Featuring a Frenchman playing a Scottish Highlander, a guy from Ohio playing an ancient Russian barbarian and the most famous cinematic Scotsman of all time playing a Spaniard who is actually an ancient Egyptian. And yet somehow it all works. Connor's odd accent, however, was Chris Lambert's idea since he figured someone who's lived for centuries all over the world would have a non-descript accent. Hence the "lots of different places" exchange.

It's so refreshing to hear reactors giving credit to a film like this that is very much of its time. A lot of people make fun of the effects, and say things like 'oh it's so cheesy and 80's!' Whats wrong with that if the story telling is good and the soundtrack is legendary? They forget that films like this are the reason why we have the filming techniques of today. They broke new ground, the hard way filming this! Anyway, thanks to you both, I totally enjoyed your comments. The scene with Heather makes me cry to this day, and I saw it on release in the UK back in the day when I was 18! It was epic on the big screen. It's such a beloved gem because there was nothing like it before, well apart from Terminator but that's a different story... cheers from a UK film buff 👏 👍

This movie was truly what I would consider one of the best fantasy films. I had watched in a long time. For 1984 this film was very well done and even better. The plot was not complicated and gave it very much of an old fantasy flavor to it. Of course people will dump on it because you’re keeping it to today, but let’s be honest 40 years from now they’re gonna say the same thing about the marvel films. By the way for a film that’s 40 years old. It’s still works.

Fyi, There was a tv series Highlander starring Adrian Paul as Duncan McCloud 1992 - 98. It was very successful and had 6 seasons. I believe there was also a movie with Duncan and Connor together after the series was done, and I watched every bit. 😂

Interesting fact: When Queen was approached to do the music for this film; they were apprehensive to do so. Having done the music for Flash Gordon (1980), they weren't sure about making music for a movie. They had just come off their epic performance at Live Aid in July of 1985, and were eager to go back in the studio to record new music. They had some ideas, but nothing concrete. Then they were approached by the director Russell Mulcahy (pronounced Mull-Cay-Hee) for this film; saying that he wanted to have a title song that had an "anthem quality" to it. He showed them a 20-minute rough cut of Highlander; to give the band an idea of what he wanted to do for the film. When they saw it, they said that not only would they do the title track for the film; but that they'll record approximately six or eight songs for the film. The songs they wrote were: - Princes of the Universe (the title track; reused for the Highlander TV series in 1992-1998) - A Kind of Magic - One Year of Love - Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme) - Don't Lose Your Head (which in this film has a remix with a cover of Frank Sinatra's New York, New York) and - Who Wants to Live Forever During these sessions, they also wrote a song called "One Vision", which wound up being used for the film Iron Eagle (1986). The songs were released for their album "A Kind of Magic". The band went out on tour in support of the album; touring overseas in Europe, Italy, Rome, Germany, Budapest; culminating in two memorable nights at Wembley Stadium (one year after they stole the show at Live Aid), and a final show at Knebworth Park, in front of 125,000 people. This tour was the last that Queen did with Freddie Mercury on lead vocals. A year later he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, but he still continued to make music with Queen until the very end in November of 1991.

@@adriantrusca1245 He is 100% correct. According to Mulchay, he originally thought of Duran Duran for the soundtrack but wanted a harder edge so they reached out to Queen. Here is the entire question and answer from the Sep 2023 interview between Dave Everley and Russell Mulchay. How did Queen’s involvement in the soundtrack come about? I loved Queen, I was a huge fan of their music, and I really loved the soundtrack they had done to Flash Gordon. So we contacted them and I think they were a little sceptical at first, but we invited them over to the edit studio in London and we showed them 20 minutes of cut footage - six or seven different scenes. All the band came over, and they came out and said, “That’s really cool.” So I thought we’d get one song out of them. But two days later we got the message back that they all wanted to write a song: Freddie wanted to write as song, Roger wanted to write a song, so did Brian and John. I ended up getting five songs in the end, which was amazing.

