Here's Why I Will Never Buy Another Gas HD

Gas HD use case is pretty simple: Short distance driving and long term ownership. I believe a huge amount of money and headache can be saved for a long term buyer (10-20 year ownership) with a gas instead of diesel. 50-60k for a basic gas HD versus the fully loaded diesels at 100k is a massive difference. If you are already spending a ton for a high trim it makes more sense to add the diesel option. People should buy what they need and want and forget the trolls.

I think you're correct saving money over the long term w gas, but if a basic gas HD is 50-60K, a basic diesel HD is 50-60K +10K so you're comparison isn't an equal one. I got an nicely optioned 3500 LT CC ordered w a diesel, but it's not much over 70K msrp. I probably could have gotten away w a lower trim level, but I wasn't willing to buy a black interior. My use case requires more range than a gasser than a 36gal tank offers, which put the 7.3 in contention, but no way am I buying a Ford SD.

i've owned 2 diesels and went to the 7.3L Godzilla. I keep my trucks for a long time, and for me, it's not worth the headaches that diesels bring to the table. Fully loaded my fifth wheel weighs in right at 11,200 lbs. My gas truck with the 10 speed and 3.55 gears tows it with ease, In my opinion this is the best thing Ford and Chevy ever did was to collaborate with each other on the 10 speed it made a world of difference for gas engine towing.

I absolutely got hammered by fellow RVers for buying my 2022 Ram 2500 6.4 gas Laramie 4x4 off road. Little did they know I could have towed 80 % of their RV's. The pin weight accounted for about 20% that I couldn't tow. My next truck will be a 2024 Chevy 3500 gas with the Allison transmission hd LT with upgraded convenience packages as well as a Z71 package on a long bed crew cab. I'm waiting until December. Moving from an F150 to an F350, I chewed on the Gas vs Diesel thing a lot. There is SO much content out there about this topic (and it's how I found your channel). After SO much research I ordered the diesel for one reason: I *hate* stopping for gas while towing my travel trailer. When I learned I could go further on the same amount of diesel, AND I can go through the truck lanes and not worry about minivans flying in from all directions, it was an easy call. The L8T gas engine mated to the Allison 10 speed is a fantastic combo. I’m loving mine and I’m a guy who’s 3 last trucks were 6.6 Duramaxs

Ditto on that! I have had a diesel since 2005, with the LLY Duramax then 2018 with L5P, had a bunch of issues...ditched it and have a 2024 GMC 2500HD AT4 6.6 Gas. Love it, drives so nice!

The so called Allison 10speed is really just GM transmission, it really is not a true Allison transmission. GM bought the name.

I agree. I don't care if the 10-speed is actually built by Allison or not. The fact is that it is great for towing. I just bought (a few months ago, at the time of this post) a Chevy 3/4 ton HD High Country, and I love the Chevy V8 gasser with 10-speed transmission. It's a great tow vehicle for my 10k# toy hauler. The gas haters can hate all they want, but it is a good tow vehicle and suits my needs perfectly.

Love my gasser. 23 3500 chevy. It is a little bouncy empty on this utah highway. But not having to worry about cold starting at the cabin in bearlake, no def bs, and saving $10k on the diesel option when it was new. All made sense to me. I tow mostly during spring summer and fall 20 times or so a year. Yes diesel tows amazing! But the gasser is totally fine also. I get around 17 mpg not towing. 10 towing.

Agree with you on the cable slide out. My new RV has rack and pinion, and I’m glad for it. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy a gas HD. Ended up staying with a half ton because the sales manager talked me out of an HD. “If you don’t need it stay with a half ton.” I’m glad I did. Better gas, mileage, easier to drive, easier to park. And it still gets the job done towing my 7,000 pound travel trailer.

