She was absolutely robbed. What even is the point of those awards if they're incapable of recognizing amazing performances like this. They should've at least given her a nomination. Expand the number of nominees just to make room for her dammit. Alex Wolff deserved a nod as well.

I think a lot of reactors tvs , monitors or computer screens just don’t show it very well because the scene is dark. I have noticed if reactors can see the grandma in the dark corner in the beginning of movie then they tend to see mom in the corner.

After I watched this the first time I looked up information on Paimon. The info certainly explains Charlie's clicking and the beheadings and the remnants that Annie found in her tea when she was in Joan's home. I watched it again and everything made sense. Even the music in the end in the treehouse makes sense.

Paimon was originally meant to posses Annie's dad or brother, but both men killed themselves before he could do so. Presumably, they both realised what Annie's mom was trying to do, but were written off as mentally ill. The cult were stuck with what to do, so Annie's mom bullied her into having children. Annie on some level knows any children she has will be doomed (hence why she tried to have a miscarriage and tried to kill them when sleepwalking) and so kept Peter away but caved to letting Charlie know her grandma. As a result, Charlie was possesed as a baby by Paimon. TL;DR Charlie is Paimon. But Paimon doesn't want to be a girl. So the witches created this convolted plan to put Paimon in Peter, which succeeds at the end. The tragedy with Annie is: 1. She genuinely loves her kids, but wasn't raised in a loving home and struggles to be a good parent. Her violent behaviour (trying to kill her kids) was her trying to 'save them' quite sincerely. 2. She said at the start that she 'is blamed'. And she is. But really she was just like a doll in a doll house controlled by higher forces. Also At the dinner scene, Annie sees Peter sneering all the time because it’s Paimon. Just like when Peter has a regular face in class but his reflection is snarky/sneering.

I read it in a different comment section and didn't notice myself until I read it, but Peter's arm goes up in the shape of Paimon's staff in the classroom when he's being possessed.

41:52 This is the expression that his mum sees on his face all the time-the smirk that she talked about during her outburst at the dinner table. It's no wonder she was so angry. In her eyes, he looked like he was mocking her grief and despair, even though he's never actually looked like that. It's probably some illusion curse to create a rift between mum and son.

My theory is that Annie & Steve couldn't get children, so my guess is that Peter was adopted at one point, but then later in life Annie still got pregnant with Charlie, but really never wanted her and trying to force a miscarriage (so, when Annie is sleepwalking and opens up to Peter, she's actually talking to Charlie, about the miscarriage and everything). ''Paimon'' (who was in the grandmother's body and went over into Charlie's body) could only been risen in a male body, and since Charlie was the first born (not Peter), she was sacrificed, so Peter became the heir, which explains the title ''Hereditary''....

The subtlety in this movie is amazing, right before the fire in the dream sequence the mother says “I was trying to save you” it sounded like she wanted an abortion when she said “I tried to stop it” but actually she knew that her mother was doing something weird and that was the reason she pushed it onto her to get pregnant

Yeah, there's no denying that seeing this in a packed and dark theater was a fantastic moviegoing experience. That whole ending scene starting when Peter woke up and his mom was up in the ceiling was so disturbing and the collective audience dread was intense. But, up to a point that where things started to fall apart for me. So, she gets possessed and now she knows some kind of demonic parkour? How the hell was she hanging onto the ceiling and banging her head against the attic door?? How did she get in the attic and hang herself and start cutting her own head off in the space of about a minute with Peter just six feet away??? So well directed, shot, etc, but the story got a little wonky for me a lot at the very end. Huh ... I can think of another Ari Aster attic scene that was super disturbing, too, but I shan't spoil it just in case.

Think...no part of this movie would have happened, if Annie right from the beginning, went through her mom's boxes! Pro tips...go back to the scene, the mom's work table, watch the blue bottle! The director did Midsonmar as well. It's good but I just kinda didn't buy the premise, so I wasn't as impressed. This movie here, I would put up with The Thing, Exorcist, the shining, a few others. How Toni Collette didn't win an Oscar for this, is beyond me! A bit of horror truth, when he smashed his face in the desk, he was supposed to hit padding but didn't. His face looking all dislocated, was real! Also Peter's first class, is the same subject from the original Holloween, and the trailer for this came out the same day, the Halloween reboot did!😮😮😮Another callback is during their seance, the clock stops, callback to exorcist! What was hereditary in this family wasn't mental illness, it was Grandma and proly those before her, driving family members insane, with their satanic/cult worship! Charlie was already possessed, represented by the clicks. Heard while she was alive, and after she died, BEFORE the seance. I would say, joan tried sacrificing her son and grandson. Either they killed themselves, or she killed them. Seems if Paimon is not happy with a body it is in, it has to die and be beheaded, so paimon can leave the body, i say it happened to dear old grandma, and definitely happened to Annie and Charlie! I just noticed a weird parallel...the biggest foreshadowing...when the dad gets charlie from the treehouse to go to the funeral, she standing up in the corner, and the camera view is from below slightly like shes twisting and floating!!!! Then In the almost final scenes, the mom is up in the corner of charlies room then floats away, then is up in the corner, above peter, as he's looking at his burned dad!😮 And finally, charlie is back where we first met her, hanging in the treehouse! Biblically speaking, u NEVER want to conjure someone who is dead...this NEVER goes well! King Saul conjured the spirit of the profit, and all went downhill real fast! Anyone notice in mom's room, triangle on the floor. The mirror? Like absolutely zero reflection?😮😮😮😮. For me, I just couldn't by into Midsonmar, so I thought it was stupid. But u may like it. His next was with Joaquin Phoenix, in I think called, Beau is afraid. The Oscars ought to before themselves on this one! She has been a top ten actor, male or female, for 30 years! The mom in 6th sense, this, knives out, a offbeat comedy with Cameron Diaz, there's nothing she can't do! also think, every word out of grandma and Joanie's mouth was a lie. And u can bet they both killed off the male members of their families, to gain power or get Paimon into one of the male bodies. Or both. Joanie knew, if Annie did a seance, by herself or with family, she would let Paimon/Charlie loose in her house, because Annie had zero idea how to end a seance, or send demons back to where they came from. So Annie's dad was either starved by Grandma or he did it to himself purposely, to be weak and no good for a demon. Annie's brother said in his suicide note, Grandma was putting people inside him. And Joanie? Probably herself, drowned her son and grandson! Also after Charlie's death, the mom goes to sleep in the treehouse, watch the wall when the camera zoom pulls backwards!😮😱

Sadly she was NOT nominated for this performance, because the Oscars are often SUPER-biased against horror movies.

Charlie was never "Charlie." She was born Paimon, but it was the wrong body. Remember ... Annie said she never cried, even as a baby. She was never a normal little human girl.
