I own the 997.1 Turbo tiptronic, when I bought wasn't sure about the gear box, over time got used to it and works great, it is not PDK but functions well, the tiptronic makes the Turbo more a road monster rather than track monster,not to mention that when driving in and out the city love it even more, the heritage of the Porsche Turbo will stand for ever!

To be fair, if you just jump in a car that you do't know. You're never going to be as fast as when you know the car inside and out. Let alone if the car isn't yours and you tend to be responsible with other peoples' stuff. But all things being equal, the GT3 should win that of course.
@DW911S2 жыл бұрын
i agree with this however i do agree with JayEmm to a degree - the 997.1 GT3 was more rounded than the 996 GT3s, but it was a car that would catch you out if you weren't accustomed the the powerband. A colleague had a 997.1 GT3 and I at the time a 997.1 C4S (with a powertrain kit) and my initial reaction on driving it on the road was underwhelming. Then i realised i had another 2400rpm to play with and OH MY GOD what an experience that was. Fantastic cars - if i had the money now I'd be trying to get into a 997.2 GT3 as that was always for me the pinniacle of the 997 range.
@JayEmmOnCars2 жыл бұрын
A GT3 is very good *on the right track*, like I mentioned I took it out at Blyton Park which seemed almost custom made to have a 997 in the wrong gear at every corner
@markpissed_on_petrol15662 жыл бұрын
Dave Ive owned both 996 and 997 GT3s and Turbos, and I think the GT3s are infinitely more special than the turbos on road and track. I think if all you want is straight-line performance, or point-to-point pace on the road then the turbo will provide you with that, in a much more accessible platform. But the GT3 feels so much more hardcore and demands more respect from its driver, and if you give it the respect it demands it can take you to a place that the turbo could only dream of in terms of driver feedback and thrills. With the GT3 you get out of it what you put into it, which to me is way more satisfying than just point and squirt. Plus we cant ignore the noise! The turbos sound like washing machines next to their GT3 siblings
@DW911S2 жыл бұрын
@Mark pissed_on_petrol I'm with you on that - GT3 over a turbo any day of the week. Out of interest, how would you rank the 996 GT3 vs 997 GT3? Only driven a 997 GT3 but everyone rants and raves about the 996 being much more visceral.
@niallodriscoll33992 жыл бұрын
The 997 turbo is one of my all time favourite porches for many reasons, but for one in particular (this will sound fickle) is the wheels. In this instance the alloys make the machine (aesthetically speaking). I seem to find this with a lot of car manufacturers, where certain makes and models have impeccably designed wheels and this beast is no different.

When my wife and I were young we always had manual cars, apart from when we lived in the USA, when a 3 speed auto was our only vehicle. However, in 1997 we returned from living in Switzerland and we were shocked with the state of the roads and traffic in the UK. Things have just got worse. Gradually our cars were replaced with autos. The current family car is a BMW 5 series touring auto. The forth auto touring we have owned since 1997. When it's about 8 years old or it reaches about 80,000 miles it will be replaced with another auto. However, the 997 turbo tip has now done 84,000 miles over 16 years and it won't be replaced. I know it's not a manual or a fast PDK box but I have no desire to replace it with a larger, slightly faster 992 Turbo. If my wife and I need to travel fast, in any weather, over a long distance it is still the car of choice. Just put it down to our age.

@jimsteinway6952 жыл бұрын
The tiptronic is the worst transmission that Porsche ever made. What ever you do AT LEAST get a PDK car. A 997.2 pdk 911S is faster than a 997.1 turbo tiptronic. Slightly faster 992 turbo? You’re talking 0-60 for a 997.1 turbo more than 4.7 seconds. A 992 Turbo is in the 2.5 range. It’s twice as fast as the 997 tip. ANY tiptronic 911 is slow
@tloc10432 жыл бұрын
@@jimsteinway695 Interesting comments but can I just make a few extra points. Firstly, the tiptronic box is a Mercedes unit capable of taking very high power loads and is very strong. Secondly, in standard form the 997 turbo tip 0-60mph time was officially from Porsche 3.7 sec, 0.2 seconds faster than a manual , and quite fast enough for the UK roads. Other tests found those figures conservative. Finally if you want to, the Mezger engine combined with the tip box, can be tuned to power outputs way in excess of that found in the 992 turbo S at a much lower price than buying a 992 turbo. A friend in Switzerland has his tuned to 1400 bhp and the tip box can handle that kind of power. 0-60 in the low 2 seconds and a top speed well in excess of 200mph. I am sure you could modify a manual or PDK box to take that kind of output but would it have any effect on outright performance times or speeds? My point is each individual has their own driving preferences and for me having driven both a manual and PDK turbo the tip version fully meets my driving style for current UK roads.