You are so right about the guys that hate on gas trucks. They still think this is the gas HDs of old that were gutless. Ford really moved the needle with the 7.3, and both Ram and GM put better transmissions on their gas HDs and changed the game substantially for them. Yes, it is usually a good rule of thumb to buy "more truck than you need", BUT: Diesel ownership is certainly pros and cons. You get amazing capabilities, can pull just about anything, and yes, resale value is currently insane because of the HD market. BUT, ownership costs, maintenance, up-front costs on a new truck(extra $10K AT LEAST), and long terms emissions issues due to complexity have to be factored in. All 3 will eventually need costly components replaced down the line. Unless you're really towing heavy often or working in situations where diesel power is necessary, there is nothing wrong with a modern gas truck. Most of them tow 15K with ease and have higher payload capacities. And yes, I think the market is starting to really cool off. Ram was in dire straights, but now Ford and GM are offering deals on their HDs, and this is even on top of the factories striking and no trucks were made for a few weeks.

This is backwards. Old diesel engines were gutless. Dodge put out a gas v10 in 94 with 300hp and 450 lb/ft. It would run circles around any stock diesel from that time. The problem with old gas engines was fuel economy.

My Ford F250 7.3 Godzilla has been fantastic! I tow a 8500# 30ft travel trailer about 6-8 times a year. It’s been a great truck.

💯 I bought a ‘24 2500HD gasser this year. I specifically wanted the 10 speed transmission with the gas engine. My travel trailer has a GVWR of about 7500 pounds. I’m not towing heavy, but I wanted the 3/4 ton for towing long distances on cross country trips in the coming years. I also don’t tow full time, and didn’t want the extra cost, weight, or maintenance of a diesel. Resale was less of a concern because I buy and keep trucks for a long time. When I was shopping it was very frustrating because I specifically did not want a diesel, but that’s what dealers were ordering, and nobody could give me a straight answer on lead time to custom order. Thankfully I found what I needed at a dealer that was only about an hour away from me. These new gas HD trucks are great, and it was the right choice for my use case.

I've owned diesel trucks and now have a new ram with the 6.4. It doesn't tow like a diesel but easily gets the job done. Diesel is great until something goes wrong with them then it ends up costing you a lot of money to fix them.

I tow my 12k fifth wheel with my 2022 6.4 Ram. I considered trading in and getting a diesel because I was listening to the masses. As luck would have it, my dealer gave me a diesel HD Ram to drive while my truck was in the shop get a new bumper. I immediately booked a trip and hooked it to my fifth wheel. It climbed the mountains in TN better and the exhaust brake was great to have but the difference wasn’t enough for me spend an extra 10K. I think people would be more open minded if they were able to have real world experiences with both. It like everything else. People dig in on one side or the other and common sense goes out the window.

I don't drive or tow my gas HD that much, so the miles stay low. I do tons of short trips around town that would probly be bad for a diesel. My only beef against gas is when I tow my 5th wheel it's a pain to fuel while towing. You definitely have to trip plan, fuel early or late when there's no traffic at gas stations. I love my gas hd. I bought it to tow heavy short distances once in great while. I tow lighter (sometimes long distances) almost weekly. For my use case it's perfect. I think for the vast majority of guys the gas makes more sense. The amount of gas hate, just because, is truly unfortunate.

You are absolutely spot on. If you are towing a windsail under 12000 pounds. Or a much higher weight that's sleekly, aerodynamic gas is the way to go. Diesels are expensive to buy, to maintain, to drive. They make STRONG gassers across all 3 manuf now. If you don't need a cat loader then get a skid steer. Thumbs up agree with your premise. 👍

I love my 24 gmc sle 2500, I came from a deleted f250 in California. I rarely tow but my payload and towing capacity is higher! It’s not as fast . But it will do the job just fine. I appreciate your channel, keep it going! Gas trucks are cheaper,easier to maintain, warm up fast. If I was towing every day I could justify a diesel. I tow at most 5 times a year. My 6.6 with the branded Allison is amazing.

True that about gas, maintenance is more in diesel. Gas price here in CA is same price as 92 oct,$5.69 diesel, $5.49 87 oct, $5.59 92 oct. I towed maybe 1X a year.

