Great music, great game! I played it a lot as a kid. The Iron lich and its sound caused me nightmares though... The big flying skull with terrifying sounds and strong attacks

Heretic was indicated in Germany until July 2020. Doom Eternal released March 20, 2020. I played Heretic when i was 6 years old. I still remember dreaming nightmares to this day. maybe the game is the root of the nightmares, FFS! but for sure i did enjoy playing it a lot! this sound scares me even today! xDxD

I love how E2M1 starts with this big grand opening, a fanfare... really cool! It's becoming a pain getting MIDI playback in these modern systems, who would think this, the most harmless of things, MIDI music, becoming such a pain... If anyone out there plays these old Doom engine games on Linux let me know, on my end there's always some stuttering and crackling sounds when I play midi, particularly when it has to start playing a new track or replay the current one again. MIDI using 10% CPU? Something is not right...

I know this is years late but I have Manjaro linux and run these games flawlessly with the midi music using fluidsynth (I think?) and the sc-55 soundfont the doomworld community compiled. It sounds pretty much like this video!

A few years back it was discovered that MIDI datastreams could be hacked to allow arbitrary code execution, so most modern operating systems don’t come bundled with players/drivers that can play it anymore for security reasons and most “reputable” players that still use MIDI added a bunch of code to “sanitize” the music of any dangerous inputs...which is why it’s running takes so much computation power. MIDI is an open standard tho and still vital for music production, so there ought to be some good open-source but bare-bones solutions out there *somewhere* that bypass those kinds of checks...but be very careful that you trust the site that downloads it, ‘cuz that application running PROPERLY is a vector for virus infection.

I sure have heard The Graveyard a lot in Doom mods like Hereticial Doom, some intermission screens to Doom map packs, and others. It is catchy though with the drums and the guitar parts.

Je suis d'accord avec toi, ça fait plaisir d'avoir des commentaires pour montrer que cela intéresse des gens quand on fait des vidéos. Perso étant de JV, la première partie des années 90 ce fut mon époque PC à 400%. Et ré-entendre ces ost avec un SC-55 c'est limite si je ne redécouvre le jeu ! :) Et d'ailleurs c'est grâce à toi si mes 2 projets de vinyles peuvent aujourd'hui se concrétiser !

There is no such thing as 'standard General Midi'. The General MIDI norm only standardized wich instruments must be included and in which order (Instrument 1 is 'Piano' for every GM device), but each company uses its own patches and samples for the instruments. Use a Korg, a Yamaha or a Roland expender with the same MIDI track, they all sounds different. SC-55 sounds like the 'Microsoft Software GS Synthetiser' (MS Soft Synth) included in Windows since 1995. The reason is : MS bought the rights to use the Roland SC-55 soundbank to make their software synthetiser. But the MS Soft Synth is a poor emulation of the original hardware : samples are heavily compressed and hardware effects (panning, reverb, chorus) are poorly emulated.

SC-55mkII has 28 polyphony capabilities.... E1M4 only uses 18 simultaneous notes maximum. I tried with a new and much better MIDI interface (and with other midi players) and result is the same.
