The “feel before you go” is so smart. In school they always gave us the run of the mill ‘stop drop and roll’. They never spoke about meeting places or about feeling for exits. Granted it’s easier for an 8 year old to remember stop drop and roll but when it comes to safety it’s better to over share than withhold information. If the kids don’t get it because they’re too young that’s fine, but if for whatever reason they do understand you, your information has just helped them that little bit more to save their life or another’s.

The first elementary school I attended would regularly have the department bring by a trailer renovated like a living room on fire, and they'd have every student go through it at least once. The trailer was also brought to every school and town festival, as if it were a bouncy house. They also had a yearly festival/parade dedicated solely to the fire department. If you wanted to be a celebrity, the fire department was where you'd have wanted to work. I don't know if they still shower them in tax money, though. I hope they do. The first elementary school I attended would have the fire department come by twice a year. They had a big trailer with the inside renovated to look like a generic living room, and filled with fake smoke. Every student in the whole school had to go through it at least once, sometimes twice, during the day. It was a lot of fun, and I have never forgotten the lessons I learned from it. Unfortunately, they weren't able to simulate the hot door concept, but they did mention it during the assembly before and after the event. Sometimes they brought the trailer to our school festivals. I've rotated through a lot of schools since then, and only one had a firefighter come and give a 10 minute lecture in the classrooms. The first place was the only one where they had the fun event. Granted it was also the only town that dumped a massive portion of their tax money into their emergency services. Firefighters were celebrities there, they made good money and the department participated in every festival- including a yearly one dedicated solely to them. That town was/is overrun by mexican gangs/ drug cartels, but it had its tax priorities straight. It's just unfortunately smack in the middle of the west coast's cocaine road. Where a lot of the dealers and higher ups in gangs live while they conduct business in the nearby cities. The bright side is they keep each other in check, because they don't want their personal lives disturbed. So [violent] crime is oddly low despite everywhere else around it being carnage. [Or did. Apparently now it's really high. Looks like they cut their police and first responder budget, and petty gangs have moved in- messing everything up. I do remember them starting to crack down on ring leaders, and I assume that opened up a rift. Funny story my dad's boss a lumber delivery company, a burly white man, was the #1 of a cocaine trafficking group. He was the first one caught in the crackdown sweep- right as we were moving away. Pretty idiotic to start a crackdown then cut the police budget. The town I now live in did the opposite right after we moved here. Majorly boosted the budget so they could crack down. It worked miracles. Literally went from one of the most dangerous towns in the nation to showing up in magazines as the #1 safest in Washington in just a couple years. There was one event that convinced the city to finally yeet all their gangs. Anyway enough boredom rambling

Aussie here, we used to go to one of the Metro Fire Services training facilities for that. It was cool, they made it entertaining and fun to stay alive, while not treating us as dummies. Our Country FS go to schools, but not as much as when I schooled in the city because we are so paranoid about fire. Lightning storm? Go bag is readied, passport/birth certificate and documents placed in it, pet crates readied. Bush fire warning? Same. Brush fire reported? Same. We had a few close calls so the moment the siren sounds to evacuate, we are out.

I remember getting all these things drilled into my head as a little kid, but it's kind of surprising realizing how much of this I've forgotten 15-20 years later. Just proves adults need to learn fire safety too!
