Part one of our visit to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. WE actually did not get to revisit the museum as we were invited to ride the 1966 steel Sooline Caboose to Two Harbors. It was very enjoyable and I was invited to start up the engine the next day and ride in the cab again but as luck would have it my husband became ill and we had to go home. Part two has switching and train talk among the crew and is coming up in a couple days! Can't wait to go back!

About 13 years ago I road the Budd motorcar round trip between Duluth and Two Harbors and got to spend time riding in the cab. Good times and memories.

They need to put a flat car next to the caboose so you can see better. Nice video!

The Cupola was best and sitting on the platform-on a sweatshirt for comfort was great-especially when the train picked up speed.

Thank you for this video. I'm so glad to see someone else loves riding in caboose like I do. We have a caboose similar where I am a member at the Kentucky Railway museum. I actually live in an Illinois central extended porch caboose on my farm, a couple of days each week. I'm acquiring a bay window caboose to go with it next week. I will be posting videos of the caboose moving as it happens. If you're ever in Kentucky, feel free to visit.

Hi Nancy. glad you enjoying your vacation. I too have ridden in a caboose. This was in Wales at the Brecon Mountain railway which is narrow gauge using former narrow gauge american steamers. Caroline

In the Late 1960's my friends and I were able to ride Passenger Trains around western Minnesota. We could take the Dakotan up the Dakota Division of Great Northern, to Fargo. Then walk down Main Street to the NP Depot and catch a Mainstreeter to Detroit Lakes We would visit the Soo Line Crossing Tower and discuss important events with the Operator, then catch a Soo Line Train to Alexandria, enabling a return ride Home on the Winnipeg Limited. The services of the Soo to accommodate Passenger travel, were provided in a Caboose just like that one. It was adequate and the Crews were generally nice Humans. The ability to ride the old Dakota Division has long since become a Bike Trail. We can only hope for a return of Rail Travel as the Economy deteriorates. The services they offered are much easier to relax in, than the use of Cars that seem to become unpleasant.

What an adventure! The passenger trains are long gone here and rails will be picked up sometime this year. Our local chamber of commerce has no vision!

Thank you, Nancy, for taking us on this ride in the Soo Line caboose from Duluth, Minnesota to Two Harbors, Minnesota. I enjoyed watching the passing scenes as we rode along the rails. I am looking forward to Part 2. I wonder what we might see on the return trip. (Post 30 July 2024 at 2041 CDT.)

Always an interesting View of the Duluth Harbor area as you leave. It always brings back memories of the mid-70s when I first saw this area and all the railroad yards that were in the area. There was something about a SOO Line caboose whether the older wooden ones or the bright white cars. Think of the generator car as a mechanical reefer regarding the noise. We actually had this happen on a trip on the Wisconsin and Calumet years ago when the cars had generator.problems

Back in the 70s my father and I got to ride in a wide vision compromise caboose from Shawano to Crandon. We had to ride in the armored lower area because a crew member had been killed when Native Americans shot at the train in the Keshena area. The ICC forced the SOO Line to maintain passenger service on the line untill the late 70s. The line was abandoned and ripped up in the early 2000s. I've taken the Two Harbors ride about ten times over the years behind Duluth and Northern 14, SOO Line 1003 and 2719, Hustle Muscle and a few other engines and it never gets old. My good friend Joel Halminiak was a conductor on the line for many years until his untimely death from esophagial cancer. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

In a town in WV at the entrance to a closed off mine sits a N & S caboose it's not part of a display or museum it was left there. It is I believe at the time I looked inside o yes it's not locked a homeless person was living in it as fresh food, water bottles and a clean blanket draped over a up right chair as a bed. I will not reveal where as I don't want any looky loos to invade the city.

as a shelter and a place to live and sleep but no a/c or heat a half a home. Surprised N & S left it there. Took a quick look as I had never been inside a caboose. Was lucky to get a ride in a locomotive from a port in SC to a drop line near CSX main line the train took loads of paper to the main line and returned with tanker cars of a slurry call kaolin used in paper production. A ship would arrive with paper rolls then would return with the kaolin to a paper mill in Canada

I recently found out that N & S gifted the caboose to the city a number of years ago and a couple purchased it to turn it into a restaurant I don't think it will last as the town is under 250 people.
