Anyone making the consideration isn’t going to be worried about that minor detail. The major concerns are the diesel reliability or lack there of the SCR systems that constantly fail and the 50 miles to derate,That you get once there’s an issue you’ve got 50 miles and you are done you are not towing a trailer anymore you have to get to a dealer within those 15 miles and chances are they’re not gonna be open and they’re not gonna have time to work on your rig right away. Add to that the insanely high cost to repair and maintain them the fact that the diesel engine warranty is useless for the fuel system since most customers end up paying out-of-pocket even on new trucks because of poor quality fuel then you have to go after the station that sold the fuel to you try to get them for $15,000 good luck with that it’s just a nightmare and no one needs. The biggest thing is these diesel trucks are not meant to be daily driven back-and-forth to work with no load they’re meant to be loaded and run for hours on end not a twenty minute to forty minute commute empty that doesn’t do the jobIt’s just a matter of time before your emission system and egr system plugs up. I work on diesel trucks every day I maintain a fleet of them for a highway department most of ours are much larger 9 L Cummins and max force I wish we had a viable gasoline option they just don’t produce the torque in the truck that weighs 30 to 50,000 pounds and is pushing snow uphill. Our trucks are constantly giving us issues with the emission system it is not designed for our application either but there’s nothing we can do about it.

After hauling RVs for years, with both gassers and diesels, I wouldn't get another gasser. The relative lack of torque is the real difference for me. Getting up the Ike Gauntlet in eight minutes is interesting, but what about the other eight hours of your day? In my experience, cruising down the highway is much better in a diesel, hands down. The gassers do okay when conditions are just right, but fall flat when they aren't. For example, my son towed a 23' 5k TT from Hays, KS to the Denver area with a '17 F250/6.2l. He was going into a 20-25mph headwind the whole day with the cruise set at 70. The truck was mostly sitting at 4500PRMs (which probably isn't great) and he was never passing a gas station because he was getting 5.5MPG. I'm sure that the 7.3 is better, but I'm not convinced that it would do any better in the same situation with a 12k 5th wheel.
@krisbeaver29012 жыл бұрын
"relative lack of torque" That right there is why I wouldn't buy any of the 6+L offerings out there, they are just straight GUTLESS. As for the 7.3L.. hmm.. more HP AND Torque than a first or second gen Cummins Turbo Diesel.. say what?!?!?! Yup! I know a lot of guys are diesel heads.. and if your towing for a living, absolutely they make sense. The loaded MPG pays off the engine upcharge quickly and then moderates your DEF and maintenance. And for a living, I mean like a hot shot driver, putting 80k+ on his truck towing per year. But.. the average person isn't doing that. If you crunch the numbers, towing under 500 miles per month, JUST including fuel costs, not def, maintenance, or repairs, that Diesel $10k is going to take about 285,000 miles before you break even on a gasser. Add in def costs and higher maintenance and insurance premiums, and that number quickly goes over 400,000 miles. And that TOTAL Miles, not just towing, to be clear. And ALL of those numbers vanish the instant your CP4 grenades your fuel rails. For an every day driver that tows on weekends or even once or twice from farm to barn weekly, the 7.3L is a better option. And, just an FYI.. I can buy THREE 7.3L's, and have them installed for me, for the initial diesel upfront costs.

The people that try to believe the "Gas will take over Diesel argument" simply dont understand the key difference between a Diesel engine vs a Gas engine. Diesel makes its power (Torque) from a long rod stroke to make very high cylinder compression in order to ignite the slow burning Diesel that burns longer providing a longer amount of time pushing the piston down (making power) which compliments the long rod stroke. Gas ignites from a spark, not from compression like diesel, and so it burns very fast, so shorter rod strokes provide faster revving engines to make power faster(Horsepower), but not more working power(torque). Now imagine you had to roll over a large diameter and heavy log, and you had two log peavey poles to choose from to roll that log, one is 30 inches long, the other one is 60 inches long. Anybody that understands basic mechanical advantage with leverage, would pick the 60 inch pole because it gives more torque to the user to roll the log. Now picture the log representing a truck axle, you would want to choose the tool(Machine) that would create more torque which would be a diesel engine. Anybody that believes gas engines will overtake diesels, quite simply has no clue about how an engine makes usuable power (Torque) and how a diesel engine makes it vs a gas engine.

Awesome review JB.. I'm glad you're impressed with the 7.3! One thing, you don't get the "engine brake".. instead it's a Transmission Brake. If you want to engage it, you give the brake a quick light tap, and it'll drop you 2-5 gears, you'll rev up and immediately slow down. Takes a bit to get used to it from a diesel braking.

Just FYI; I've towed an RV for 40+ years. Numerous trucks and engine / gearing combinations. I ordered my 21' F350 with the 7.3L gas, 3:73 rear. Did not need or want a diesel. The 7.3 tows as good or better than the diesels did a few years back. Most of my towing is in the hills & mountains of the PNW. We did do a snowbird trip to AZ. In~4k miles I averaged 10.3mpg. Don't remember ever putting my foot to the floor; rarely more than 1/2 way. Around here ~9.7 - 10 mpg (towing). I do run at 62-64mph most of the time. Did 70+ for a bit, but much more relaxed drive a bit slower. Friend with a Duramax and like trailer averaged ~1.5 mpg better. His fuel cost ~$1 - $1.25 more per gal + DEF. He paid an extra $9k for the option above the 7.3 as well. Yes he has more tq going up the long hills, but I had no issues keeping up. Same going down hill. rarely use my brakes as the tranny does the work. If you want or need a diesel; then get one. But I do not want or need it and get along just fine.