I love my 996 C4S, to the point that I'm spending £5k on it this week for suspension replacement, I suspect I'll love it even more after. I mulled over a turbo the sheer pace of it makes it a consideration, the lack of sound was an issue, but I also wanted to sample a proper N/A 911 before the downsized turbo lumps came in and then electrification. I have no regrets.

Great review of an icon in 911s'. For a while I've been contemplating buying a car to keep in Europe for fun drives and also long distance travel. I'd thought about a 575M or a 599 but this is also a contender. I'd considered a Porsche Cayman 918GTS, but I just didn't think about a turbo. Now I will. A lot cheaper it seems to both own and run than a Fezza and with a bit more space for baggage. Enough grunt for mountain passes and safe with the 4S. Less depreciation too. Food for thought, thanks.

Despite being a 2009 model with a Tiptronic gearbox, I could never have imagined how it could stand the test of time - it is really fast, size is perfect, handling superb, having the legendary Mezger engine and most importantly, the drive was MORE raw and involving. This brought back the fun of driving to another level! The only downside is the sound which was a bit underwhelming.

I have a 997.1 turbo in black with MT exactly like the one reviewed in the video. I am in South Africa and paid £48,000 for it. It is an awesome car! I also have a 996 C4S. I think the only downside of the 997.1 turbo is the sound. It’s doesn’t have the drama of the 996 C4S. Absolutely brutal acceleration though and it’s a brilliant long distance GT car. It’s much easier to drive than the 996 and if you drive then back to back the 997.1 is more civilised. Interior is much better than the 996. As a daily driver the 997 is hands down the better car. For Sunday fun the 996 C4S I think is great. If I decide to keep the Tubro long term I will modify the exhaust and get a better sound out of it and make it Sunday drivers car. Nice video and I agree with your thoughts! I think if I was to go with a GT product I would go with the original 996 mk1 GT3. That’s a special car IMO. My dad had a 997 Turbo S, ferocious fast but since has changed to a 991 GT3 RS. The Turbo S is the far more useable car on the road, as the GT3 RS passenger seating position is horrendous and firmness in suspension means long journeys become a chore. Two years ago I "settled" on a 997.2 Carrera S manual with a nice specification including full leather interior with contrast stitching and some other nice options. I thought I would try the 997.2 CS and then see if I wanted to "upgrade" to a 997.1 Turbo (though it would be a PCM downgrade). Living in Colorado, the difference in power between the forced induction Turbo and the NA Carrera is amplified a lot. Well since then the prices of 997.1 Turbos have gone sky high, so that dream is over for a while at least. Good Luck finding one at a reasonable price now. I am talking doubled from $65k to $70k (US) for about 40k miles to well over $100k-$120k now. My 997.2 has gone up in value as well, but not near as much to keep up with the Turbo. Maybe sanity will return one day.

In yours, you can still hear engine noises that are too muffled in the Turbo. The launch into hyperspace can easily overdraw your attention over the 911’s other virtues. Go spend your spare $ on tires, touring and track time where you can go over the handling limit and not wreck anything.

It's ridiculous how underrated the Turbo is nowadays. Back in the day it was the flagship, the car Porsche would promote... Carrera RS was rare and GT3 was only beginning. I guess it never recovered from the GT-R thing, especially when Porsche found out downforce and semislicks helped more at the Nurburgring than speed.

I started in a 993 TT since then I’ve only had GT3s 996, 997 and now a 991.2 GT3. While I would like to order a 992 turbo eventually the depreciation bug hits the turbo while the GT3 seems to be untouched

I've had my 997 turbo for 6 years as a daily driver . Still can't get around changing it. I think my next move will be a 991 Carrera 4 GTS, why, because I don't think anything in the 991 range has the same experience as the 997 turbo. It has it all tbh..

Jay, you not considered a Cayster GTS to satisfy your 6 cylinder requirement? I've recently bought a 981GTS and the engine is absolutely glorious. Glorious to the point it's actually put me off buying any 911 older than a 991.2, as I think, well what's the point? Similar engine in much thirstier config, in a much heavier car...

Boxster 981 certainly appeals, as to be honest does 987!

@@JayEmmOnCars Agreed 100%. That'd what I started out looking at. However, with access to far fewer cars, I just wanted something a little more modern and a little more aesthetically to my tastes, but everything else was awesome.

