Heritage Route 15 - Goodbye 😭 after 60 years | Monday-Friday service withdrawn

Join Doubledeckeranton as he 'takes a ride' on Heritage Route 15, as Transport For London finally withdraws its 'Monday to Friday' service from the streets of London. 🚍🚐😥
Starting at 'Tower Gateway' with iconic 'Tower Bridge' and 'Tower of London' in the background, Anton takes in the 'sights and sounds' of a vintage 1964 AEC London Routemaster bus operated by the bus company Stagecoach.😁👍
The AEC Routemaster is a front-engined double-decker bus that was designed by London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company (A.E.C.) and Park Royal Vehicles. 🔧🔩⚙
This particular bus has an engine configuration of 9.8 litres and is a six cylinder diesel. 🚌💨
The No.15 takes in centuries 'old London' such as Monument on the north side of London Bridge alongside St Paul's, Ludgate Circus, Fleet Street, The Royal Courts of Justice, Aldwych, The Strand, passing 'world famous' hotels such as 'The Savoy' and 'Waldorf', culminating at its final destination ➡️ Trafalgar Square. 🏛⛲🙂
The 'B registered plate' has been working the streets for nearly six decades picking up all kinds of 'clientele' ranging from those commuting 'to and from work', to the many tourists that have visited this ancient and modern city! 🚦🚍🚏🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🏃‍♂️👤👥
D.D.A. is amazed that these 'rear entrance' buses have endured for so long, while other 'more modern' buses have already been consigned to the scrap heap long ago..!!! 🤔✅
Legroom on these buses is adequate with only centimetres to spare, but these buses were designed in the 1950's.
Passenger Capacity is a lot less compared to it's more modern 'siblings' with only five passengers allowed to stand near the rear of the lower deck! 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️👤👥
Over the decades, the double-decker bus has got larger & heavier and thus this 'cute Routemaster' weighs in at a light-weight 7.2 tonnes.
In todays comparison, buses break the scales at an eyebrow raising 11-12 tonnes...😲 meaning these 'old 1960s deckers' actually weigh the same as a medium sized modern single-decker bus of 6-8 tonnes. 😁
Anton managed to interview 'heritage' bus driver Mandy who has driven these AEC Routemasters since 2006. 💁‍♀️🙂
Mandy appeared on the BBC series 'The Routemasters' shown on Television in 2013... 🏙🚦🚍🚏🚶‍♂️🚐...🌇...➡️ 🏡 📺
Her ambition was to drive these 'classic buses', as she travelled on them from her childhood. 😊
The sight of these Routemasters on Londons streets will be sadly reduced, after hosting 'millions of passengers' over the years. 🚍👀
The result of their age and ever increasing emissions failing current EU laws, means these buses will cease to operate in the 'not too distant future'...!!! 😟😢😭❌👎
Since March 1st 2019, the 'heritage bus route No.15' will only operate on weekends and bank holidays...!!! 🙄

I love driving the old Routmaster, it talks to the driver. The new buses are not built to the same standard. Our company is selling all their heritage fleet, they don’t have any mechanics left who can fix the old buses.

You can still ride these buses, as well as the older RTLs, in public service on the 339 which runs between Epping Station and North Weald EOR Station, with some extended to Ongar and Shenfield on most weekends!

I think they've gone backwards in terms of building buses disposable buses with 10-15 year life span, engine in the back to boil up, rattle like hell, and rot underneath. Routemasters were well put together,great design and easy to work on.

Used to catch the 15 from/to Ladbroke Grove, The Eagle - Trafalgar Square on my daily commute in the early 80s when these buses reigned supreme on Central London routes. As if a few heritage buses running weekdays is going to add much to emissions, EU PC claptrap! Nice one anyway Anton!

I remember getting on these as a kid in the 80s in Ilford the 25s to Victoria were RM's with the old Moqette cloth red Rexine sides and the AEC engine coupled with the gearbox and that distinct whine good memories

Shame that these buses are going. I think they should keep a few and make them as a tourist attraction and overhaul the ones left in use in London. Well I was going to visit London again to have a ride on one later this year but I needn't bother now although I would change my mind if London got some Alexander-Dennis Enviro 500 MMC tri-axles with air-con like those used in Hong Kong as they are great buses in my opinion.. Not just Routemasters, but open back half cab buses generally were such a civilised way to travel. A conductor checking everything and everybody was okay, a little recess for them to stand and a helping hand with pushchairs and suitcases in the hold. Watching the world go by from moquette and horse hair seats. I remember Lord Longford being a regular on my route when I lived in London. Happy days.

