1:10 about the glass I like having my tortoise in a enclosure with glass because we can see if he’s ill and what he’s doing at all times (he’s in our living room)
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
They are typically stressed by all glass enclosures, and you should be able to see what he does at all time even in a pen...

Glass usually means aquarium. Often Too much heat trapping your tort in too much heat full time. A temp gradient necessary. Tort needs cool, private, dry, option in same habitat. Use heat gun to ensure temp gradient across your pen/enclosure. Really, torts need space, natural sun and natural foods with good fiber offered like Timothy Hay. Inside habitat very possible but not aquariums. On KZbin check out Garden State Tortoise for everything tortoise for any kind of tort! Watch 10 of Chris & Casey Leone’s lifetime of Tortoise anything vids and serve your torts correctly.

4 years later, but still I like this kind of videos. Just one comment: stay clear of words such as "never" or "must", I have noticed with time that they are very subjective. I know people here in Germany who would literally killl you if you dare not induce them to hibernate. Stil in nature there have been tortoises found not hibernating (for whatever reason), and in Israel there is a whole community of Tostudo Graeca Terrestris who do not hibernate. Hibenation is not sleeping, it's nature's solution for animals to survive the harsh winters (cold, food shortage, etc.), there have been studies about animals getting used to not hibenating when conditions are spring-like at worst (and they don't lose their procreation cabailities). Many newborns in nature also die during the first hibernation (or second or third), this is why some experts recommend not necesserily to put them to "Winterstarre". But if you even nention that in Germany, better don't show your face in public for a long time. As for a water bowl - all depends on the experience and on the individual animal. If you feed them with wet leaves (emphasis on WET), there is no real need for a water bowl, unless the indivitual tortoise you are raising got used to having one. I do have a water bowl, and my tortoise NEVER touches it. In nature they also don't have it, most specimens will never find water sources rather than in plants. As for the ground, Testudo Hermanni lives in accross lots of types of habitats, unless you know the exact sub-species and even community of the specimen you have at home, there is no point to recommend on type of soil to be used. And anyhow they will get used to whatever you give them. My tortoise I have right now which I understand is a T.H.H from the wastern coast of Spain, is a very avid digger, he needs the type of soil where he can dig and dig his way out on the other side. So the type of soil I provide hhim cannot be what you have. That doesn't mean that yours is a big NO-NO, which is the same for sand, given that many T.H.H in Sardinia and T.H.B live in sandy habitats. So it all depends on many factors. One thing I do agree, though, food should be green, green and diverse (and non-poisonous of course). In the case of Tortuga Graeca, which nornally receives pretty much the same recommendations, there are communities of some subspecies (T.G.T) which feed in nature on friuts relatively more than others, but for T.H only greens are recommended. Good video, though, strong like.

Worth noting that the water isn't only for drinking and hygienic purposes - but also to moderate their body temperatures as they are ectothermal animals. So it's actually VERY important they have a water source as well as something they can dig down into to reduce their body temperatures and act as a means of shelter. They also need a fair bit of calcium supplements if your local fauna has a poor calcium to phosphorous ratio - which ideally should be 4:1 - and in some places can be 1:4 which is very bad for the turtle.

We took in my aunts eastern hermann tortoise about a year ago with very short notice and kept her conditions the same as before, besides getting a new wooden table, and listened to my aunts advice but we recently noticed that shes growing and could barely fit through her wooden hidey hole like she used to so i did my research and have found out everything were doing is wrong. Her table is about 1.5ft by 2.5ft and her substrate is a mix of sand and bark, we feed her a handful of lettuce everyday and she just isnt getting the proper care at all. we dont have the space for a huge house and i dont know what to do. would it be best to find her a new home with an experienced reptile owner or can she manage with her small house now? shes 5 and i am worried that she will outgrow it. the best we really do for her is give her a cuttle bone and dandelion leaves in the summer, we dont even clean out her water that regularly. i hate that i didnt do my own proper research sooner and feel really sorry for her. we can easly change her substrate but im really concerned about how much space she has. i feel awful about it and just want the best for her.

I don't think it's a definite thing really, likely a combination of all things really
@kalebmoore29458 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is linked to pyramiding too, but it isn't just one thing that can cause it. Improper diet, low humidity, too much calcium, too little calcium, improper UVB, genetics, and I'm sure there are others. Torts take in water thru their cochlea/tail,…and their mouth. Torts know the lay of their land. They explore, they know. Manually submerging your tort daily promotes defecation. Torts healthy defecation on their terms healthier. Torts know where the water is. I offer larger bathing pan of water,…and smaller water troughs they drink from by mouth. Pyramiding occurs from too much protein but primarily, and more typical, dehydration your torts better cause for their carapace deformations. Clean water by mouth and for body required….AND best on your torts terms not your forced or chosen daily dunks.

Hey, your from Alberta or Manitoba right? Lol I love finding people who have the same interests as me that live in my country. Except I live in southern Ontario, so it’s a little warmer down here. Lol.

You said that they are from desert, i can say that they are not and i say that because i am a Greek and i live in Greece (Greece is not really like a desert) and i have seen their habitats and they also don't have sand (that because you mentioned that nobody should have them in a sand substrate)

When I say desert, I mean on the more arid side of things. I'd love to see some photos if you feel like sharing.

Hi Michael, or graphic Phoenix, I am trying to find a tortoise I should buy. I found this website called tortoisesupply.com I found this hatchling hermann's tortoise, and I want to know if this is an ok one. I like Greek or Egyptian tortoises because they stay small. There are Greek tortoises on the website. I want to know if it looks healthy. www.tortoisesupply.com/baby-hermanns-tortoise-eastern-b-grade/

I also live right next to Arizona, so this might be my best bet. The other one is in Nevada, and I live just east of Nevada, north-east of Las Vegas, and North of the Arizona tortoise compound, so it'll be most likely to arrive alive, right?