I have a gas '18 ram 2500 w/ram boxes. It's awesome. It's gonna tow my 9,000lb travel trailer easily. And no DEF system to deal with and the headaches they cause. When I look into newer trucks I always build gas models to save $10-12k. That premium isn't worth it and I'd have to keep it a decade and 500k miles to break even on the price difference. Just not worth it to me.

I love my Ram 3500 diesel with the HO Cummins and 410 rear end. As to the cable slides; Keystone, Alliance, and Heartland have gone from Schwintek slides to cable slides because of how unreliable Schwintek has become. Personally I think the Schwintek looks better but if there’s a lot of problems with them then I don’t blame the manufacturers for changing. The problem with cable slides is that some manufacturers put them on either a kitchen or living room which are too heavy. They should be fine in a bedroom.

JB,love my 6.6 2024 GMC AT4 gas 3500 HD with the 10 speed Allison. Power without end. My truck pulls 15-17k pounds as if it is empty. My only disappointment with the 2024 compared to the 2021 GMC 3500 that I had was that I had hoped that there would be a little boost in the mpg, it is virtually the same. I do agree with you that in filling up it would be nice to do so at thediesel pumps, it sometimes is a little crowded and tight at the gas pumps pulling my flatbed trailer. But, being from N. MN I don't want a diesel. We have problems here with cold. Fuel gelling and the filters are so fine now that it is becoming more common. One last thing is the diesel emissions. I farm. Bought a brand new MF tractor one year ago and have had nothing ut problems with diesel emissions. It is so bad that Agco is replacing the tractor at no cost to me. I'm sticking with gas however. I know its not cool but gas is the best fit for me. In all the years I've owned new trucks I've not lost a whole lot of money trading gas for gas. HD gas is exactly what I’m looking for. I owned 3 diesels. And with these emissions. And repair costs. Price the injectors and fuel systems. The DPF is $7k. Change the oil every 3k mi and run distilled water with a filter Keep fuel and air filters clean. You good.

I’m about to order either a gas ZR2 or a gas High Country. I farm but I just don’t tow heavy often anymore with some changes we’ve made recently. Hauled two big loads with the gooseneck this summer, but that’s the first time I’ve even used that trailer in a couple of years. I love my Cummins I have now and the Duramax before it but I could use the extra payload and lower cost more than the maxed towing for my use.

you nailed it ive had 2 duramaxes a lly (lt) and a lml (ltz z71} both tuned and deleted that pulled anything and everything. I usually haul vehicles or trailer loads of atvs, I now own a 19 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 and 3.73 gears and the Laramie package it has been an awesome truck even leveled on 35" tires it has never skipped a beat pulling things through the various mountain ranges in Montana. I will never look down on gas trucks again.

Your perspective is right on. And if this electrification ever takes place people are gonna wish they had a gas hd!

I towed 7k travel trailer with a 2017 Tundra crew std bed. It pulled it fine at about 2.3k 2.5k RPM, but swayed too much for Cross State Driving. I recently picked up this 2024 Gas 2500 AT4 to provide more stability and payload from the length and the weight. I havent towed with yet, but cant wait to try it out. The Diesel didn't make sense for me at $10,000 premium. Plus Diesel is 35 percent higher per gallon. It would take waay too many miles to recoupe that, just for a little extra torque.

I actually ran the numbers using your videos. It would take 245,000 miles to break even with the worse MPG. That does not include additional diesel maintenance. There is the argument of better resell but I think that’s primarily based on the non-neutered last gen diesels. With the same 10 speed tranny that resell should help also. I’ll be towing 10-12k maybe once a month. Daily driver unloaded all the other times. My daily commute is 10 total miles on surface streets. I was super concerned about carbon build up with all my short distances. If the worst thing I have to worry about is slower to get to speed at 6,000 foot elevation and 6% grades (but will eventually get there) I could not justify the $9k price increase. I live at sea level lol

I have both. Ram 2500 6.4 gasser and a Chevy 6.6 duramax and a ram with a 6.7. We tow with all of them. I find myself grabbing the keys to the gasser the most. I am actually thinking of trading in the Ram 6.7 for a Ram 3500 dually gasser. I have no complaints out of the 6.4 and the 8 speed.