I didn't know until this film that the Routemaster's on the heritage routes were going too. Routematsres and RT's were everywhere when I was a kid. I remember the RM in it's various stages too, the all over advert ones in the 70's, remember seeing the Esso Uniflo RM and the McDougall's Flour RM, the Tartan RML, the QE silver jubilee RMs in '77 and the shoplinker RM's. Remember later the Northern General RMF's on the sightseeing tours too as well as the one off FRM in '81. Abbey Wood was my local garage, full of RM's for route 171A, 180 and then 180A, great memories. RM one of the greatest vehicles ever.

@@DoubleDeckerAnton yes, there are few Routemasters in Poland, but I don't know how many :( Never seen one in person, but I've found photos with them on the internet.

I've driven AEC and Cummins engined Routemasters always used to drive in semi auto mode.

@@DoubleDeckerAnton I definitely miss driving them but it's not all bad as I have a 1967 Morris minor and my brother has a 1956 standard 8, we also have a 1956 Bedford green Goddess fire engine so we still get to drive old vehicles. We also know a chap who has several Routemasters running and restoring.

Amazing video Anton and I love the editing and the intro and it was worth the wait. Such a shame TFL have withdrawn the daily Monday-Friday service and it's probably won't be long until the whole service is withdrawn. Unfortunately these don't have the original engine and had a Dennis dart engine fitted so are really dartmasters. Some have been refurbished and have the original moquette and interior.

@@DoubleDeckerAntonThe Dartmasters have a 5.9 Cummins as found in Darts from 1989-2001 the newer Darts from 2001-2007 had a 3.9 Cummins with the SPDs having the 5.9 Cummins. The Cadets and Commanders you drove in Yorkshire had the same engines and gearboxes as Darts,they are Dart clones built by VDL/DAF (SB120 for the Cadet and SB200 for the Commander) for Arriva they are a VDL/DAF dealer in the UK. There is also Euro 6 Routemaster with the 4.5 ISBe that is used in the Enviro200s.

Ha ha love the pose in the Square . We had these in Glasgow in the 90s A Blue one that had "Magic Bus" written in Yellow it was a Number 46 from Castlemilk to Easterhouse . I loved it jump on an off . Trying to hide from Conductor up top or pretending that your ticket was checked. Stagecoach ran some aswell they were White . Only see them in the Transport museum or the Glasgow Bus museums. There is a Bistro one that drives about Glasow city that's is a Gin bar bus lol . I saw that other day I forgot about that . I enjoyed the wee London tour an added bonus . Keep the intro . Thanks for sharing

The Routemaster outlived many buses that came to replace it somehow like the Fleetlines I myself owned a Fleetline model in CMB livery

@@DoubleDeckerAnton no routemasters with us we have got Volvo b7tl alexander alx400 and b9tl Wright eclipse Gemini 2 most our historic stuff has ended up out of service and in Swansea bus museum I'm mainly driving streetlites and darts and occasionally get to drive a enviro

...hi Roy...yes...there were loads of routemasters on many routes...but now route 15 is only going to be seen on weekends and bank holidays...!!!

Those buses are still in use on the weekend services; I only made my first trip back on the 24th February - but I also made it out for the final day of the weekday service on the 1st March 2019; the buses themselves are around 55 years old new in 1964; some of the later batch of the RMs and the actual Routemaster itself will be 65 years old in September; although RM1 is only 63 years old as it entered into service back in February 1956

They were in service for so long because they received a complete overhaul every three years at Aldenham, something that doesn't happen these days hence the shorter service life of modern buses. It was the same with the RT and RF buses, in service from 1939 - 1976+ and 1951 - 1976+

The editing on this video is nicely done. It's worth the wait, they're really good! And it's a shame that it's being withdrawn on weekdays. But hey, at least it's not getting withdrawn altogether.
