Last car my dad owned before passing was a pristine low miles '98 sapphire blue on creme leather XJ8. Back in 2000 he let me drive it that time I wanted to impress my girlfriend out at the movies. Incredible ride, so luxurious, comfortable, and fast! Even the non supercharged model pulled 300hp. Memorable night, thanks dad.

Oh, my... This type of Jaguar is one that I could easily see myself getting into if I were a discerning English (or Commonwealth) gentleman. Its walnut trim, leather interior, and that sumptuous XK series inline 6 engine would be enough to persuade me to have a cruise anywhere. So long as it would not become overly plumby with the problems, I would be as pleased as punch with this *lovely* automobile.

I've owned three of these babies over the years and Scotty's mention of the problematic plastic timing gear is accurate. It's about an $1800 job to replace the plastic components with metal. (Replace the plastic water pump with metal while you're at it.) Aftermarket supercharger pulley wheels will get you an immediate 30 hp bump with no additional tuning required. But don't do burnouts or you'll blow out the rear end. The car's torque makes it exquisitely drivable and its Bilstein shocks and control arm suspension make it a comfortable high-speed tourer capable of managing fast sweepers. At around the 100k mark you'll need the transmission thoroughly cleaned out. If it isn't, accumulated metal dust could gum up the works and cause it to fail. My last XJR, a 2001, was ultra reliable and going strong with 156k miles on the clock when I sold it last year for $5,500. You can get one of these dirt cheap but don't do it unless you can maintain it yourself or you have access to an honest, Jaguar-specialist shop for maintenance. (The dealer service shops are too expensive.) This model was the high point, style- and performance-wise, of the classic XJ series and as such was the equal of any of its German counterparts along with having one thing they didn't: sex appeal.

My friends think i'm mad but i love these cars. Just can't take to the new Jags. Great car, and still pretty fast by today's standards. I blow the doors off of a lot of newer cars today, of those not expecting for an older 4 door Jag to have a 4.2 liter 'Supercharged' engine. I upgraded the pulley, air intake system (i.e., filter and pipe) which gave it an extra 25-30 HP. So, it's over 400HP now. I do think that 70K was a tad steep for the car, back then. But, if you're looking for performance, class, and style, it's the answer.

I have always absolutely loved Jaguars but the negative outweighed the plus. I often wonder was I being short sighted somehow because I have a friend who also loved them and made them a part of his life by making them an actual business investment and claiming them a success. At any rate more power to their enthusiasts. They are absolutely beautiful automobiles and have more style than most German autos IMO.

Buy the post '03 XJR if you want one, all aluminum chassis and body, 4.2 V8 with many improvements and 6 speed ZF transmission. Faster and honestly dependable, do some research if you don't believe. These cars also pull near 30 MPG on freeway driving, the alloy models are also quicker and better handling than you would believe. If you're more after luxury, go for the XJ8 super V8 model.

I got the less exciting boring car, the Jag X type 3.0 L v6 with 231 hp takes 1 more second to get to 60mph, but im assuming it weights less, and if you got a supercharger laying around, im sure it could give this XJ a run for its money, because i only payed $3,000 CAD thats canadian for if you dint know when you take $3,000 CAD into USD is a lot less in USD and the engine only has 89,000 kms they say the engine is the really good reliable engine used in ford mondeos called the Ford Duratec V6, while Ford's V6 engine only makes due with 128 - 167 hp this V6 engine has been beefed up by Jaguar adding DAMB Tappets and VVT. Almost bought one recently, sold before I could go look at it. Jaguars are really underrated performance cars though. I have a 2010 XF Supercharged. It's rated at 470hp from the factory, but it has more than that. At the drag strip she does consistent 12.5's, with a best time of 12.46. I'm faster than 5.0 Mustangs and SS Camaros, and a tenth slower than a 2018 Corvette Grand Sport. I'm looking to tune in the future and should break 11's. And with as much as they depreciate, you can get them for cheap. Keep up on maintenance and they are great cars.

They came in two wheelbases, the short one had no rear leg room, the long one was awesome, huge rear seat, foot-rests, had those wooden fold down picnic tables and dead sheep carpeting. As for being a long/big car, these are pretty small by American standards. I was very serious about buying this 2004 XJR w/ 110,000 mil for 4,000$ as my first car. But after research informed me how expensive replacement parts were and how poor the aftermarket support was for the car I ended up canceling the deal. I also found that they aren't exactly the most reliable cars in the world (prone to Air suspension problems). I just didn't want to stress risking my hard earned money on something as Insecuring as an XJR AKA an old people car by youngsters. I'd rather just keep saving for a mach 1 mustang or a c4 Corvette at least if I ever sell people know the mustang and vette name far more than the XJR. Its overall a better investment, cheaper parts, better resale, easier to work on and come on who doesn't want a full flegid stick v8.

I owned a 1999 and by boring and sleeved the engine and put a smaller pulley on the supercharger it was pushing 400 + factory ecu and fuel pump. But I traded it for a Pontiac GTP and some cash. But looking back not the best trade or money spent.

We had an 87 VDP when I was a kid. It was only 2 years old at the time. AC quit, 2grand to fix! Horn quit, 2grand (needed a new steering column) When the warranty ran out, the jag found a new home. For a sedan, it was a chick car all the way with it's skinny steering wheel and cramped footwells. Backseat was spacious and if I think real hard, I can still smell the leather. Too bad the 80's were not kind for Jag. Ford helped with some issues. Today I have a 69 E-type. At least I don't need a computer science degree to work on it. The xk straight 6 was in production for over 50years. Very impressive and tough as old boots.

Ah, the "Coventry Cat"! Fantastic car. Real mean look to them, especially in black with the big alloys. They're still really good value in the UK, especially as the new wave of Jaguars have hit the roads. To be honest, with correct maintenance, they're likely to be as reliable as any of the more complicated German rivals. Ok, a Lexus LS is likely to be a less worrying ownership proposition, but there's no soul in the driving experience. An American alternative may be less of a headache due to the fact an engine of equivalent capacity at the time would put out around 115bhp lol, but again, it'd lack the driving experience. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy your Jag for years to come. :)

@Marco Benz you don’t know a thing about US cars if you think they were making 115 hp in the 90’s you dope. Cadillac had a 4.6 n/a V8 back then making 300, and the driving experience was no less than this. Also, nobody in the US “hates” Jaguars.

Your observations about this series are correct. And it's too bad, because the Jaguar brand was already tarnished, unfairly some would say. The ironic part is, if like me you know this series well, you can buy one for peanuts, invest a couple of thousand fixing its few faults, and basically have a luxury sedan for life. It will bite at the heels of the latest AMG and M-series, and at the same time give you comfort and elegance only the British can create. And nobody will know you are just a working guy or gal. But one important point: Have access to an honest, non-dealer Jaguar maintenance shop. The "Euro" car fixers down the block will not know where to begin with this car.

As they age (250k miles etc), I think they are becoming an enthusiasts car. At a high mileage you need to replace a few more things than normal and mechanics give you an inflated Jag price when in truth is not that hard to do the stuff yourself. Rear main seal might be a problem though, as are the valve seals somewhat. Good to know how to weld too!

Wow that's a fail from Jaguar, BMW already recognised the Nikasil issue and had stopped making engines with it by March 1997. Only an issue if the owner used high sulfur (i.e. CHEAP) fuel and fuel quality regulations made it not an issue here in Australia. Making my Nikasil BMW V8 (about to hit 290000km and still getting floored all the time) cheap to buy!