I have a 2022 F350 with the 7.3 gas engine in a Platinum dually. Talk about an odd truck. I love it. I live in West Texas and people are visibly offended when they find out that MY truck has a gas engine. I just laugh it off. Diesel fanboys just don’t get it. I tow a 14,000 pound FW and it does a great job. In all fairness, I never got the diesel bug myself.

I too pondered gas vs diesel, but I don't do a lot of trailering, but want a nicely appointed truck. I do haul a 24' box racing trailer, and a 22' tip bed for my cars and Bobcat. Most are short trips. Anyways, after talkin with many who pulled the big travel trailers, the honest ones said it comes out about even when it comes to costs of driving and maintaining. More on gas for fuel, more on diesels for maintenance and repairs. I bought the gasser and have over 252k on the dial and am ready to get a 2024, which will also be a gasser, and I can get the High Country 2500HD with the options I want for 63-67k without bartering right now, as they are selling slowly right now. If I spent more time on long trips or more hours, I would get the diesel. Again, it is what you need or even want vs cost of ownership due mainly to your driving needs. Just another opinion, but I have no issues pulling with the big gasser.

I have had every brand of diesel truck and recently bought a F250 with the 7.3 and matted to that 10 speed it does what I need it to here in Colorado. Is it as fast? Absolutely not, but not having to deal with the emissions and the extra cost involved in owning a diesel I am done and will never own a newer diesel again.

We did a cost of ownership comparison video on our channel and the outcome is we look for 2015+ gas work trucks. Our $5k cheap truck cost us $10k in repairs and our $60k diesel didn’t get much better mpg and really wasn’t that much faster in the 0-60 acceleration (with a loaded trailer).

It seems there are always several "camps" in any group. In a previous video you mentioned the private jet group. I work in that arena and can tell you that among my clients with big trucks, they are all diesel, less than 2 model years old, top trim levels and higher end after market add ons, money is no object. They have goose neck balls that have never been turned over and bumper pull balls without a scratch and likely have never performed or know how to perform any service on the vehicle. They pay someone else to do that. No problem with that. The other camp I'm familiar with own everything from repowered trucks from the 1940's they built in the back yard to the present level truck featured, towing race trailers, enclosed and multi car, week after week sometimes operating as the primary work vehicle, in all trims levels from crapped out basic to full AI controlled, every make, diesel and gas powered. They usually do everything they can mechanically and farm out what they can't therefore making ownership of big PU's more affordable. IMO, it is a matter of economics and the present market being driven by opinions as you describe. Car makers are out of touch with pricing and dealers have no choice but to follow. Ultimately, it is the consumer that drives the market. The best truck is the one you decide on based on what you need.

I haven't had any issues ( knock on wood) besides towing my 2022 Keystone Cougar 290RLS and the horrible gas mileage it's been fine. Yeah I have heard a lot of negative comments. They don't bother me everyone has an opinion. I maintain both my truck and my 5th wheel what else can you do. Your right it is what is is.

Diesels got way to many problems unless your pulling down the interstate. The emissions def water in fuel etc. All the fleet services are swapping to gas due to the constant break downs and shop time. A truck in the shop ain't making money its costing money gas maybe slower pulling but you will get there most likely unlike diesel leaving you stranded.

Hey JB! I don't think it a gas versus diesel conversation. I think it's all about affordability and I'm convinced a huge price correction is coming on HD trucks. You mentioned RAM is offering $15K discounts, even higher in some cases, because nobody is buying $85K to $100K trucks. Dealers are sitting with HD truck inventories that have 280+ days sitting on the lot. BTW, I bought one of those super discounted RAM HD diesels (my first diesel) because it became affordable. After towing with it, I totally get why the gas versus diesel topic starts holy wars. There is a solid case for either choice.

