Chickens make great pets, i know from experience having adopted 3 rescued ex-battery hens, they couldn't walk when I first got them as they'd been confined in tiny crowded battery cages for so long & had been debeaked to prevent pecking other hens from the stress of being in overcrowded cages. After much TLC they were running happily around my yard and had befriended my 2 dogs and 3 cats with whom they shared the yard during the day. Each hen had her own distinctive personality and loved pats and attention they also answered to their names. sadly after a few years they all succumbed to a disease of the uterus common in battery hens as a result of being forced to continually lay eggs when in the battery farms. RIP Lily, Rose and Bess 🌺
@charlidabomb3723
@charlidabomb3723 Жыл бұрын
How do you feed debeaked hens?? I'm truly curious how they would be able to pick up scratch??
@dona3698
@dona3698 Жыл бұрын
The very tips or ends of their beaks had been surgically removed, the bit they would normally use to peck with had they been able to free-range and forage apparently debeaking is common practice on battery hen farms. I choose not to eat eggs (or meat and dairy) for humane reasons but if I did I would choose free-range.
@cashagon
@cashagon 4 ай бұрын
I've only known free range chickens. Everyone I know who's ever owned chickens free ranged them. Better for the chickens and an easy pest control. Granted, these were just hens meant for one family and not mass producing eggs for sale. I... really don't like the farm industry. The more I hear about it.
@RandomPerson-b1g
@RandomPerson-b1g 2 ай бұрын
Is debeaking ethical? Is it like clipping a pet’s nails or more like declawing a cat?
@DrummerrDuckie
@DrummerrDuckie 2 ай бұрын
@@RandomPerson-b1g I tried googling it but got mixed results on whether ir not the beak can or will actually grow back, but it _does_ cause pain, so I'd say it's more like de-knuckling and de-clawing a cat in that sense. Gonna copy-pasta what I found: "Approximately 1/3 of the beak tip is cauterized and is not expected to grow back, leaving the beak permanently blunted as the pullet grows into adulthood." "Regrowth: The keratin covering of a chicken's beak will grow back slowly over weeks or months. If the tips regrow, the beak may need to be re-trimmed." "Pain: Beak trimming can cause pain and stress for the bird. The beak is a complex organ with many nerves and sensory receptors, so tissue damage and nerve injury can occur." "Beak trimming is an invasive procedure that is performed without pain relief and can cause stress, as well as acute and chronic pain in birds [4]. Beak trimming can damage the sensory receptors in the bird’s beak leading to a loss of beak sensation and function, which can affect the bird’s ability to feed and perform other normal behaviours such as foraging and ground pecking. Birds can also develop neuromas after beak trimming, which is where the nerve fibres in the beak begin to regrow and result in chronic pain." And there was one last result that came from a person who'd rescued commercial chicks who were already de-beaked, and that person claimed that sometimes the beaks can grow back and make a full recover, while some beaks just never regrow due to too much damage.

@@EyeSeeThruYou Guess my chickens dropping are a bit weird then because they are absolutely TOXIC
@EyeSeeThruYou
@EyeSeeThruYou Жыл бұрын
@Alpine_flo92002 I'm thinking our definitions of "toxic" diiffer here, where it becomes a more "relative" situation. For example, I'm a field ecologist and educator and when comparing mammalian and avian droppings, the avian droppings are more acidic, and some species' droppings do also have strong, unpleasant odors, namely carnivorous birds and especially those consuming fish. But there are lowered and less virulent organisms present in avian dropping which can vector diseases and parasites to me. Mammalian droppings, on the other hand, are laden with microbes and parasites (microbes and worms), and those organisms are often virulently zoonotic and highly pollutive in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. For me (and this may sound somewhat comical), it's that avian droppings are less likely to vector organisms which cause infection and disease through droppings than mammals because organisms further apart in the taxonomic and physiological sense carry lower probability of vectoring parasites and diseases between taxonomic Classes of organisms. Probably more than you wanted to know, but there it is 😁

If you knew he wasn’t taking care of them why didn’t you go feed them yourself or if that wasn’t possible, have one of his friends or family help feeding them? I mean if you absolutely knew this, how could you NOT report him, get help for them as I suggested or even take them to a farmer who generally don’t mind taking in more chickens they don’t eat much more probably than their flock. Somethings off here? In my mind you didn’t try to help them either. Please don’t commit to animals particularly chickens if you can’t even arrange to take them somewhere to rehome the poor things. Sad 😔

Just for anyone wanting to introduce new chickens to your pre-existing Flock, I'd always recommend setting up a covered fenced-in area or a large dog kennel etc with your chickens you are trying to integrate into the flock so that they can be separate but for about a week or so they can get used to each other through the bars.

I have 2 house chickens. They are survivors of a very large farm flock being 13 years old this December 2023. They just out lived their flock and it was too cold last winter for them in the mobile coop. So I brought them inside and they use a parrot roost. And I traded the coop to a friend. They go into the yard when they want to. A good plastic tarp under the roost goes out and gets hosed off every day. They're the best little house mates!

Quails aren’t suitable pen mates for chickens. They have very different needs and can lead to a lot of issues. Quails are far more flighty and need smaller pens (and cannot be free ranged), but chickens do best in opposite conditions. Chickens are also known to bully and get too rough with quails; especially a rooster that decides he’s gonna get friendly with the ladies. He’ll be too big and could easily seriously maim the smaller quail hens. They also have different dietary needs. All you need to do is throw him in with chickens at night. Use food in the morning and let the pecking order sort it out, if it’s particularly bad where he’s coming away with wounds, you need to seperate him with the most dominant chook. That will restructure the pecking order and when returned will hopefully change enough that he won’t be solely bullied, since he’ll have a friend and the order will have changed.
