and I inperfection in the road and on concrete interstates the truck bounces or bucks constantly, which I assume is a rebound issue. The Rancho 9000 sounds like it could improve on road ride in terms of the harshness, but I still wondering about the bouncing or bucking...

@@coltinkerstin5774 right now around 33 psi seems to be best, but over the oast 2 years, lower tire pressures made it bounce horribly. Anything below 36 psi was unbearable. Since I've removed the weight from the bed, I can run d9wn to about 32...anything less and it rides awful. I know it makes no sense and defies logic, but that's what it's doing. I'm on my second set of Falken wild peak at3ws and already gone through a set of KO2s and they all have rode the same

Truthfully the one place the Ranchos are probably the worst is in rebound. Even with the adjuster turned up they still do not do a great job at locking down bounce. Really the Bilsteins are much tighter and more controlled on rebound

I have a stock 2012 f250 diesel and want to change my shocks I have factory Ranchos on right now and I want a softer ride. It's beating the hell out of me now. What should I go with. I don't off road I really just use my truck to go to the golf course that's about it. Lol.

A set of Fox 2.0s should do a heck of a job softening things up, however they can be a little loose under a load. So if you are doing any serious towing or hauling, I would go with a set of Eibach Pro Trucks instead. They are not quite as plush as a Fox, however they are still a heck of a lot better than stock and are much more stable under a load.

Bilstein 4600 best shock for std silverado 1500, soaks up jitters better, settles fast on rebound, ride is smother, rebound bounce gone, too many say 5100 too firm on std truck, but you guys never give any feed back on 4600, 4600 wins all day on a std truck, night and day.

It depends on what vehicle you have, but most factory supplied Bilsteins are a 1.5" or smaller diameter body and the 4600, 5100 and 5160 shocks are basically a 2" body so they are capable of far more dampening force. 5100s and 5160 shocks are also zinc plated for more corrosion protection. In the case of vehicles with coil over struts from the factory the 5100s also offer ride height adjustability.

Hi I have a 2003 z71 avalanche with a 2.5" leveling kit and 33" tires, it currently has the OEM rancho shocks with 200k miles on them and theyre competly worn out so the truck bounces like a boat. I want shocks that are comfortable and floaty, I don´t tow and the max weight that I put on the bed is a dirtbike. Wich ones do you recommend?

Eibach Pro Truck Sports or Skyjacker M95s would likely be the way to go. They are a lot more plush than the stock Ranchos and even the Bilsteins and Ranchos, but being a monotube, they will still be fairly stable and supportive with weight in the bed.

We definitely find that this current generation of GM trucks is really underdamped from the factory allowing for some pretty loose characteristics as you have unfortunately been finding out. An upgraded monotube damper like a Bilstein or Eibach will do wonders for improving control and comfort.

They will install the same as the factory parts, but if you do not go with a loaded coilover like a Bilstein 6112 we have prebuilt for you or the Eibach 2.0 coilovers used in the Stage 2 and 2R kits you probably should take to a professional with a spring compressor.

I have a a 2000 ford ranger xlt, I'd like to buy some aftermarket shocks for it to increase ride quality. The truck is mostly used for daily driving with very little towing and carrying heavy stuff suck as wood. I'd like a smooth ride than can handle a few hundred lbs in the bed and still feel nice. I was looking at bilstein 5100 and rancho RS5000X I can't decide. Someone help

Bilstein will only have the 4600s for that vehicle, and would be the sportier handling setup. The Rancho would be adequate, but the Bilstein will likely last 3-4x as long - way more durable.

Sometimes that works out great, but we do find a lot of these Ranchos are a touch under damped on a lot of applications for a lot of peoples preferences particularly on rough roads at speed. They may be a touch more comfortable at low speeds, but they sacrifice a lot of stability everywhere else.

Truthfully even the 4600s should at the very least improve that issue. The stock shocks are fairly underdamped for how stiff the rear leaf springs are on the Tundras, so it really does not take much to help that out.