As a person with NO knowledge of Diesel ownership, I've been doing what probably 10s of thousands of folks are doing now too...watching all the videos I can to see if I can piece together some logical comparison between gas and diesel ownership. Here's the key things I see that lead me toward a gas truck; positives: cheaper, no crazy maintenance (like dealing with filter management or regen) and non-towing ownership, but the downside being diesel gives crazy good torque for pulling the rv and it allows me to pull a 5th wheel into the gas pump easier. To me, my biggest fear at the moment is maintenance stuff that may be getting megaphoned on the internet unfairly... things like "I drive an extra long route home to deal with the regen, can't get off this exit and go downtown because of my exhaust...." What the heck does that even mean?

My wife and I bought a '24 Chevy 2500HD High Country, 6.6l gas, 10-speed tranny. We pull a 10K#-ish bumper-pull toy hauler, with a 950 Harley on board. AFter deciding to upgrade to 3/4 ton, I debated diesel vs gas V8. We plan to own this truck for at least a decade. I decided on V8 gas (w/ the 10-speed tranny, which I think is a game changer for tow trucks). Here's why I went gas: I don't need the low-rpm torque for my application, I didn't want to pay the $10K upcharge for the Duramax diesel, I don't want to pay the extra costs for periodic (and unexpected) maintenance or repairs. The somewhat better MPG of the diesel wouldn't start saving me money for a decade probably. Recently, I pulled my 10K# toy hauler through the Colorado Rockies, and the V8 gasser never missed beat. After about 3 months of driving the Chevy 3/4 ton V8 gas High Country, if I had the opportunity to back up and choose again, I'd make the same decision. If you need the low-rpm torque of a diesel, you need it. Get it. Most trailer-pullers don't though (if they'll be honest with themselves). Truck buyers need to be honest with themselves. Do their own research and make informed decisions. I am NOT a diesel hater at all, but the the 3/4 HD Chevy is the right choice for my application... easily.

Odd... I'm in the opposite camp now. I keep my trucks a while. My 2013 duramax was nothing but emissions system headaches that threatened to strand me too many times. I'm usually towing about 10k lbs max. I'm planning to get one of the 2024+ 6.6l gas based on my needs. I am hesitant to get another modern diesel with all of the unreliable emissions systems the EPA pushes on us. Story would be different if I was towing heavier I think and I hope I'm not going to regret my planned upcoming purchase. I will miss the torque, but I think for my needs the gas HD's will suit me fine.

Coming from a 19 High Country Duramax, ordering a new 24 gasser with the 6.6 and Allison 10 speed. Makes more sense to me as I daily drive it and only need to tow @6000 lb boat/trailer multiple times a year. I live only @8 miles from work and diesel just doesn't do well on short commuting, went into regen wayyy too often and the extra $$$ for diesel and def just didn't make sense. I agree there's huge advantages to diesel but there's drawbacks too...there's an ass for every seat they say.

Diesel here in California is almost 2$ more a gallon than gas. Gas HDs used to have quite a bit less towing capability, but a gas 3500 can literally tow anything I would need. Personally im in the market for a HD truck and being that ill only use this truck on the weekends for around town trips and eventually towing a toy hauler every now and then, I just don't have a need to pay the entry fee and maintenance fees of the diesel when all I need is the gas. For reference, I was looking into a Tundra and the hybrid model which has more torque, on a mid level trim is like 68-72k. I can buy a gas 3500 LTZ or high country for not much more than that price. This is why its appealing to some maybe, but not all.

i agree diesel trucks are better for towing and long distance travel especially while towing but for the average person who drives back and forth to work and just wants a truck to haul stuff in the bed and to just haul a four wheeler or a side by side then a gas hd is the perfect truck, my dad has had a diesel truck for his past 2 or 3 trucks and he is switching to gas, diesel trucks also need time to warm up and if you dont allow that then you actually are doing harm to the motor its self which is why i bought a gas cause i drive maybe 5 minutes to work

As someone who has owned a gas and a diesel I prefer the diesel over the gas every time. Gas is fine if you’re on a farm or haul short distances but in my opinion if you’re towing long distances then a diesel is the go to.

