My brother had one of these back in 95 or 96 i think it was.. He was so in love with it, and his passion for cars absolutely rubbed off on me. I can say that this car probably started it all for me. Thank you Jamie and Tony for this

I had one of these brand new in 1989. I wanted a Peugeot 205 GTI but the dealer in Bradford (JCT600) said they only had a 305 GTI for a test drive, so i went over to Keighly and asked the same question to the Renault dealer about a GT Turbo and they just handed me the keys. I came back afterwards and bought the car in bright red. Amazing car, handled like it was on rails, and went like a scalded cat, great car and great days back then :-)

Remember seeing a few of these on fire back in early 2000. Picked one up for free off a friend to try and fix up, drove it home from Central London with no brakes and stopping at every petrol station to fill up the water and waiting for it to cool. For a few glorious minutes it boosted and felt it’s full potential. Never got that one back on the road unfortunately.

I was lucky enough to have the Raider edition as a company car - H reg back in 1990. These came with Philips RDS radios as standard! But bloody lethal in the wet without ABS. What a riot it was though. These were the days when we had some great cars on the road, 205 1.9 GTI, Escort RS Turbo & the Astra GTE.

Ooh this brings back memories. My 1st car was a Renault 5 1.4 GT (not the GTT). Was a bit of a dog and threw a conrod (I cannot confirm or deny if I was racing another lad in a fiesta at the time... still won) but I loved it. (got another GTS model after that) I always wanted a GTT but as fate would have it I ended up going pug and got a 1.9 GTi. Absolutely loved that thing. Miss it sometimes.

bought mine back in 1991 had it twelve years, lowered and just a bleed valve it was ultra reliable, sold it to a friend who turned it into a track day car, sold it for 1800 quid in 2003, if only i knew eh !!

Mine has a bleed valve and a dump valve. The bleed valve was screwed right up and the dump valve went through diaphragms like toilet paper.

Had one these in 1992 ..loved it still haven't grown up I'm 56 now and have a mk8 fiesta st equally a fantastic car but in a different way ..the gt turbo could be quiet handful at times but many happy times in it .

When cars where cars!! I love this era of hothatches (80's and early 90's), because it's just you and the car and no fancy modern stuff. Never owned a 5GTT but i do own a very mint 1993 R19 16v Ph2 modded with a 2.0 16v (F7R) and did a low boost turbo conversion (about 230 HP/320Nm), makes me smile every time i drive it!

Mate! The best. I'm getting on a bit now, I drove all of them in the 90's. The 5 was by far the fastest. We used to do timed runs, the 5 always smashed it. The handling was the best for me, major lift off over steer but that was like being a ballet dancer through corners. The gear change was head and shoulders above the only real competitor, the 205, the 309 if I'm gonna be controversial. That 1.4 volvo unit had sooo much torque. Amazing memories.

This looks immaculate. I had one of these in Pearl White, 1989. Loved it. Paper thin doors that someone kicked in one night. Every time you put it in for a service you never knew what they would find. Clutch pedal breaking left me stranded twice. I was told that when they were designing them they fitted a 1.7ltr turbo which when they tested on a track twisted the chassis, so they reverted to the the 1.4.

I owned G32MWU back in the early 90s I'm 49 next and I believe my 5 turbo was the best car I have ever owned. I miss her and still dream about her from time to time. I'm no petrol head anymore as I prefer my holidays to car's but my god I wish I still had my 5 turbo.

I used to own this car back in around 96, it was a minter.It was originally sold to the chairman of the Renault 5 Owners Club UK, when I got it it had 18K on the clock and the rear seats were still in the plastic wrapping !!

They were great fun in 1988 and handled brilliantly but R5 turbos loved to blow head gaskets and turbos, where as my 205 1.9 was faster everywhere and never blew up or blew head gaskets. Some years later, I owned a 1.6 Gti as well and that never went wrong either. For me the 205 gti was king with the 16v mk2 golf a close 2nd.

Memory’s, 20 odd yrs ago I had a H plate , got turbo highly modded , gt tuning unbustabable turbo , coil over suspension and scorpion exhaust, it went like billio , and was still good on fuel brill little car ,,, in red , and came with a Sony mini disc player and the first song on the disc was hoochie mama , wild times cheers Shane

Had a five turbo for ten years spent a lot of cash, a lot don’t understand even this reviewer is that the liners only cracked due to numptys winding the boost up without sorting the fueling! My reg was f780dok really miss it now. A guy called from euromotorsport built the fastest ones in the world and he built my engine so you can imagine it was epic! Never had any issues with liners or anything ran 20psi of boost with correct fueling it was epic! My five beat a 350bhp Impreza! Mine was running on full boost 249.7bhp ran it daily on about 210bhp!

Had a silver H reg with 160 bhp and to this day it's the car I think of most. Had loads of things from that to Evo's, Subarus, Lancias and now a Cupra. But if I could choose any one again it'd be the R5

the_real_wrighty Not true for me, only had one breakdown, the temp gauge shot up, seemed like the hg had blown, turned out the rad / oil cooler had an internal leak, so the oil and water were mixed. New rad cured it.

I had a 1990 H reg white brand new out of the box as a company car, always had fun racing Astra GTEs,GTI 1.9 Peugeots and Ford RS turbos, I had no issues with the car and believe me i tried to kill it apart from the cluch cable kept snapping due to the car design for the other side of the road i was told...ahah happy days nice vid mate

Had an original G5 Gold with full billit wheels before turbo ! had twin choke Webber’s !!! It blew away GTI’s !!! The original was a dream to drive ❤️ rusted out on body shell ( Renault took body shell bare by open truck rail to Gordini factory ) must be one out there !

Oooohhhh the memories. My first car. Two jobs to insure it, charged my mates to ride in it, but it was all worth it. Mine was sunroof model, so keyless starts were a thing well before today. haha Tuning was easy, yet dangerous....i truly loved mine. I'll just mention two things further. Anti percolation fan, and the drivers seat bolster. That is all.....lol (R5 owners will know)

I had 2 of them. Had loads of cars. Had a black f reg mint 1 owner car. Best car I ever owned. Got it on 3 wheels every day. Could redline it in second at ridiculous angles. Could eat driveshafts for breakfast x
