Amazing tips! Im traveling for the first time to NYC on september. Im arriving at JFK at midnight and was wondering if the airtrain is a safe option? should I just budget some money for the taxi instead? Im staying at the West Side YMCA in 5W 63rd Street

I have been to New York during summer vacation with my. All in all New York is of course a stunning City. But when you go theyre as a tourist, what travel platforms dont tell you is that New York is far away from perfect. When i got theyre I was shocked. The street of our hotel is not one of the busiest ones and as soon as you get away from the main streets, you get to experiense the bad side of New York to. Every 100 meters or so you see people laying on the Street. Someone of them are begging others just "accept" theyre faith. From day one I felt so unconfortable. I mean it cant be true that this is suppost to be normal. What shocked me even more is that homeless people dont make up the higher amount of people in the city and still nobody even cares. People just ignore them. Everybody is busy theyre. But the homeless people are even present on the biggest streets with probaly thousands of people walking past them every day. And still not much people care. All the people around me had no eye for them and I felt like i am the only one who even cares. I felt like I had to do something. Even small things can make a change. For example we homeless people near our street holding the door of a seven eleven shop. One time we gave one of them a bit. On another day we gave a street artist at time square money.OneAnother time in central Park. At one day we had a especially hearth breaking moment. we had been in an imbiss and they gave us three kiwis for free. Me and my parents werent hungry anymore and we desided to give them to a homeless person together with a spoon and a knife. We ended up giving it to a mother with a child who had a sign that asked for food. I was happy to see how much she liked. On one evening. I literally had a breakdown and I cried because I just wasnt able to hold it back anymore. I really felt alone in this situation because I felt like i am the only one who cares around. What world are we living in where this is suppost to be completely normal. If this is suppost to be the city where dreams come true then i dont wanna know how the situation is in other really big citys around the world. So if you read this comment and you life or go to New York or another big city then be human and do something for people in need. If the politicians dont do something then we have to stand up and help those people. If everybody does small things like this examples we can change a lot.

Serious question: how can I take photos if I cannot stop in order not to make people angry? Should I get out the traffic of people, get close to a wall and then take it from there? I'm worried about that in overcrowded places, especially if I want to use my selfie stick?

That tip on shoes is spot on. I visited Manhattan in 2018 and my old worn down very loosely fitting sneakers with me. Had at least 6 blisters on each foot by the end of the day. Also if you're not simply used to walking a lot i recommend you literally start taking walks daily 5-6 weeks before your trip. Living extremely sedentary lifestyle and then all of sudden you walk and stay on your feet the whole day will wreck your feet no matter how good of a shoe pair you got.

The Staten Island Ferry is another nice 25 minute cruise between Staten Island and Manhattan (at the base of Battery Park). It runs every 20 minutes during rush hour (6am-9am) and (4pm-8pm). It's every half hour other times. Best of all? You can get great pics of the Statue of Liberty and is free. It runs 24 hours.

Moreover, during summer time, the front and back doors of the ferry are open and you can actually walk up to a yard from the edge of every ferry.

OMNY is probably the best thing to happen to the NY Subway, especially for tourists. It's so handy and takes the confusion away from using the ticket machines which also attracts dubious folk trying to "help" you use it.

they need a better system for fair capping before they phase out the metro card. I dont like the mon-sunday system they have now. If someone starts is in town from thursday of one week to wednesday of the next, they wind up paying for 2 weeks instead of one.

We watched several of your videos to plan out our days in NYC Manhattan. TY for sharing so many good ideas, hidden gems, things to watch out for, and the enthusiasm to get us even more excited for our trip. John is right/NYC Ferries are AWESOME! Took the family first week of June. The ferries provide a river view of all the buildings. You can sit topside for spectacular views. What blew my mind was that the inside had large tinted windows allowing fir spectacular views while in air conditioning! We took a ferry from Carl Shurz Park on the Upper West Side all the way down to Wall St them transferrd to Dumbo. Such great views of the skyline and Cheap. Bonus is the ferry’s serve beverages including alcohol!

I agree, the ferry ride is not known by foreigners. I've had the opportunity take the ferry from Astoria toWall Street, the views of the NYC skyline is absolutely gorgeous.

The “pointing at the indication board” is adapted from Japan rail companies. They’re trained to point at indicator signed and vocalize what the sign means. This greatly reduces operational mistakes. In the case of the NYC system it indicates to the conductor that the train is positioned properly on the platform to then open the doors safely as some platforms actually have signals mid-platform which the driver must obey resulting is the train not fully in the station. On the NYC subway, it’s the conductor, not the driver who controls the doors unlike most other cities with staffed trains.