During the wrestling match, those were NOT Aextras. They were supposed to be at a hockey game. But the NHL objected at the last minute. So the production company had to scramble and find something comparable. The hockey game was supposed to simulate battle on a field and they were going to use it as a transition back to Scotland.

The mad thing about the sword fights is that Christopher Lambert is almost blind. So swinging a sword around in nearly dark places was an interesting experience for all involved. Also, they had the great get out for having to explain immortals - no one knows why they are, they just are. But the sequels try and explain it or just do a less well done remake of this one. The opening shot sweeping through the stadium was accomplished using a computerized system that held the camera on four wires. The system was invented by the inventor of the Steadicam stabilizing camera system, Garrett Brown. And his name is pronounced MUL-KAY-HEE. And funny how you both mentioned how clearly the relationship between Rachel and Connor was established in so few scenes, but The Crow remake over-extended the Erik and Shelley relationship and couldn't even come close to conveying an actual one. Something really special about these old films the new ones can't come close to matching.

Originally Queen was supposed to do one song but when they were shown the scene they were supposed to do that was enough for them to ask to do the whole movie. The final fight was done on the Silver Cup studio lot which was the actual location and then a replica for the destruction of the Silver Cup sign.

My Dad was a big Highlander fan, both of the movies and the series with Adrian Paul (which is very 90s but pretty sweet, check it out). One of my favorite memories growing up was coming home after football practice to watch an episode or two of the series with him. We cleared the box set in a Summer. It was pretty cool. Russell Mulcahy has always been better known for directing music videos than he ever was for cinema, even in the face of THIS. He thought it would be "a styrofoam castle in Maine" and unknown actors, but when he heard that it was going to shot in Scotland, using a real castle and having Sean Connery in a leading role, he couldn't believe it - it was his first script, and he had struck gold. Many years ago I met a guy who had fought in battles with the Scottish clansmen reenactors, a group known as "The Clan" (less sinister in Scotland than in the US). He told me they were pretty crazy, once uprooting a tree to use as a weapon. Greg Widen visited the Scottish set on one of the days they shot the battle. The fighters and extras were soaked through and were sitting in a pub trying to get warm. Widen entered the pub and was recognized. "That's the guy who is responsible for this!", someone yelled. "Uh-oh", Widen thought, but was greeted with an enthusiastic roar.

As an 80's kid who grew up with this movie, I can tell you for sure... you don't have to watch Highlander 2. IF you do however, watch the Renegade Cut. It's more cohesive, but still not that good. 3 is decent. The TV show is also decent. And if you're into card games, The Highlander card game is one of my favorite. Glad to see the younger generation appreciate this movie.

I've been following the highlander universe forever and my favorite part of the lore revolves around the incentive to fight other immortals. Not just the prize, but the power. Every head you take has their essence and strength absorbed into you. So over the centuries you're drawn to fighting others for the power up. So good.

Love, love, love this movie. Part period piece, part fantasy, part music video. Always makes me weep when Heather passes away, just pure love. This and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan are Christopher Lambert’s best work. And the Queen soundtrack, amazing. Brings me back to my childhood. Great reaction gentlemen. Thanks.

I really like in the film that the immortals are so wise that they don't raise their voices to any mortal. After all, they know that even if they disagree with them on something, they will end up dancing on their graves anyway. Why should they fret?

Such a great film to watch. I always love the commentary you guys have for these films. The one that i enjoyed most is in the scene where McCloud proves to the woman that hes immortal and then they make out and Andrew says, "to be fair he did wait a couple hundred years". No truer were spoken. Great reaction guys!

OMG YES! Now stop at this one. Never watch any more. For this franchise, There Can Be Only ONE! ... But seriously, don't watch the sequels because they ruin everything and kill the magic of the lore your mind builds as you watch this 1st film. They're terrible, they suck, and they'd be a waste of your time. This is a one film franchise. Plus the series.
