So I got to Herman early and had time to walk down the L'Anse Hill northbound. I climbed the rock cut and picked my spot-too many trees for clear viewing but I was happy with the result anyway! Then it was on to Tama Siding where I knew I had a couple hours to kill so I went for a ride in Herman Hills. I only saw two loggers the whole time I was in the area -from 8:30 to 1! Some nice reds appearing and getting us ready for the color season! The Soo Line bridge walk was from Monday and a spur of the moment decision. The tracks are still there for a long ways to the west but US 41 is where the tracks end to the NE. THe ties are getting spongy and I was hesitant to walk far out on the bridge since noone knew I was there! Last but definitely not least-God Bless our fallen from 911 and never forget! Our freedom can be taken away in a nano second! God Bless those who serve in any capacity! God Bless the USA~!

Great catch of the L'Anse Local heading toward L'Anse, Michigan with a loaded train through one of the rock cuts on the line near Herman, Michigan. Because you were located above the tracks, we had to opportunity to see the old ties in the gondola cars. Thank you for adding the last portion of the video of the abandoned Soo Line trackage and the bridge over the Sturgeon River. Those were date nails that you found in the ties. They are used to record the date when the tie was laid. (Posted 11 September 2024 at 1817CDT.)

Long ago I was sleeping Ina sleeping bag on the shore of the portage canal. Mid morning the Hiawatha traveled north along the canal thru Houghton and into handcock crossing the lift bridge. Fantastic memories.

Hi Nancy, I was just wondering if you are having the same extra warm weather I am down here under the bridge? It's been over 80° for a week and they say my neck of the woods is going to be about 10° over the average until Sunday the 22nd with no rain. I vividly recall when I was about 8 my Dad took me and my 2 brothers to Big Bay and we fished out on Lake Superior for a week. It was this time of year, although I don't remember being pulled out of school, and the weather was warm, sunny and dry. The lake was as flat as a pancake so we used the "camp boat," a 10' Aluminum Pram and a 1.5 hp Neptune outboard motor out there. We had fish following our lures, but none would bite but it was so much fun! Warm sun, and sand on Squaw Beach, but shivering cold good old Lake Superior! It was a rare moment as there were no bugs to speak of. It's always been a secret plan of mine to try my luck out there again, and this would probably be a great year, but I have a sick doggy. She's getting better, so I'll give up my secret plan to spend time with her instead. Thank you for taking me along and I do hope you are having some of this extra nice weather up there in Der UP Eh! ben/ michigan

Nancy, love these yoop vids, but I just don't know why big CN would keep the L'Anse line instead of selling it to a smaller carrier. Somebody like Lake State or Grand Elk. Unless it's subsidized. Love the kids, though. Takes me home.❤

Anyone have an idea of the last time a train ran on that Soo Line track?

In the late 1990's fan trips were the last trains to go over these rails!

When you look upon a rock cut short of a little erosion nothing has changed here since it was built and that was truly the manual way with a horse and wagon your best helper Both of the trains looked more like coal trains with all the hoppers in the consist. That inbound train had three distinct car groupings that passed by the Mallard Duck camera in the Fox River Valley before they got up your way. The hike to the bridge was appreciated because you had great views every direction. I kept looking at those tires wondering why they look so different and I think the answer is they haven't seen a train for 30 years but they have seen 30 years plus of both ATVs and snowmobiles which gradually eat away at the wood Anna gets worn down. Glad you had good weather to take these hikes