I love Bleecker Street Pizza. Thanks for mentioning it. I think it doesn’t get the attention it deserves because some other guy gave them a biased review. The Nona Maria slice is the best. I try to go here every time I come to NYC. We also hit Jackson Heights for Indian food either on our way to or from LaGuardia.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago, I took your advice to take the LIRR from JFK to Penn Station. It was so fast and clean, I will never do the subway again from JFK! (Added bonus: I walked out of Penn Station, crossed 8th Ave and went straight to NY Pizza Suprema for a cheese slice before heading to my hotel!!! 🤣🍕)

Great quick guide. Gosh I miss the city. Back a few weeks ago. Just walking around, seeing people, stopping at my old locals for a beer here an there. My steps went from less than 1,000 to 12,000+. $2.75 got me from 90th to WS transfer and then to Rockaways (just received an email that you can guarantee a seat for $8.00). Uber can be tricky. One stormy morning we had to get to JFK from E 85th and surge pricing was well over $200, but one recent trip was about the same as a taxi.

Another great suggestion: ALWAYS carry earplugs. If it's not a chorus of jackhammers, it's traffic noise, or subway brakes or unwanted buskers who've entrapped you in a crowded car. They can take the edge off for people who get overstimulated very easily. It actually allows you to enjoy the time as your brain can focus much easier.

C'mon, HBB...why u have to post this vid the day after my trip came to an end?? Secondly, Greg (#14) is the man and I will vouch for Food and Footprints to anyone who will hear me. Getting off at Jackson Heights (even as an American who has traveled widely throughout Southeast Asia) gives you a sense of instant dislocation that is wild. And all of the food (including from a Halal Food Truck) was high quality and generally awesome!

As a life-long News Yorker (born and raised) I must Thank You for #7 very much! But I might add, if a tourist doesn't want to go get cursed out by a NYer, then NEVER stop at the top of the staircase as you are exiting the subway because there are other people behind you. I am usually a calm person, but I can't tell you how many times I have had to tell people to move out of the way (and something not in a very nice way). Stopping to look at your Google Maps in front of the exit or taking a selfie in front of the subway sign isn't cool when people behind you need to get to someplace! Great list that should be required reading for tourists coming to NYC! 👍🏾

That's awesome you mentioned the Long Island Railroad. I boarded the railroad instead of the subway accidentally and ended up saving myself 45 mins. I didn't have a ticket when they checked for tickets (I had a Metro Card), but was able to buy a ticket on board to Grand Central for $5.

Oh man, that Rooftop Bar at the now called MSocial Hotel. I have such great memories when we first came to NewYork in 2014 and stayed in that hotel for the first time. Back then it was a Novotel, but for what I can see from your video, the interior hasn‘t changed that much. Spent a lot of weeks in that hotel over the last few years but as you mentioned, the view of the rooftop bar to the heart of the city is just amazing. And as a guest of the hotel you can enjoy the views right at the breafast. No, I am not affiliated with the hotel, I just had great times there…

Some of my friends and I were actually planning on (if Covid doesn’t ruin it) going to the Hard Rock Cafe for NYE since it’s directly across the street from Times Square so we could watch the ball drop, without having to be fully in the huge crowd. Whether or not the restaurant itself stays open until midnight for the event….we don’t know, but either way, we’re gonna try to stay in that area for the ball drop. I’ve lived in NY my whole life, and although most locals avoid the ball drop in person, I’m one of the few NYers who wants to see the action in person.

It is not. The airtrain goes from JFK to Jamaica station but the LIRR you can take once you're already at Jamaica to either get into the city or farther east onto Long Island. The airtrain is a monorail, LIRR uses proper trains

Jon Your video is top knotch..People who visit NYC should know that NYC is the 5 Boroughs Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. I know OMNY is the new technology for NYC Transit. However I miss the tokens. I still use my Metrocard.. Thank you for putting some R32 Subway cars In your clip. Tipping I always 20%. Olive Garden one and done. My stomach didn't agree with the restaurant in Bensonhurst. Eventhough you are talking about Broadway and Midtown Manhattan. Hotels yes I agree with you about how expensive it is in Manhattan. There are 2 Hotels in Sheepshead Bay A Best Western and a Comfort Inn. .

Stay in Staten island St George and take the Ferry stay in a cheaper Air b and b, and walk to the ferry ferry runs 24 -7 and you can easily access downtown waterfront and the train lines.

Great videos and tips. The one thing I think you should mention is CitiBikes as an alternative to the Subway. The last two 5-day trips I have had to NYC my sole mode of transport has been CitiBike. Number one - you get to the see the city as you travel reather than be stuck underground and only see point A and point B. Number 2 - NYC has a highly developed bike path system. Number 3 - it's great exercise, so you can eat more NYC food!
