READ THE DESCRIPTION ⬇️⬇️⬇️
The point of this video is not to prove which engine is superior but rather to help inform everyone of the pro's of both engine sizes.
There's no doubt that you cant go wrong with a V8 build and that the V8 has the upper hand when it comes to power and torque, BUT I also want it to be known that a V6 build can be just as effective as the V8.
At the end of the day I want everyone to go out there and have fun with their builds and know that a good looking and functional rig is possible regardless of engine size, and I want to grow a healthy environment of 4th gen enthusiasts.
Hopefully you all can gain some valuable information from this video. Go out there and have fun, because thats why were all here!!!

The V6 is about 200lbs lighter over the nose, which makes for better balance (better center of gravity, being it weighs less, and the front 2 cylinders sit much farther back), and is an advantage if you’re wheeling harder tracks. Another thing to note about the 4.88 rear ends, is that the ring and pinion has much less meat because it has so many more, and smaller teeth. Combined with the extra torque and shearing force of the lower gearing, this is a huge weak point, especially for the stock 8’’ rear ends in these trucks. If you upgrade to a diamon axle or D60, this shouldn’t be nearly as much of an issue, but for an 8’’ or 8.2’’ it’s best to stick with 4.56’s to have more strength on the ring and pinion teeth. In regards to the higher RPM at 75, it definitely seems like the truck hums on the freeway. This can be both good, and bad depending on how you look at it. Higher rpm will circulate the water pump more frequently, with the same airflow, while some say the added rpm increases heat to offset that. The shorter gearing will take a little bit of stress off the transmission as well, generating more torque mechanically. It really depends on how you look at it. If you drive thru mtn passes frequently (IE if you live in Washington, Colorado, ect) the 4.88’s really do make a major difference on the freeway. Being I have an 03 V8, stock manifolds, 4.88’s with the truck weighing 5400lbs, I wish I had gone with 4.56’s. I feel like my 8’’ is on borrowed time, having wheeled it hard and having 40k miles on it. I plan to go with a diamond 9’’, and down the road 37’s in hopes to offset the high RPM. And my DT headers have been sitting in my garage for the last 1.5 years, I need to get those installed. I enjoyed your guys discussion format with the good backdrop, and the transitions to the rigs driving. Subscribing for more 👍

Not a usual commenter, but this was a good video/discussion. I’ve had my 06’ V8 for about 3.5 years, and having drove a 5th gen, I agree with most points in the video. They’re about the same, a capable rig with poor gas mileage unless regeared.

I'm the original owner of an 03 V6, Limited 4WD. It has over 300,000 miles and runs like a champ. You should do a video on the overlooked maintenance needs that truly get a T4R near the 500k mark, all of which can be self performed in expensively: - Degreased, safely, engine every 20k (helps find hidden issues and make maintenance clean.). - PCV valve every 60k - Spark plugs and coil packs at every 70k. - Oil changes at 3k NOT anything higher. - Diff fluids at 15k. - Trans fluid, touchy subject but inspect. - Replace charcoal filter at 100k. - Replace fuel sender at 150k. - Water pump at 100k. - Replace belts as recommended. - Replace Cats at 150k (at this point they're suffocating your engine. Doing this with exhaust, will revive HP.). - Replace Exhaust at 150k (minor suffocation). - Perform head gasket leak test randomly once you're over 100k (cheap). - Retorque all every 10-15k. - Seafoam. Touchy subject. - Filters every 3k. - Etc., etc., etc. No good videos on the FULL maintenance needs and the relationship to high mileage 4 runners or Tacomas, for that matter.

Cool, so a 4runner spend more time in the shop than a land Rover? Gotcha. Toyota undeserved reliability rating. That's bc ppl spend thousands of dollars and hours in the shop and constantly replacing everything
@JesusWSalazar
@JesusWSalazar Ай бұрын
@@HarryKuloh I can see why you may feel that way but when you actually span out the maintenance schedules and their connected spend/cost of ownership and their long life cycle, vs the same for other manufacturers, Toyota typically is cheaper...

I have a similarly built V8 runner. 35's, bumper, skids, sliders, drawers/fridge etc. I went back and forth between 4.56 and 4.88 forever, ended up with 4.88s and ARB lockers. No regrets. I should have done the regear so much sooner, drivability is much better and far less transmission hunting. I am running 2500 RPM at 75mph.

Man that’s really interesting because that’s what I’m at on 4.56 gears. I’ve seen a ton of v8’s go 4.88 and I always thought the rpm would be super high, but that’s pretty reasonable for your setup

@@Garrett_Logan The kit was about 6600 all said and done but I invested in several other items since the top and front of the engine was going to be very accessible during the install. I'm a fully armored, RTT'd, 33'd, and winched up vehicle. Very Heavy. MPG, couldn't really tell you yet as I'm having way too much fun with it. I did take a leisure trip that was about 1k miles total and got about 17-18mpgs on average. I don't think MPGs are greatly effected unless you mash the pedal a lot. I'm currently working with a tuner and we're estimating approximately 300 WHP and 370 LBFT of torque at the wheel when we're all said and done. Thats a little less then they were able to get out of a 5th Gen with the same, but dual VVTI engine.

My FJ Cruiser v6 with 35" tires and 4.88 gears, Doug Thorley long tube headers and y pipe, RIPP coils, electric fan, Nomad valve body upgrade, Unichip piggy back ecu tuned for faster shifting. It has zero shift issues now and takes off without that usual lag in response. I have a massive exhaust leak and my mpg is trash, 14mpg but it zips up to 85mph in no time and wants to keep climbing. The long tube headers definitely affect the top end. My regear has me at about 2800rpm around 75mph. Would love to put 37" tires but I don't think I would fit in my works parking garage by that point and I drive almost 100 miles daily so I am paying a car payment in fuel as it it

When changing ratio, ballpark of ~250rpm per step (3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88). So 3.73 -> 4.56, would be ~750 higher. If 3000 at 75 w/ 4.88, would be ~500 lower w/ 4.30.
