When they come up, question why, deny ever having said anything, and send them back downstairs (bonus points if they start ignoring the messages, cause then when you actual call them up they won't believe it)

Grian, the command is “/trigger custom_model_data 1”. I know from the S9 world download. You have to have a specific item in your hand for it to give the permit though. (For permits, it is paper). If that does not work, change the 1 to some other positive number. It’ll work at some point.

What I feel would make the permit office better: - A lamp thats on a simple redstone clock that flickers on and off - A fake floor at the bottom of the stairs that drops you into one of those item frame map rooms - Knocking in the Please Hold song (this one might be a little too much) - The song fading in and out like it is being put in and out of water - A skeleton skull or two to bring the ambience of the waiting room up - Those glass shields in between the employee and the guest with the little opening at the bottom to pass things - One of those number signs that announces the number - Water dripping from the ceiling and a bucket (cauldron) to catch it - A cup with the pen that has an obnoxious flower (this could be done using a flower pot) - One of those silly posters like "TEAMWORK it makes the dream work", "DID YOU APPLY FOR DIAMOND INSURANCE? See how you can apply today" That's all I got for now

If people have nothing to look at their mind will make something up for them, but if they have 1 mundane thing to look at, it will drive them crazy.

Grian, what you need to do is colour code each line in the permit office to be for a different service (Permit renewal, permit creation, permit disputes, whatever you want) so when someone walks into one line for a new permit, you can tell them to wait in the other line until you're ready to serve the next person in that line.

I think the waiting room should be a bit run-down, to achieve the full backrooms look. A couple ceiling panels missing, some blotches of yellow on the floor, some drywall peeling, etc. I think a looping music disc with fluorescent light buzzing would add to the atmosphere as well.

Okay im not super musically inclined and also days late but just as someone who likes liminal horror, if you want some more ideas about how to make the song less anxiety inducing and more just generally unsettling, my thoughts: - instead of adding more instruments, have the instruments drop out (ie, sudden a capella) and restart at times that don't match the lyrical phrasing - add just like. slight wind or water drop sounds after a certain point - slowly reduce tempo, only by like 15 bpm max, then abruptly reset it when the phrase restarts - slow descresendos and crescendos - quiet static overlay that gets louder when music gets quieter and less quiet when music gets loud

Fun idea: 1. Lead every Hermit to the Permit office by making up random “issues” with their shops. Make everyone experience the glory of the Permit office and make everyone hate it, make everyone shiver at the thought of being on hold. 2. Have skulk sensors that activate the song randomly placed around the map. This will make the fellow Hermits feel like the Permit office is inescapable, like it follows them everywhere just to torment them. 3. Start selling therapy lessons under the name “Grien”. Market these as the best way to finally escape the Permit office. 4. Use the exact same tactics as you used with the Permit office. I actually love the backrooms vibe in the waiting room. I would love to see you go deeper into it. If the floor was made out of snow you could put down patches of powdered snow that drops you down into an actual backrooms with wide open waiting rooms, stairwells to nowhere, libraries of filing cabinets with obscure forms, hallways of out of order restrooms/drinking fountains, etc. I would prefer running into a warden than to drop into an endless government office building.

Improvements for the permit office. - Make a real entrance... It's 100 blocks away disguised as an outhouse, with signs pointing to it saying "The entrance is 50 blocks ----->" so people have to triangulate it. The entrance leads to a deep dark hole that you fall down that leads to a well lit hall that slowly goes dark, the floor is covered in pressure plates that might occasionally play the sound of tnt being primed. The tunnel leads to a nether portal that will plop them down in a maze, the maze has piglin brutes that, using carpet magic, can't actually kill anyone, but will scare them. And a sign telling them to follow the yellow brick road to reach the end of the maze. (the yellow brick road is a road of honey blocks that will take a very roundabout way of getting to the exit portal.) The exit portal leads to a back storage room with empty file cabinets, lots of cobwebs, maybe one or two dead bodies from former employees who got lost in the file maze and people who died waiting for their number to be called. Finally they climb up a ladder and exit through one of the paintings into the permit office. Where they can then take a number and wait to be called.

The "Downstairs Waiting Room" needs a lot of asymmetrical walls just scattered around to really capture the eerie-ness of the Backrooms, as Joel was more just depressed and not exactly unsettled by it's design. You could also try to create a tiny gap in the wall somewhere that shows another room where you could put maybe like a painting of the Backrooms monster (the thin guy, idk what he's called) off in the distance!