I have bulletproofed my '04 F350 Lariat, Crew Cab, Dually, 8' bed, 6,0 Powerstroke, 4x2, 5spd Automatic, Towing package so no reliability issues. No ridiculous DPF system either! I pulled a 44' Pace Phantom racecar hauler with a '97 Honda Prelude and a 3bdrm house of furnishings, about 17,000lbs according to the scales, from Texas to Washington state. Flat, up grades, down grades through Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington and cruise control set to the speed limit. It never gave a hiccup and got an average of 18mpg! This rig returns 21-22mpg unloaded. Other than the outrageous prices of diesel fuel in the last two years, it's the cheapest to drive rig I have. My '98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 only averages 14.5mpg...on Premium fuel only. I have over 240,000 miles on my diesel and still going strong. I'm interested to see if that 7.3 will make it 240,000 miles without issues. Interesting and probably fine for the occasional tow but for regular, long distance tows through mountains, it can't hang with a diesel. Looking forward to a longterm test.

You showed a trans temp of 195, I think. Not everyone may know this but the trans temp on the Ford 10 speed will average around 200 degrees on normal days (maybe a little higher on hot days), and this is by design coupled with newer formulated fluids. In fact, I believe the trans is built to take mechanical advantage of both “heating” and “cooling” processes to maintain that temp. Most people are used to seeing much less temps and many have taken their 10 speeds in for service assuming they were always overheating. Older fluids would completely break down at constant 200 degrees.

Diesel has been more expensive for 2 years. Prior to that, it was cheaper the last 20. Things may change. I absolutely have nothing negative to say about this truck and engine. I traded a 2016 F250 6.2 King Ranch in on this truck, which towed good but needed a little more power and better fuel mileage. A diesel was out of the question because it is economically a bad decision considering the option cost and expensive maintenance plus 40-50% added fuel cost plus you have to remove the cab to do a basic repair. This truck gets around 16mpg at 80 mph non towing and 9.5 to 10.5 towing a 25RES Cougar fifth wheel. Towing you do not know the trailer is attached and acceleration when passing is very much like the V10 that I had in the same configuration in 2008. Hopefully Ford will increase the horsepower and torque by supercharging or turbocharging and make it available in a F450, which in that configuration would be absolute diesel killer.

Anyone who reach for the carpet anytime towing is not at all concerned with wether it’s a coal burner under the hood or gasser. Fuel economy and power is what towing is all about. Those that buy coal burners are generally in it for the long haul. Gas jobs don’t have the stamina. You just said it in your video. “ all they have to do is make these more efficient “. @@gregormaitland5065 Haven't had the truck long, and haven't made any long trips towing but : Towing 10K boat around town in/out of boat ramps 6-8 mpg. Driving unloaded, 10.5 mpg around town, and 15.5 mpg highway if I keep it under 70mph. RPM right at 2K. All at sea level. Truck is a SuperCab. Will be towing boats from SC to FL soon as the weather warms up which will give me a better idea of what to expect. Glad I ordered the 4:30 gear, but don't have anything to compare it to.

I have a 22 F-350 dually with 7.3 and 4.30 towing 16,500lb 41ft fifth wheel. On average I get 6.8 to 7.5 mpg’s towing between 65-75mph. I love the truck and have taken it through the Appalachian mountains on the 6-8% grades and it did great!

I have a fully loaded 2022 F-350 Lariat 4x4 with the 3.73 as well with the 7.3L. My payload is exactly 3,700 lbs. according to the door sticker. I have towed with it really only once with our 8K travel trailer and love it. I was curious how this would do with a 5th wheel this size and the truck not having the 4.30 gears. Thanks for sharing!

I love these video. Do one with a F350 tremor for me in the future

No doubt that gas engine is sufficient but the diesel is better for towing. I've done both and not close. Just my opinion

My old 03 Cummins with 34’ Toyhauler with rail/quad got 14MPG to the dunes!

My 7.3 gas engine is THE BEST engine I have ever run. It’s got lots of guts. Best V8 ever made for a 1-Ton

I do hope your new Ford is as good to you as all of mine have been to us. Great video!

Nice to get your take on the 7.3. I’d say the diesel will be 20% more efficient. If you only tow once a month this seems like a no brainer. I wonder how used 7.3’s will sell in a couple of years compared to the a diesel?🤔🇺🇸💪

Well, going on 3 model years, good luck finding a 7.3L used. It's why I ordered new, the used ones are unicorns.

When you factor the cost of DEF, and that massive repair bill for the overly complicated diesel engine when it inevitably fails, the 7.3 is superior.

@@matthewm3912 Everything definitely adds up but my Jeep is a diesel and uses 1 jug of def in 5000 miles or so, it’s a PITA but $12 extra dollars in 5000miles is pennies. It has 100k warranty so that’s when it will most likely get traded, no way do I want to pay for a diesel mechanic for a Jeep😂

20% more efficient mpg with 30% more expensive fuel. Math gets upside down quick when Diesel prices are $2 more per gallon.

What mpg are you guys getting daily driving a 7.3?

JB, now that you're living in Utah, you should do a comparison of gas vs diesel towing your fifth wheel up Parleys canyon. I would love to see that. Living in mountain country, diesel is king!

Thanks, I think someone else mentioned it, may have to drive over their at some point 👍🏾

I think previous owners only changed the oil once and then the dealer once, and you still have break-in materual (iron) being shed. I just bought a '21 F250 Tremor 7.3 with 12k miles. Fordpass showed the previous services. Dealer was the 3rd oil change and I put 500 miles on that Motorcraft oil change and used it as a flush. I do my own at 5k with Amsoil Signature series & Amsoil filter. You've convinced me to send in a sample next time out of curiosity. Hope your iron count is down next time!
