The recipe to have a reliable one of this: when the transmission breaks throw it in the trash and manual swap it (it’s a bolt on and tune thing), when the turbos go replace them with bigger ones, when the brakes and rotors turn to shit just replace them with a big brake kit and when the suspensions breaks just install coilovers. You’ll spend half as much as you would trying to replace the OEM stuff and you’ll end up with an absolute monster. The 6 speed swap make it an animal. To this day I still miss it.

I remember when it was parked in the garage at night after a long drive the RS6 would heat up the garage to at least 90 degrees just from the heat of the engine block. I had no idea about cars when I was a kid but I remember that and always thought it was super cool.

@Beer_Dad1975 5 жыл бұрын
@@99Lezard99 Exactly, at least everything they have made in the last 20 or so years. IMO it reaches deeper than them not being high quality mechanically though, I believe they very deliberately engineer their cars to have a use-by date, with components specifically engineered to break down after a certain amount of use and time - so after say 5 years or whatever they become irritating to own, making the wealthy first-buyer simply trade it in on a new model. Engineered obsolescence is the term. I do think it's starting to catch up on them now though, more and more people are realising they are paying premium money for something that nobody wants to buy second hand, so they are losing a fortune in depreciation, and starting to consider other options. Even if you are wealthy losing $50,000 in depreciation in just 5 years of ownership doesn't feel smart.

Most of Audi's petrol engines used belts rather than chains regardless of cylinder count. I've worked on many of these engines and they are surprisingly serviceable if you follow the typical strict German procedure. The front of the car is built in a very clever way where you remove the bumper cover which is very easy to do, the you undo a number of screws and swing the entire front end out in one big piece. All the hoses for cooling and wires are on one side where the 'hinge' point is, and the you can pretty much stand inside the front of the car with everything very easily accessible. On my car with a v8 TDI engine (chains not belts) everything is located between the engine and transmission, not a very fun procedure to get access to them compared to these models..

I've always loved this car. Back in the day my parents leased an 04 A6 3.0, and I remember the dealer had an RS6 in stock and were showing it off in the showroom. I remember those hilariously bad cupholders well. At the time, Audi was heavily involved with racing, and while most will remember their Le Mans prototype effort with perhaps the most successful sports car racing car ever built, the R8, they also had a full factory team in what was then known as the SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Prior to the 2003 season, they had used the S4 with the 2.7 turbo engine, but 2003, they stepped it up to the RS6. I was fortunate to see the RS6 run in that class in both 03 and 04 at Laguna Seca. The 03 cars were white and basically retained the stock bodylines, but the 04 cars had much wider fenders and huge tires, which IMO ruined the look of the car a bit. The Audis always had an advantage in the standing starts of those races, too. I remember seeing the RS6s blow past people vividly at the 03. The drivers literally had to plan how they were going to pull around the RWD cars on the starts. They also generally cleaned up if the race was in the rain as the AWD was basically unbeatable. One of the drivers was Randy Pobst, who most probably know better these days from his commentary on how new cars drive on the track.

As a teenager I was obsessed with this car from the moment I first saw it in a Top Gear or Evo magazine. I loved fast Audis and this took things to a whole new level. It's still a very fast car today. Old man still has his 1998 S8 and drives it daily, he'll never sell it. Unlike the RS6 it's a big car designed for a big engine so reliability is pretty good. Superbly comfortable, quick and built like a tank. Beautiful cars those 90s / early 00s Audis PS. The Euro RS6 had much tougher rims than the ones on Doug's car here. They were 5-spoke broadsword things that filled the arches real nicely. Like these: cdn.carbuzz.com/gallery-images/840x560/419000/500/419537.jpg

I loved that car, one of the best I had out of all my cars to date, was a beast in the snow and didn't have a single problem in my 3 years I leased it. It was a long time ago but I definitely remember was interior was different to this car and a little better and more modern looking. That car had some really great seats. Mine was like a purplish blue, gorgeous. Also you missed the coolest feature of these cars, put the key in the lock and turn it to left and hold it and all the windows drop down.

I think you really should do a video on the D2 S8. It's cheap now, but in its day it was a flagship super saloon with a 50-valve V8 and Audi's most complex aluminium space frame. It had so many quirks and details about it from the solar sunroof to the steering wheel shift buttons. It was lighter than the S6 of its day despite being larger and more complex.

My 2003 one was black, pretty sure the battery was under the floor in the boot (trunk for the US). Fabulous performance, very much a Q car. The 5 spoke wheels were nicer and agree about the cast mirrors, two years of pleasure (and impressive fuel bills). Also made a fantastic noise, only thing I can imagine would be nicer (if possibly less reliable) would be a V8 Vantage..

This car really brings me back. My parents had an '03 A6 2.7T and it was (mostly) an awesome car. The rounded style was absolutely beautiful back in the day (I still really like it), especially the rear without the spoiler. The interior had a clean, utilitarian-but-luxurious aesthetic and feel (I can still smell it in my mind). And the Bose stereo was the best that I'd ever heard in a car at the time. Also, having a turbo in a well-built sedan (an AWD sedan, no less), was a special treat back then. The progressive building of boost made it feel so much faster than it actually was. My parents were wise enough to unload it immediately after the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired, seeing how many times it had to go back to the dealer and how much those repairs would have cost. They switched to Cadillac after that and have had a much better experience overall, driving the V8 STS that replaced it to over 140k miles without major issue. The 2nd generation CTS-V that followed was even better (except that the rear seats were virtually unusable due to the damn sloping roof).
