The 550i is a great car. I own a 2020 BMW M550i and it’s a totally different animal. It also has the N63 but in TU3 version with 530HP and 577TQ. The original N63 was a reliability mess but the TU, TU2, and finally TU3 which stands for technical updates made it so since about 2018 when the M550 was introduced the N63 is a rock solid motor with very little reliability concern.

My aunt also has a 2020 M550i and I get to drive it sometimes and it is an absolute beast that can bully just about anything on the road. I like to have a little bit too much fun in that car sometimes. In a way it is also kind of a sleeper car because of how unassuming it looks.

Hey Randy, the storage tray in the Mercedes trunk extends downwards. Just push hard down on the fabric, and you can put heaps in it. Stops groceries or fragile things from moving around.

I'd take the BMW over the Mercedes any day! It all comes down to how much was spent to buy it, the maintainence, and the insurance. The BMW is older, has less "fancy" electronics, and is "cheaper" to maintain *when* *compared* to the S63 AMG. I think this is a great car for Nick in high school! If he wants that fox body, then he can buy one later down the road!

I currently have a 2020 BMW M5 Competition and a 2018 BMW 740i and love them both. I prefer my BMWs but I would consider a Mercedes C63 or S63 AMG

i have a 2010 528i (n52 I6 which is completely different) with 212k miles and i haven’t had a single issue. i like my interior far more then the E class and it drove way better then the benz. parts on my car are surprisingly cheap and it been extremely reliable. i bought it in september 2023 with 184k and now i have 212k. that should tell you something

Personally , I would get BMW I've already had one once before ! Mine was a 528 ! That car was pretty fast too ! I looked down at the speedometer on my way to work one morning and I was doing 95 in it ! It didn't feel like it at all !

I have to wonder if part of the reliability problems with this, and other, bmw engines were due to (at least in some instances) inadequate servicing and/or not allowing the turbos to cool down sufficiently before turning the engine off.

It was due to the high heat in the V of the motor plus the fact that BMW programs the vehicle to run at 105c to 110c water temperatures. Add in way too long service intervals and these motors cooked themselves rather soon. IF you install a cooler thermostat and change the oil more often it will be far less problematic.

I would like to have both cars lol. I’d daily the bmw and weekend the benz. I’d just have to get the windows tinted and put some new wheels on it. I didn’t like those GTs at first but it has grown on me over the years. It having the v8 definitely helps me like it. And even Nick likes it. That would be a cool and fast first car. I hope he gets it.

Some non-blended repairs that the camera really picks up, on that BMW, the driver side rear door has been replaced or repaired and possibly passenger side behind the rear passenger window. I know you've said it's just the light, but it's not, they've been repaired or replaced. Always can see these on these youtube videos when it doesn't quite match, not just yours, other channels also.

That shelf in the Mercedes trunk looks like it would be ideal for a laptop bag. It would keep it out of sight for people that break out peoples windows to reach into the trunk area. It wouldn't be bouncing around all over the trunk or anywhere in the cabin. That may be what its really for, who knows what they had in mind for it

Is basically a 7 series vs a sklass because the 5gt is based on f01 7 series. The problem with compression is that the sklass is top of the line loaded and 5gt is kinda basic spec. Also last button on seat is for the thight support part which should be automatic and is broken

I personally prefer the BMW even with the N63/S63 motors which was known for reliability issues and I know as fixed a few including having to replace these motor as rod bearing love to fail on them and then the old rod though the block. You have to keep the oil level to max and most people don’t, then combine the valve stem seals going hard and dual turbo these engines have a huge oil consumption even when motor is 100% and seals are good. People don’t realize it and of course rod bearings goes bad. The. You have the crap plastic guides in timing that become brittle and break. Yes the original N63/S63 were a disaster waiting to happen. Thankfully they resolve a lot of the issues with the later TU versions of the engine. I just like the way the BMW drives and how large space you get. Then again worked at a BMW dealer as a master technician for years so kind of know them well. The Mercedes is built better especially interior but still prefer the BMW . I just use to them and comfortable to drive long distances. They just ride smoother, faster on takeoff. I do my own maintenance and fixed a lot of issues so keep it running good. Plus have the later more reliable TU engine. I always say I wish you got the built quality of the Mercedes and then the BMW would be a perfect car. Being your made it to over 100k means someone actually took care of it and actually did the maintenance and likely fix the common design issues like timing guides, valve stem seals and other issues. Do agree the Mercedes is just way more expensive to maintenance despite the BMW typical N63/S63 issues.

Randy I hear your preaching on a inferior car towards the mercedis. I say this because BMW made for 2years waranty in Europe. We drive cars with speed in Europe and people owning BMW buying new one within 2 years because of it's out of warantee and then the problems starting. You yust a very lucky in buying these cars. I worked for a Limo company we had both Mercedes S550 and BMW 740li the BMW was a lot better car the Mercedes were always in the shop or had some sort of warning light on. THE BMW was also faster in my opinion

Honestly I'd say it would be impossible issues they're both great cars I think it's the Mercedes-Benz has more features and I would probably choose it over the BMW the Mercedes-Benz is really far superior in build quality but what are they honestly they're both really great currency to get really lousy gas and I'll let you go honestly too quick but if that's your thing driving cars to get really lousy mileage in the air or gasoline prices are absolutely outrageous go for it you must be a clown that has a lot more money than me to be going out and spending that kind of money for those cars