Grrrrr. I was looking at these this morning. Now I want one even more.

The key takeaway was the 981 S or more specifically 981 Spyder that left the 997 GT3 for dead on the track. My 981 S will destroy my C2S but my Boss 302 Laguna Seca is in a league of it own compared to either. It guess it really depends on how much of an experience you want when you drive.

I sold my GT Silver Turbo manual a few years ago because i really wanted a aircooled 911 again, so i bought a 964 Anniversary in Polar silver. I wasnt a big fan of the gearbox in my turbo, felt it was a bit notchy. the seats on this turbo look better than my regular turbo seats.I have yet to try a 997 GT3 3,8, my last GT3 experience was my 996 gt3 cs 1st gen. An amazing car , my only experience with a 991 is as a passenger in my friends convertible carrera.. so underwelming i declined when asked if i wanted to drive it.

I often agree with you Jay and I hear what ya saying but I’d definitely take any GT3 any day of the week over any turbo 911 or even a CS

I have a 991.2 GTS Cabrio. My first Porsche was a 996 C2 Cabrio. I also had a 718 4 cylinder boxster (always forget if it's a 982). Mixed in there were 2 Ferraris, a 360 and F430 both spiders. I miss the driving experience of the Ferraris but mine were maintenance nightmares. Unfortunately I can only have one of these things at a time (1st world problem). My wife points out that I drive the GTS considerably more than any of the other sports cars I've had. But I still pine for my F430 until I remember the nearly constant flow of money it needed. Still trying to find that perfect car with Ferrari experience and Porsche preciseness and reliability.

Do you like the 991 chassis better than the 718?? Have you tried a 718 4 liter?
@daveyator Жыл бұрын
@@getdealtwithquick Thats a hard choice. I have to say I might lean toward the 718 from a pure handling standpoint. But the basic reason I got the 911 was more power. I've never driven the 4 liter.

@@daveyator The turbo charged Carreras are wicked fast. I drove a base Carrera 992 back to back with a GT4 for a week and the former out-accelerates the latter noticeably (torque). That said, the 992 truly is a GT car and I would only own one if I'd be doing big miles on German Autobahns, regularly. I found the size of the 718 just right for a sports car and the 4L exciting enough, it just needs an exhaust. It won't get you the F430s V8 spectacle but I personally would struggle with all the unwanted attention tbh. Almost certain the Boxter in non Spyder guise is my ideal toy but I'm looking 997s or 991s because I have 2 little kids and little opportunity to driven an open 2 seater at this point. It'd just sit too much.

The question is this (997.1 manual), a 997.2 turbo manual or a 997.2 turbo s (which are pdk only) The first has the Mezger engine with it's motorsport heritage and durability (especialy for tuning) The second has a more ordinary engine but it's more modern and sharper (they didn't want to be slower than the new gtr anymore) And the third one is pdk only which is still a very fast gearbox (not the greatest anymore but still) and you can do the handbreak trick and turn it into a rwd car, so you have kind of a budget gt2 without the manual.

i also agree ,my back are not enough good to the gt3 and the 997 turbo allthough some contested the car when it came out ,it grew up on porshe enthusiasts , i also trashed the new model at the time and the last i bought was a carrera4 ,only paid 7.000€ from a woman that spent a fortune in restoring it after driving it for more than 10 years in the desert of Egipt ,she said that it wasn´t bad as the 4x4 vehicules of those years ,this refering to the 10 years work she had in Egypt and driving off road everyday , i drove it when she returned and ended up keeping it when she told she was going to buy other more confortable

Idk, I'd rather have a 997 gt3 or an rs, sure the turbo will be faster and also cheaper, but the gt3 would just be more fun and enjoyable, and it's also more of a driver's car to begin with since it's only optioned with a manual, no automatic was available for the 996 or 997 gt3 gens. But for the price, a 991 gt3 is actually the best option, they're around 140k with 30kish miles

997.1 GT3 and Turbo prices are similar from what I've seen. RS prices are through the roof! That being said, if it were a 997.2, I take the GT3. For 997.1 --> Turbo.

Did you do a video on the different GT versions and which to buy vs which over priced? I was interested in understanding 991.1 GT3 vs 997 version and what quantities they made the different version in … are there any you think you could own for a few years and not get decimated by depreciation (obviously no crystal ball!)

I had one. Once you get over how fast they are (very, very) you'll get bored. It feels like driving an extremely quick Golf. I swapped it out for a Maserati Granturismo after 2 years ownership. By every objective measure a much worse car, but I kept it for 7 years.
