Some Jags are not real Jags. They have the cats skin somewhat,(steel not aluminum) , and the growler but then you pump the brakes. X-types aand S-types are mostly another brand. Right down to the electrics and drivetrain. Those 2 models should have been made the right way or not ever have been made. For a solid , well designed and long lasting Jag, stick to 1990 and up XJS's or Xj6/xj(8. 2001 up on the Xk8. Earlier models if the vehicles had the timing tensioners and guides replaced in time. 2004-2009 XJ's are a great value. Just be sure all the coolant hoses ,the water pipe, therm and heater hose are changed every 10yr/100k mls. At the same time evacuate system and refill using only the orange stuff. Don't forget new belts while you are in there. If you do basic maintenance, make sure the sunroof drains are always clear to avoid wetting electrical wiring on the pass side, learn to properly shop for new and used replacement parts, i can say with certainty....You will spend less to own/drive a used Jaguar than your neighbor with a Toyota and a Ford.

51 years as an auto mechanic, and still doesn't get the X-Type. Sad to see. I've owned my X-Type for 17 years, done all the service and repairs on it myself, and that is not much at all, on the contrary. Very little service and repair is needed on this excellent car that is incredibly great and fun to drive. When I got myself a new Jag, my wife wanted to keep to X-Type for herself, of course she got to do that. So she's the one driving it most of the time these days, and I'm still doing the service. 17 year old car and I bet it will be still going strong in another 17 years. If you want a really great car, for a sum way below the real value of the car, get an X-Type. Thanks to guys like Scotty, who doesn't understand the car, it's way underpriced. Really good purchase. As with any second hand car, you need to check out what you're buying, not everyone takes good care of their cars, even though Jaguars are overrepresented when it comes to good maintenance. Jaguar owners care for their cars, simply because it's generally people who do care about their car, that gets a jaguar ... :D

I have an ‘09 Lancer with CVT for over 110,000 miles. I’ve changed the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles with OEM fluid. Then the CVT filters and the fluid every 60,000 miles were replaced. I have no whines, no major repairs and it always pass inspection. So it really depends on how meticulous its owner is on maintenance. It’s the most reliable car I’ve owned💁🏻♂️

I bought a used rental. The trick is basically taking your salesmen on a long test drive. You see they put very little gas in the cars so you only want to take a short test drive. Never, always go by the gas station and put a few gallons of gas in it. If he asks, " it's to test the fuel gauge and evaporation system". Check all the fluids, oil, coolant levels, even washer fluid, test that.....i missed that and it was a pia to fix. Now you drive and listen for rattles, squeels, anything out of the ordinary. At some point hit the highway and test that thing. Then bring it back to the gas station and re-check all the fluids after 25 to 30 miles and some highway speed. At that point you buy a car or put some gas in some crappy car, better than buying a crappy car. Plus any faults you can either have repaired or negotiate price more.

Spent 1600 for a 02 S430 Benz with 130k on the clock. Enjoyed the car so far, very minor issues I fixed myself. Rides smoother than any newer car i have drived. Not alot of $ put into it except a 800 dollar paint job. 500 on a Jag is a gamble like I did but it can pay off and if you can get at like 10k or more miles on it for under 1k , not bad at all👍

My girlfriend and I have is a 2004 X-Type with about 120,000 miles that we use as a spare car and all it's needed is 1: a new radiator hose (her dad dropped his cigar under the hood and it burned a hole into the original hose) and 2: a new battery. It hasn't given either of us any problems, and my girl's had it since 2009 when she inherited it from her grandfather. Granted, we only drive it when our usual cars are in the shop or if we're taking friends out to dinner - a Jag is usually better to be seen at a fancy restaurant - but still, that X-Type hasn't given us any issues. Maybe some Jags aren't so bad after all.

Well, Scotty just 'splained this: I have thre Acuras (i.e., Hondas): '97 Integra, '06 RSX, and '09 TSX - and they all use the same dinky 500 CCA battery! The good part is that I can interchange batteries easily - handy in the winter when the battery of one of the outdoor-parked cars goes dead. Bad part is they go dead a lot because they're barely up to the job of starting a car in winter when they're new!

Anyone recommend older BMWs like 07-09 I’m in the process of buying one and heard nothing but good things if you take care of them. Im getting an 09 3 Series with 86k miles on it and I only need it to last about 4-5 years or like 250k. I have a friend that has an 07 that hit 240k last week and he hardly has to fix it. I’m pretty handy and a lot of people I know own BMWs so I know it can be relatively inexpensive to keep up with besides filling up with premium. I live in Houston and Premium in the suburbs is unbelievably cheap. Besides the minor dings it drives great and it’s my first car so I don’t care about the cosmetics. We also checked the engine for the common problems in the 3 series and none were present. The valve cover looked great. It was also in an “accident” but it was an unnoticeable ding on the left side and we checked the hood and underneath and it was untouched. So is this a steal or should I look elsewhere?

So true on the F150 used. I bought an F150 used with 12,000 miles on it (but it was five years old, owner was 85 years old). Anyway, I paid him less than HALF of what he paid for the truck new. Its not like I stole it either, guy had it for sale for 2 weeks. I've put 110,000 miles on it so far, no problem. I use it mainly for towing, the V8 is a winner. Once you tow, the EB motors don't get any better fuel economy, and the V8s do pretty good. F150s depreciate so fast. Let someone else take the hit and you can get a barely used truck for not much money! Now new, I would have gotten a Tundra instead.

An F150 or Toyota Tacoma? Towing with any vehicle, get a manual transmission. I had to rent a car once or twice. I took care of them while in my possession. When my dearly departed beloved 2002 Subaru Outback wagon was in the shop several times before it committed suicide (the Subaru, not the repair shop), they let me have an old Ford Taurus as a loaner car.