I sold 2 HD gassers and received a good amount....my 2023 High country gasser valued around 5k difference to a diesel a few months ago....thinking about trading it in on 24 model as I also get tax benefits....the price fluctuates week to to week but last offer was for 56-57k, truck was 73k MSRP so yeah the good ol days during covid are gone and I knew it wouldnt last.... while the trade ins have gone down the selling price of new has also come down so it probably works out the same.....negotiating is such a huge part of car purchasing....it has to make sense overall and if it doesnt I just keep my truck....its a want not a need so bit easier coming from that prospective....I think their is definetly a market for HD gasser trucks as for one the costs are so expensive and the amount of people who actually "need" a diesel or want to deal with the emissions has changed last few years.... see more HD trucks than ever before....people can afford lil nicer trim with gas as well.....the top tier guys who pull heavy and are financially well off will always buy diesels, that wont change.....its the tiers below them who need payload more than towing and fact these truck drive so well for what they are.......sure it changes depending on location, I am far west in the southern region

Agreed. $10K more. Diesel fuel is more money. My trailer is 6000 lbs. The 2500 HD 6.6L gas has no Start Stop or AFM trash like the 1500 Silverado. You can buy gasoline anywhere. DONT FORGET the Diesel WEIGHS 700 lbs more. I do some light moderate off-road and the extra 700 lbs matters.

Nice video. There’s several different reasons for the gas HD hate and you definitely mentioned one of them. People are living in the past or basing their opinions off of other people’s (like their Dad or Grandfather) past experiences. Modern gas HDs have really changed the game. You got old school Big Block gas power with double the fuel mileage essentially. It is truly remarkable. Anyways, there’s haters on both sides. The dumbest thing I hear is the gas guys couldn’t afford the diesel, so that means poor guys buy the gas HDs. Poor people are not buying new trucks, I’m sorry. As for your friend in Maryland, I would say the sales mix is regional. Here in East Kentucky there’s just as many gas HDs on any given lot as they are diesels, especially for Chevrolet. GMC is more diesel than gas and the Ram store is more diesel than gas. The Ford store never has an HD lol.

I had a 2020 Duramax for about 14,000 miles. And I now have a 2022 6.6 gas L8T with nearly 36,000 miles and the fuel mileage difference is 2 mpg, towing or otherwise.

My experience as well. Mileage between my 6.6 gas and LML is about 2-2.5 mpg average. Given the cost of diesel vs gas it’s more economical to drive the gas. Unless you are towing extremely heavy then it might be 4-5 mpg less than diesel. @@matthewanderson9912

For non towing a gas HD and a diesel HD after 1000 miles you spend $170 for gas and $185 for diesel. That's close to 10% less fuel cost. Hauling is the only thing that the diesel is better at , so you have to constantly tow to make the diesel better.

I pull heavy only 3-5 times per year. I have a 30ft gooseneck that carries a jeep and a couple 4-wheelers. Longest drive is about 300 miles. My Ram 6.4L makes perfect sense for my needs. I doubt ill never buy a diesel just because of all the emissions crap they put on them now.

For me, gas is the better option, I tow work trailers & have the bed loaded all the time, but mostly short distances, no need for a over technoligized, over emissioned diesel. If I were going long distance constantly, then might do a diesel. Have a 23 f350 7.3 4:30 gears, that thing pulls just fine for what I do

We should all get what we each want and who cares what anyone thinks. Diesels work better for me and my business. Others may not want or need one. So be it. I wouldn’t push a person to consider one over another. If it’s what you want and you can afford it (no matter what it is…. Truck, house, boat, wife……) then it’s a good deal and you should get it.

