As an automotive technician who used to work at a German car specialist, the amount of supercar markup on these things is next level. You really see it in things like the fluid services. They don’t use really special fluids, but because it’s in an SLR, they is automatically 2000% mark up. Same thing happens even just between the “peasant” MB models, say between a C class and an S class. C class filter may be $50, similar part on S Class is $250.

I press the brake pedal to stop normally and the car keeps moving. I finally really got on the brakes and stopped the car within about a 1/2" of the front end hitting the curb. I person I know with a 2019 Corvette Sting Ray only spent trice that amount quoted buying the whole car brand new. The transmission does not blew up if you change the fluids. All AMG transmissions last very long, as long as you replace the oil after 5k, 80k and 150k miles. The 5k transmission oil change is usually also inclusive if the car is bought at a official MB dealer. AMG engines also last very long if they are treatet correcly. Only floored when the engine was on temperature and the oil change intervalls been obeyed - with 100% correct oil. If the motor was pushed realy hard, the timing chain can be stretched at above 120k - new chain + tightener. By some models the tappet can be worn, but this is also a result of bad or false oil as metal flakes between the tappet crankshaft grind the special alloy coating of the tappets away. The cylinder shafts are made of Silumin/Alusil. The aluminium is removed by a acid and the surface left is silicium, so the piston rings move over silicium on a oil film. This surface can only be destroyed by hard particle in the combustion engine - mostly cause by crap pseudo air filter (ebay), or if the car is hard flored in a cold condition. In a cold condition the piston has some lose movement and can tilt/scratch in the chamber.

I was wondering when this could come up in the replies. I'll scroll down further to see if anyone but me brings up Ed's experience with cleaning (meaning sanitizing, disinfecting and fumigating) cars like this. However, he has only had Kimmie to deal with. Paris Hilton could well be on a whole different level, requiring techniques (and chemicals) as yet unknown to Ed.

My one contact with an SLR (while visiting Capetown) was that the interior is claustrophobic, thanks mainly to the engine being so far back in the chassis.

I had a similar feeling of anxiety back in the mid 90s when looking at a used Porsche 928S. I took it for a pre-purchase inspection and went through all the service records to discover horrifying amounts (for me) for basics such as a starter motor at over $900, and other regular servicing items that were eye watering. I was used to buying aftermarket C3 Corvette starters for maybe 60 bucks and DIYing it. There were thousands upon thousands of dollars of service receipts for this 928 and I decided against it, worried for my future financial health and well being. I did eventually own a 928, maybe a decade later, to get it out of my system. Beautiful car and it didn't cost me a dime over the year and a half I owned it.

the SLS and SLR are both great cars for different reasons. The SLR is a leagues above in terms of engineering design and the costs reflect it. Still today nothing makes that bassy rumble like the SLR's m113k engine with the massive intake plenum and side exit exhausts. SLRs are very reliable btw, just not cheap to fix. Watch the harry's garage MSO SLR roadtrip!
