Timely video Randy! Just fixed my leaky sunroof on my 2016 Ram. Passenger dash and footwell getting wet, water running out of A pillar grab handle! Dealer wanted $1200 to "disassemble" the headliner because the "hose was disconnected". I said no. Took it home and after learning how to be a contortionist, I looked in there and saw the hose was still connected. I used the fattest string trimmer line I could get and fished it down the hole. Sure enough there was debris near the drain at the sunroof clogging it. And yes, my drain exits in the door jamb on the A pillar, too! There isn't much holding the drain tube to the drain fitting so using compressed air might blow the hose off? I liked my string trimmer line approach. I was done in 20 minutes, had to take nothing apart, and saved $1200. A little quality dish detergent worked well to clean the headliner stains. Thanks for the great how to video!!

I hate sunroofs. They are more trouble than they are worth. Every car I have owned with them gave me problems. Good job fixing the problem Randy.

To be honest I really enjoy seeing BMWs and Mercedes on this channel and I think the BMW 550 GT is a pretty cool looking car, I seen a white one on the Freeway they are not bad.

nice to see the inner workings of a sunroof. I may have left it undone and blew a fan on the damp spots over night or let sit under the hot sun for a day.

I for one surely fixed my notorious sunroof leak on my 2006 Hummer H3 by professionally 3M sealing the whole damn thing up top (Lol) and then disconnecting the open and close button options, no time for a leaking roof causing other damage 😊 I can still see the sky by opening the interior roof slider, don't need that window open 👍 Thanx Randy 4 sharing how to actually fixing the sunroof drains ✅

Hello Randy, I have owned a handful of modern & non-modern BMWs, and most of these cars will have sunroof drain issues due to lack of service & cleanliness. (Common sense). I like to use thin lawnmower wire & a splash of draino (Diluted with water). On my daily BMW, the water was leaking out the door similarly, But due to my sound insulation not being properly adhered to the door, water would seep through, causing puddles on the carpet. I'd recommend using lawnmower wire & another gallon of water should do the trick, also do not forget about the rear drains.

Great video Randy! I guess you and I are alike - I really like these cars - they have several "issues" but keep them maintained and spend some (or maybe a lot) of money on catching up on "deferred" work that needs to be done and I think it would be a nice overall practical and fun ride...

We own a 26 year old Legacy wagon. The driver side sunroof had the same problem as the BMW, the rubber hose comes loose from the plastic drain connection. The old rubber hose was very short and no longer would stay on, so I used a very small hose clamp to hold it on.

You can use the thicker weed wacker line to snake the drain hose if it gets clogged

High pressure compressed air can sometimes detach the pipe from the drain hole.

My wife’s C300 has a very similar sunroof draining system as your BMW. When it clogged, I used a 500ml syringe and three feet of tubing to push down the drain hole and flush with pressurized water from the syringe. Be sure to hold on the tube and use your body to push the syringe unless you want to wear 500ml of water… Ask me how I know… You may need to do this two or three times; but eventually you will see the blockage get blown out of the bottom of the drain.

Randy,I had a 323i,the sun roof drains plug up,and you found them,the front fender towards the bottom between the wheel and front door,trash piles up,you have to loosen the bottom splash guard and you will find a pile of trash.

I had a similar issue with a 1998 Renault Scenic (Americans dodged that bullit) with double sunroof. I just cut the tips of the hose in the undercarriage and problem solved apart from that crap of a car that was a problem itself.

Thank you so much for this video. Our Nissan Frontier has a sunroof and it is leaking. Oddly enough out of 2 different places first it was where the sunglasses go and not by the driver side visor so this video might help us out with getting it fixed

I was told not to use compressed air on those cuz you can blow them apart. They werent meant to hold pressure. I know they make really long pipe cleaners for this.

Don’t forget the two drain holes in the back of the sunroof, the reason why the hoses get disconnected is because people use compressed air and then they pop off 😉

That’s strange where the water is coming out. I wonder Randy i have a moonroof if i ever have a leak if the holes where clogged in the same spot.

Under the carpet there might be 5 inches of foam, older models had that. In effect a giant sponge that never gets rid of water

Hey guys, A better way to clean the drain and see where it drains as well is to use some kinda thin but strong weed eater string. Work it done the whole and woosh. Thank me later!!

I bought my dad’s old car and right before I got it the windshield was replaced and during that process the hose was disconnected and never reconnected. Happens pretty often apparently
