Prey and Hokanson were friends for many years. This amazing Liederkreis surely stands apart. Truly, like Kipnis and Dichterliebe these are treasured performances. They open a wholly new experience of Schumann's lied and, like Greindl and The Winterreisse reach into the very soul of the composer.

"In der Fremde" singt Herrman Prey gleich am Anfang einen ganz falschen Rhythmus. Es hört nicht genügend auf das Klavierpartner, lässt sich nicht tragen und ist andauernd zu spät. Nein, so kann und darf man nicht Schumann singen. Die Stimme ist natürlich außergewöhnlich geschmeidig geführt, aber sie klingt auch immer etwas verschnupft, der typische Preysound. eben. Ein großer Liedersänger war er gewiss nicht, aber ein großer Opernsänger!
