She is a technically brilliant top tier vocalist (10 yrs conservatory school) and has a supernatural emotive ability. An absolute beast live. Known for her effortless belts, she is just as impressive for her rock solid control at quiet dynamics. Composes & writes the majority of her songs (like this one) in French, English, Italian & Spanish. Her covers are brilliant as well. I'd absolutely recommend working your way through all her live vids of this concert From Lara With Love. My gateway drug to her work was a performance from this concert Je Suis Malade (vid with English & French subtitles because lyrics are incredibly important to understanding her choices) remains the single most stunning, jaw-dropping performance I've _ever_ seen. I was a voice major in college and you are required to take English, Latin, French, German and Italian and are required to translate all your pieces which isn’t easy. You need to understand what you’re singing about to connect with an audience. But it is my understanding that she also SPEAKS several languages as well, which is not the same thing. That’s even harder. Our niece just graduated from a music conservatory this year. She chose to sing in Russian often, which isn’t easy either.

She went on to learn Spanish and become fluent young. She understands and is passable in two more, I understand. Sings with great competence in 12 total.

I get goosebumps on this song. I believe it’s because she’s more international that she doesn’t get more attention. It was back then I was sitting on the living room floor and my husband was on the couch - we were wrapping Christmas gifts for clients and wanted some music on so we put on PBS where she had a special. Our attention immediately went to the TV and our jaws dropped. I believe she speaks, like, six languages or something. And, according to Rick, she’s “easy on the eyes” too. I think she has sang with Josh Grobin. But my goodness! The power in that little package. And so emotional! Glad you liked it! 💛 Thank you for playing it. A birthday surprise for me (was yesterday)!

Then one night a couple of years ago, I was surfing channels and hit PBS. There she was. I have noticed that in your list of reactions, you have not reacted to Dimash Qudaibergen, a singer from Kasakhstan and who is considered to be the best singer in the world and I have to agree. One of his idols is Lara Fabian, also Micheal Jackson, Pavori, etc. Dimash and Lara have also performed together and it was incredible. If I remember correctly, she wanted to break through in the USA, but they wanted to "change" her to make a comparison with Celine Dion. And it was not his choice. She remains one of the best singers in the world, not only because of her voice, which is extraordinary, but also because she is one of the rare singers, if not the only one, to convey so much emotion in her songs. This concert from Lara is the best ever solo concert and you just picked the first song as an appetizer. Please react to Adagio (english), Broken Vow (English), caruso (Italian), Je suis malade (french), You are not from here (English), Perdere L’Amore (italian), … from the same concert using Macadamia restored versions. Lara did not get the recognition she deserved in the US due to some music industry issues, but is a superstar in Europe and Latin America. She is also highly prized by the top vocalists ( Barbra Streisand and Josh Groban did cover some of her songs, the new generation is also referring to her and doing covers: Dimash, Floor Jansen, Diana Ankudinova, Gabriel Henrique, …) and also by top music producers (Igor Krutoy, David Foster, John Williams, …). Holy Cow, you mentioned Wynonna, so I just listened to her doing this song. More country, but unbelievable. I can't get it out of my head. It makes me remember, there was a TV music series called "Crossroads" (on CMT I think) that paired country and rock artists in performance. About 10 or so years ago I saw Wynonna paired with Ann Wilson. Still gives me goosebumps. I'm going to have to see if there is any video footage. I'll send it to you if I can find some.

This song was a medium hit in the US. Her only other hit was the Most popular one. It was called I Will Love Again. It made it to top 10. Much of her career has been outside the US . She has a great voice but the song choice was never that great to propel her to greatness, in my opinion. She needed to hook up with better writers and producers. A lot of mediocre songs sung beautifully.

She's primarily a French singer and she writes her own stuff. Greatness is not defined by whether the US embraces an artist, and there is an interesting background story as to why she wasn't embraced, notably the efforts of Céline's husband to sabotage her career in the US.