I’m looking at a L8T HD either Chevy or GMC as I need more truck. A diesel wouldn’t be beneficial as I do a lot of stop start being a landscaper. With the new DEF systems I don’t think that a diesel would run long enough or hot enough to not burn off particulates. Resulting in a higher chance of failure with the diesel.

I ordered a gas 2500, I live in a small town, I drive less than 100 miles a month, don’t own an rv and tow a wakeboard boat. But the few times I’ve needed to haul heavier loads with my 1500 5.3 it’s been fine but the truck is slammed and I feel payload I’m under gunned. I figure the 2500 will give me plenty of towing and payload with less maintenance. And people are just negative and grumpy these days. I wanted diesel but realized I didn’t need it so went gas.

Had a diesel sprinter but if you don't use diesels every day they dont run well. Traded for power wagon and we know payload the weak spot but great driving HD. DEF is a dirty job.

Resale of Gas vs Diesel HD trucks is well known. I don’t think it’s only a dealer/salesperson issue. It’s all the way up and down the industry. Wholesale, NASA, forums and Facebook groups, etc. 👍

JB, really appreciate your perspective and your content, especially on the AT4X HD. For perspective, my current truck is a 2024 AT4 3500 Diesel, why, we tow long distance, my TT is heavy, so for my use case the Diesel is the best choice. So now, looking at the AT4X HD in particular, I test drove a diesel AT4x last week, and I must say, its awesome and probably one of the best all around trucks I have ever driven. It does not work for me because of payload etc., but dang, sweet truck. But I started thinking, what if it were a gas truck. That fully loaded awesome offroad/tow pig/ great everyday driver, would be $84k. What does a fully loaded power wagon cost? In gas, the AT4X would satisfy 90% of the users. But sadly, the buyers for these are probably the ones that don't worry about cost and want every option box checked and even more sad, the resale would offset the initial value proposition. Keep up the good work.

It sneaks in as a gasser too. Other than High country the big three have made diesel standard in the highest trims. The AT4X gets you Denali Ultimate interior with a gas engine.

As an Off-road off-grid type....truck camper pulling a boat...I see diesel as completely useless. When not at remote fishing destinations... I'm hunting and plowing snow. For the extra $$$$...extra weight... limited remote fuel access...I cannot see buying a diesel. Am I wrong or missing something?

I would think that stigma would change because of the epa regulations on diesels. I would love a new diesel but I don’t tow enough to even own another diesel. Plus the maintenance cost. I love my 05 Cummins doesn’t tow as much as the new ones but I don’t even tow that heavy. My next HD will be gas just because I wouldn’t use the new diesel as it is intended to be used for. I would probably start having problem with emissions stuff. Adrian

The reason why I want by a gasoline-powered engine because the new ones are direct injection and gasoline-powered engines are not really designed for direct injection because the injectors on gasoline direct injection (GDI) only spray the back of the intake valves whereas diesel injectors are much larger injectors and have wider spray patterns and spray both the front of the intake valves and the rear of the intake valves. Unless you have a dual injection system where it is both a GDI and a PFI it is junk because you will be doing induction service on a GDI every three years and you will need to run Berrymans fuel system cleaner/Lucas Oil fuel system cleaner every three months or once a quarter. 🙂

I think its a price vs value on what a buyer is looking for. Im closing on a Silverado 2500 LT Z71 eith the diesel, fully loaded for $68k. Its all the "ohlala" of yhe high end diesels, without the extra cost. Do i need ALL that power of a diesel? No. But im meticulous with maintenance and travel long distances a lot during the cmaping season. So hopefully, my truck will be around for a long time.

Modern diesel will leave you stranded. I wouldn't touch a modern diesel i rather pull the load a little slower but at least get there. Never again will i stress over a diesel or be stranded missing work for all the issues. Even if you got a warranty the warranty dont help you missing work or your vacation you planned all year when your trucks in the shop. A truck in the shop not working is costing you much more than the parts and labor.