Shocks can not change ride height on something like a Jeep where the spring is separate of the shock. We generally do not recommend dual stabilizers as they usually make packaging a nightmare and often hurt clearance with little benefit to the steering. If you like the idea of a dual stabilizer, you can get all those benefits without the associated issues by running a pass through stabilizer like the Foix 2.0 ATS or TS. Often times they end up being cheaper as well

There are not any Chevy HD trucks currently coming with the Bilsteins, but Rancho shocks are on all the Z71s. Eitherway, 5100s are a great upgrade over the stock options

We think so for sure! To be fair we have seen every kind of shock freeze up if it gets cold enough, including Bilsteins, but they seem to be the least failure prone of all the shocks we carry regardless of the brand, temperature, or condition. If you are in an area where they salt the roads come winter time, the Bilstein zinc plating can far outlast the paint/powder coat Rancho uses with just a little bit of care as well. Just keep them somewhat clean and wipe them down or spray them with a light oil like a teflon lubricant spray when the snow starts falling, and your shocks will still look brand new by the time things thaw.

Definitely would recommend a Bilstein. They are digressively valved monotubes, so just on design alone they should handle the extra weight the best without sacrificing comfort when you do not have the plow hooked up.

Hi. I have a 2017 gmc sierra slt z71. I DO NOT ever go off road. I want to use the rancho 5000. I have 90,000 miles on the original rear shocks. I live in southern NY. When i drive on the 440 near woodbridge, my truck scoots about a foot when i hit the pavement seams. ( you know what im talking about) I dont think bilstines would be MY choice. ?????? Any suggestions? Anybody?

Definitely would not recommend the Ranchos at all. What you are explaining is the shocks being unable to damp the rate of the springs so a Bilstein 4600 would probably be the better choice.

Firestone put 9000rx on it that runs on air ride that truck doesn't have adjusted all the way still get 4 inch drop with a empty 16ft flatbed trailer.

The RS9000s do not reduce sag, if they are air operated that is just to adjust the dampening stiffness. Bilsteins would probably handle the load better but will not reduce sag whatsoever since they are just shocks. I would recommend running a set of SumoSprings or a Timbren SES bump stop kit

@ShockSurplus the mechanic that installed the shocks Firestone removed and replaced with 35.00 Monroe shocks didn't have information on on them just that they were duralast heavy-duty like 99.00 a piece I could load truck down with 27 sheets of plywood and it didn't sag but 1/2 inch and never sagged with trailer.

Shocks really have no effect on ride height nor can they reduce sag, so any additional sag you are seeing now has nothing to do with the shocks

Eibachs are not quite as tight in and handling and maybe a shade off the Bilsteins under a load, but they are a bit more comfortable. They are still a heck of a lot better than stock and any Rancho in those and any other departments as well.

If it is 4WD then the 5100s will work great at stock height or up to 2" of lift so those would be a great choice. They do not change ride height on their own, but if you decided to add a lift or leveling kit later, they would work great. There really is not an option from Bilstein for just 2" of lift in the front though. The 4600s are meant for stock height applications and the shortest set of 5100 front shocks is for a minimum of 4" of lift. If you do have a 2WD Skjacker has a set of M95s for 2-4" of lift that will work well also. They are not quite as long lasting or as good under a load, but they are close enough and still a heck of a lot better performing than a lot of other options.

I know the Bilsteins save my butt , driving at 60 mpg and a dog runs out in front of the truck and had to do some evasive maneuvers to avoid hitting the dog, the truck didn't roll side to side the Bilsteins did their job

They make 4600s for stock height trucks, but if you have any lift you are out of luck on the T100s with the Bilsteins. If you have any lift, we think the Skyjacker M95s do outperform the whole Rancho catalog.

Yup and although most aftermarket shocks help, if they do not have a rebound adjuster, we usually still want a little slower rebound off road than they offer with their off the shelf valving. That said all of these trucks still have to work on the street and often under a load which means they can only things so tight on rebound before its a bit of a handful under more normal conditions.

Best for comfort, probably Fox 2.0. Best for handling / towing / hauling - Bilstein 5100. We answer this exact question a bunch on the GM HD trucks, those torsion bar suspensions mixed with the factory stock shocks make for a lot of slop.
