Terrific review :) It has given me new respect for this one - onto my 2nd 15ml bottle and approaching it as a 'sweet violet flower' rather than the full on (beautiful) violet in Mona di Orios Violette Fumé or the bold leather / osmanthus pairing of Lutens Daim Blond makes sense. It's a lovely, low key piece of work. Fascinating story about the long lost leather discovery. I remember about 10 / 15 years ago that some vintage leather had turned up, maybe the same source, and there was an extremely limited supply for bespoke shoes (out of my price range) from, I think, George Cleverly in London (?). The sort of thing John Lobb / Hermes could have had fun with! Great review, thanks.

I think this is a great addition to the Hermessence line. One of the better ones I'd say.... I love the way this slightly dirty leather accord blends so seamlessly with the delicate smell of violet flowers. It's glorious and lustrous, it literally shimmers on my skin. I'm thinking of getting myself a bottle for Christmas 😇

Looks like Hermès has just jacked its Hermessence prices up 10% in January 2024. At least on the John Lewis website the 100ml price just jumped from £225 to £248 in the last few days and there is a corresponding increase in the price of the 200ml.

Gosh, 10% is quite a jump.

i cannot wait to test this in person ! cuir d’ange is the only full bottle i’ve bought from the hermessences line so far. and i will have to contradict you concerning santal massoïa : it is an absolute clinger on me & is not soft at all. it shares top spot with cuir d’ange - i did not get a FB only because my travel sized cuir d’ange ran out & i decided it would be of more value to get a large bottle once & for all. one of my other top beloved leather scents is cuir de russie (not sure if you recall, my edt predates les exclusifs) & i love violet fragrances too (insolence, misia, aimez-moi), apart from other floral-leather combinations (i wore kelly-calèche for a good while back in the day, and still do so occasionally now). so happy there’s finally an exciting release to look forward to discovering ! c nagel has been rather hit or miss for me. i don’t remember galop very well & need to test on skin (only had a blotter experience ages ago) but aside from the original twilly that i really like, nothing else she’s done has drawn me in.

Violet and leather just works. Concerning the venerable Jean Claud Elena (per your mention) he certainly has a talent and penchant for incorporating a certain marked “raunchiness” in a many of his compositions IMO.

I have really been looking forward to this as I do love and own an item in Hermes Volynka leather. I get Violet, I get a bit of Leather and some Apricot and Osmanthus. I think it doesn't have half enough Russian Leather for me and that's probably the commercial bit, sorry! I absolutely love and wear Kelly Caleche, Galop and Cuir d'Ange. Also have to add Cuir d'Ange was supposedly inspired by a piece of suede from their archives and it does remind me of my Doblis suede bags. Thank you for the review.

I smelled this perfume a few weeks ago and like you it made me think both of Galop and Cuir d'Ange. For its suede, soft textured leather and its floral aspects. It is gorgeous. I wasn't a fan of Cuir d'Ange when it came out (I didn't find it as soft as described), but smelling it again when smelling Violette Volynka, I found it much softer than I recalled. And more floral. I'm happy that you found similarities both with Galop and Cuir d'Ange. Some SA from Hermès looked at me in a very surprised way when I drew the comparison. Maybe she thought I implied this release wasn't necessary? ;-) Which I did not. But it is not very innovative indeed.

I just got my full bottle today after trying the travel size long enough, it’s a relatively airy animalistic leather while the sweetness balm like violet smells like an undercurrent of it, I think it’s rare in the market, becuz majority of this combination in the market are too heavy too oriental, I love how it’s like a black veil lightly cover your head instead of the feeling of being “attacked” by waft after waft of leather violet smell, but the drawback is it’s not as long lasting (at least to me) which need to be reapplied by noon
@Persolaise2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this. The scent is very much beginning to grow on me.

It was nearly impossible for me not to like this. I am a declared violet lover, a big fan of Christine Nagel's work and I particularly like Galop. To my nose this one has traits of Ellena's Hermes signature. Its leather, though darker, reminds of Cuir d'Ange's soft and supple suede structure more than of Galop's dark leather character. I find the way in which Mme.Nagel connects the violet to the leather accord quite Ellena inspired too. There is a clear watery note that gives this perfume a certain lightness and a perfumey touch to the gorgeous violet note. It seems to me that the floral nature of the violet is highlighted by it instead of being darkened by the leather notes. This is not a boudoir leaning powdery perfume and I don't get any similarities with Misia, Lipstick Rose or other perfumes in that vein. It is a very realistic floral violet with only a bit of sweetness which maintains an olfactory sort of conversation with a supple brown leather. Both of them, in all their modern beauty, seem to agree on the art deco theme they are reinterpreting.
@Persolaise2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this, Heinke. Yes, it’s an interesting take on violet, and as you say, quite far away from the likes of Misia.
@L-Ondee2 жыл бұрын
Nice to know that we agree 😁 (besides the Ellena part it seems). Btw I personally am just as happy with interpretations of a classic theme with a twist as with new bold compositions.( I wish there were a lot of convincing complex and subtle works anyway. In case I appear snobbish, I can live with that. In the end I have learned from you that I should be, when it comes to perfume.) It takes quite a bit of savoir faire when a perfumer places themself in the near vecinity of Germaine Cellier or Ernest Daltroff, does well while doing so, AND creates a successful contemporary work of art in the process. Quite a challenge!
@L-Ondee2 жыл бұрын
And "nice to know" that we agree on Christine Nagel today on Instagram too. 😁

I´m extremely addicted to Violette Volynka. I visited a Hermes store to buy the Twilly Ginger (which I know you didn´t quite like haha) and they proposed a try of Volynka. This scent is definitely luxurious and it makes you feel expensive. Because I expressed my enthusiasm for this perfume, the employee gave me 2 large samples and tried them on my skin, clothes, and hair. I just love to smell it. Yet, the price range is too high so if I decide to buy it, I will use it on special occasions!

I thought this perfume was fabulous. I found it quite fruity, and the leather accord reminded me of a leather accord in Tom Ford's Ombre leather and Nassamatto Blamage. I think Nagel is doing a good job, I loved her cedre sambac too. I found Ellena to focus on one note or accord. Nagel seems to focus on blending two notes or accords. Slight difference and approach to the Hermessence style of complexity disguised as simplicity.

By the way, I love Bottega Veneta signature fragrance and Cuir d'Améthyste von Armani Privé which I find quite similar. They seem more refined compared to Violette Volynka where the leather though suede-like is still a bit more harsh than the leather accord in those former ones.

Christine Nagel's style for Hermès is indeed much less "water-colored' than Jean-Claude Ellena's creations for the brand. Overall, her fragrances seem more potent and diffusive, also more modern in a certain way. I feel that they are less blended but work more in "block contrasts" which I find more modern because nowadays perfumes are build in a less harmonious and seamless way than before. Because of change in taste, ingredients regulations, vanishing of some famous smooth bases?...

Volynka is NOT " a type pf Russian leather"! Volynka is an INSTRUMENT, an ancient UKRAINIAN instrument, a kind of a bagpipe - also called "duda". Poles also have it I believe. This uneducated custom to assign anything east of Germany to "Russian" is so tacky it isn't funny anymore. 🙄
@Persolaise4 ай бұрын
Thanks very much for this. If this is true, I wonder if they found some Russian leather and simply decided to call it ‘volynka’ for some reason.