Had a 2004 Ram 2500 Gasser HD and a 2013 Ram 3500 Diesel HD. Had way more problems with the mexico built 2013 than the missouri built 2004. Way cheaper to maintain the gasser. But obviously less capable

I'm mixed on this!!! Gas for shorter trips for sure hands down, Everyone mentions the added $10k price on the diesel this isn't really a deal breaker as your not losing that additional $10k when you sell it right?? its just an extra up front cost, so for me that has nothing to do with which one I would pick. Currently gas is $4.19 (costco) and Diesel is $4.39 this is CA (8-30-24) so now there's only a .20c difference I know this fluctuates but at this price driving 15k miles I did gas at 8mpg and Diesel at 12mpg. The savings per year with diesel is $2368. over 5 years its $11,800 savings!!!! so lets tighten the mpg up a bit and lets say the Difference is only 2mpg better for the Diesel vs 4mpg above savings is now only $797 a year @ 15k miles so in 5 years its $3985. factor in the price difference in fuels as that changes all the time its hard to decide which one is actually beneficial on fuel savings alone throw in the extra maintenance on a diesel etc. I'm buying new so warranty will cover all my issues I feel if something happens, so for me I think the fuel savings alone currently makes it a pretty good deal, Im probably going diesel!!! What if you get 5 mpg or 6 mpg better than gas huge savings at the prices above. Tough choices for sure. oh forgot to subtract the DEF cost at like what $150 bucks lets call it $200 to be safe. Still a decent savings. Just curious, do you guys think its a 4mpg difference?? or more or less vs the gasser. From what I can tell 4 mpg+ for the Diesel seems to be a fair estimate.

I went from a dodge cummins to a 2024 chevy 3500 gas this is my first gas powered truck i owned all dodge diesel still have and older one. I will never buy another diesel truck because of the emissions. If u tow over 18000lbs daily buy a diesel.

I know a lot of guys with diesel trucks and almost all of them say they would never buy another one if it was 2007 or newer. If they had to buy a newer one it would be 2018 or older as the newer diesel’s are trash and gas is far better as most trucks never tow more 5% of the life of the truck and gas trucks can handle more daily abuse with short drives and are very powerful now unlike before. Most just buy diesel’s now because everyone else is buying them but have no need for a diesel. I have never wanted a diesel nor will I ever buy one UNLESS I was towing 50% to 75% of the time with the truck. In most cases gas HD does just fine.

I am in the market for a new truck. I have never owned a GMC but Ford did me dirty one too many times. I am focused on the 3500 HD Crew Cab short bed AT4. (I don’t see any reason to drop to a 2500 and add $11k to get an AT4X). I am hung up on gas vs diesel. I do. It tow, but I have not kept a car longer than 2 years and while I want to say I plan to keep it, you never know - but these increasing prices are going to make frequent swaps a thing if the past (at least for me). Sorry for rambling. Anyway, if I do. It tow, but do commute 45-80 minutes each way to work, is diesel going to be worth it? Am I better off rehearing the 6.6 gas to 4.10 or 4.56 and reprogramming? The transmission should be better able to keep me rolling at decent rpms on the highway. Thoughts?

I agree that gas engines make more economic sense in a. I f you plan on trading in a few years the gas truck will be hammered because people dont understand that diesels dont have the longevity they once had. The emmision system and injectors on a diesel which are both super expensive. Added up those two things. alone can cost as much as a new gas engine. Part of the problem too is that people overpay for fluffy trucks. That 40000 dollars in options is a BAD INVESTMENT.

In my experience, I own roughly 15 gas and diesel trucks, the diesel motors last longer and with the price of theses trucks today you want something that is going to last 3 or 400k miles.

If you tow like every day or travel the country with an RV full-time I would go with the diesel even though I hate the emission on the truck and it can get pretty expensive having to deal with it I mean thousands of dollars. Now if you are someone who takes his RV out 5-6 times a year driving in that 250-500 mile range then I would go with the gas engine and that is the route I took PS I hate modern-day diesel.
