@@crux314 You can easily wear it in a standard pant or shorts pocket but you're going to feel it . Keep in mind this is a 4 layer knife. I wear it in my pocket all the time. Would I want it in my back pocket while driving - probably not. If you want a true disappear in your pocket type knife that you could wear with anything check out the Victorianox Bantum. A good balance between those two for you might be the Victorianox Army 7.

Thanks for the review of a lovely selection of these great knives - I have carried Pioneers for more than 50 years as my edc knife. Just my perspective of course, but good weapons handling to me, means never allow any blade to snap back without control. Always keep hold of it and ease it home. Also, never complete opening by touching a cutting edge or point. When you are cold, wet, tired or in any other way distracted, the correct muscle memory is to handle the blades like they may bite you.

I have a small collection of 9 different SAKs, largely due their ability to be EDC in the UK (discounting the locking models). In the Alox range I use the Bantam as my literal EDC knife as it so slim, has the tools needed most around the home & garden and the lack of key ring save my trouser pocket linings! The second is the Farmer X, bought as a replacement for my 1984 Huntsman as the main blade wore out (cannot find a way to restore the sharpness). The presence of both the wood saw and scissors is ideal for my camping trips. 😃

My 2 cents; the benefit of an Alox is really the slim profile, so the perfect Alox for me would be one that has the best tools in the most slim profile. I'd love to see a two layer 93mm alox with the big scissors, big blade and bottle-opener multi-tool (bonus points if they add a file on the side). Essentially the pioneer X but dropping a layer by removing the can-opener and punch. That would be perfection. Closest to date for me is either the pioneer x (but a bit large) or the bantam (but smaller knife/no scissors).

The Farmer-X has been my go-to when I'm in the woods, almost since the day Victorinox introduced it. It does everything I ever ask from a knife/multitool. Can't find a better all-around knife, for the size and weight. I also keep one in my Altoids tin PSK; fits perfectly.

Very nice rundown of your faves. I have both a Farmer X and Pioneer X. Between the 2, I much prefer the PX for regular carry. I thought the Farmer X would become my favorite outdoor knife, but that still goes to my Woodsman. It's chunky but it has everything I need out in the woods. If I had a top 5 Alox it would have to include the Mini Champ. So many functions in a very small size.

The thing about the mini champ is it has lots of tools, but functionality wise I really don't think it's much different than a classic sd alox. If you go through the tools there's lots of duplication, e.g. 3 blades, a file/flathead/nail tool that are in effect adding no functionality beyond the single file/screwdriver tool on the classic. In reality the only useful tool beyond the classic SD that exists on the mini champ (IMO of course) is the phillips multi-tool, which is a good one, but not sure it's worth twice the height/weight/cost.

I’ve always loved the Farmer for my outdoor/yard work knife, but the Farmer-X put it over the top. The saw is perfect for cutting down small saplings that try to take over the yard, and has helped cut openings for electrical boxes in drywall and other mundane tasks around the house.

My favourite Swiss army knife is not a Victorinox at all but a 1961 pattern Wenger Soldat or Standard Issue manufactured in '95. I far prefer the bail it has to the keyring on the Victorinox versions. The reamer, or punch as you call it is a fantastically versatile tool.

Those of us who never leave the house without our folders really appreciate Alox scales because it IS so thin. My father, a minister, purchased an early Alox scaled knife around 1974 and carried it everywhere. It fit well whether he was out camping or preaching at a prayer meeting in his suit. It has great form factor and the scales have good gripping surface. These folders are also very durable...his is good today as when he carried it out of the shop...!!

I've never seen a 93 mm with "Victorinox" on the engraving plate, only 58 mm. But the colored ones often come with a shop/group logo since it's required by Victorinox.

To begin with, I'm not a big fan of the alox tools, but .I'd put the Pioneer X ahead of the Farmer X, simply because I almost never need the saw. If I'm going someplace outdoors where I might need a saw, I'm probably carrying my Rangergrip 79, which has a considerably longer and therefore more useful saw.

As much as I use the awl, if they ever offered a Farmer with the sheepsfoot in place of the awl it would be my new favorite. A sheepsfoot is the safest way to perform any piercing operation with a slip joint, which is basically the one thing SAK's dont do terribly well, but I simply cant bring myself to sacrifice the small screwdriver/ can opener.

TBH I'd prefer the small pruning blade(box opener) instead of the small blade. Don't like the "X" as I really don't like the scissors. I don't find them useful day to day, and rarely use it. I DO however enjoy the Pioneer... the size is more comfortable than the Cadet for regular use.

I've carried swiss army knives for over 28 years and It a shame that because of the backwards knives laws that you cannot carry the more modern models that are safer to use because they have locking blades and even modern pocket bushcraft survival knives with blades less than 3 in are still blanned because they are Spring assisted opening but aren't switchblade knives and even the swiss army champ suddenly become illegal to carry because of the change in the way the main blade is measured it used to be just the cutting edge but now it's the whole blade from tip to handle Hilt some of which is the hinge and not the blade

Ive caried a swiss tool daily in the uk for years, it never leaves my side and transfers from my work clothing to whatever im wearing in the evening. I really wouldnt worry, as long as you dont threaten anyone no one is going to be bothered. I also carry a pioneer x. I have a many folding technically legal knives that would be farr more intimidating than my swiss tool.

Cadet is one of the most underrated model but for Alox line, I find Cadet proportion looks the best. It is not the best one and only VSA knife choice, cuz then I’ll nominate Pioneer for that (One and only VSA is best equip with scissors). But when you have other VSA then that’s where the Cadet shines. Days you don’t need all tools, it is your best friend. And it is plenty capable for most tasks, leave the rest for other models.

Try and improve your blade discipline. Don't use the blade edge to complete blade opening (demonstrated here on the awl and the file).
