I have a 2001 Z3 3.0 w/ 50k miles has a soft top you have to pull down and push up to start, nuclear warning sounder for headlights on , strut tower brace, side vents and lights, roundels all around , appeared in a Bond Golden Eye movie, check , missing key pouch, hard top w/ stand, 2 less cylinders and $190k from the price tag. But includes a ton more driving excitement than the Z8 blvd cruiser.
@gtdjs20066 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug, love watching your video's. At 4:30 you said the coolant reservoir only has "COLD" printed on top. If you look at the side of the tank it has an arrow extending down to a line on the side of the reservoir. This is to indicate the "COLD" fill position of the fluid. As in this is where the coolant level should be if the engine is "COLD". Most coolant reservoirs have a "COLD FILL" position indicator so you don't overfill the coolant. Keep up the cool videos!

Who remembers Top Gear's Clarkson lambasting the BMW Z8? He hated the car. 9 years ago, I really wanted to buy a used Z8. Plenty were available for $85k-$100k on the used market, but the risk of buying a used model with a bent chassis was too real. Most cars were being sold without the performance kit--chassis stiffener. I didn't take the plunge and passed on the purchase. Prospective Z8 buyers have to really know their stuff to avoid getting a damaged car.

However I certainly agree with the BMW drivers bit, I would have to also expand this to include Audi drivers and very often, anyone that has a slightly more upmarket car than most of other people. Unfortunately BMWs and Audis have become so popular these days that they now seem to be the cars of 'most other people' and thus have lost their premium image.

@spudit20036 жыл бұрын
In America you can choose whatever number plate you like I believe (well, withing limits), so he has chosen to buy the same number plate as the one Bond had. The car in the Bond film was not even a real Z8! BMW hadnt actually atarted making the car, so gave the prototype they had to the studio who copied it and made 2 kit cars plus a shell (which gets cut in half). The kit car which is roadworthy is in the London Film Museum. If it WAS the one from the film - this would have been a poor review missing out the quirks and features like surface to air missiles, machine guns and remote driving from the key fob (that was in the BMW 760 review he did the other day though!).

When you were talking about how it could be annoying having the turn signal indicators in the middle you're forgetting BMW drivers don't use them anyway so it wont be an issue.

I've always loved the Z8 so much purely for its form. It is such an elegant car with a great RWD V8 Manual Grand Tourer formula and it's never going to be a bad choice to get if you can afford it. It's only going to keep getting more valuable I'm sure.

The Alpina version was specifically made to be a better grand tourer. The engine they used was lower hp, but had higher torque that came on sooner. The suspension was also softened and they did away with the harsher feeling run-flats. In this respect, the auto transmission makes sense. If you wanted more of a direct, thrilling car, definitely choose the standard Z8. If you're more about cruising in style, the Alpina is for you.

In 1986 I was living in Los Angeles, CA. I bought a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSi in Milan Italy. Drove it to Antwerpen and shipped it to Long Beach CA (all for less than $1,000). The 3.0 CSi was in great shape. When I picked up the car in Long Beach, I had to DoT it before they let me take it. Seatbelts were the main thing. But CA would never let me register the car there. So I drove it to Tucson, AZ, forged a bill of sale, paid $10 for a bond, pulled out 3 of the 6 fuel injectors and went through smog check with flying colors. I got my plates and registration and drove it back to LA. 120 mph between Phoenix and Quartzsite behind two semi’s driving like hell. The faster I went, the lower the car got to the ground, like a big hand on it pushing down. Every year I would declare the vehicle out of state and get my smog test nullified. Easy Peasy. But the paperwork went from floor to waist. It was a big job bringing a gray market car over. This coupe had real Cloisonne baked enamel BMW emblems. The inside was all hand made and fitted. Even had plywood sheets cut partially through so they could bend around the center counsel (covered with leather). Seats were styrofoam shaved with a knife then covered in leather. This car didn’t handle like a 2002. As mentioned in this video, it was a long car with a straight inline 6 with 200 hp. Beautiful car. Beautiful lines. Fun to drive. So yea, I understand his comments about handling.

The reason the soft top convertible doesn’t close all the way is so that there’s no chance of crushing someone’s fingers accidentally. It would hurt much less if someone pushed it in by hand and it didn’t latch, rather than the mechanism not knowing that a persons fingers were there and basically breaking them all
