Etho is lowkey a proper indie game developer. Don't get fooled by this being just Minecraft redstone contraptions. He's doing everything a game developer does, exactly like they do it. Even down to ad-hoc solutions, code comments (signs on the redstone with explanations), and the stage fright when it's near to the release date, but you haven't had enough time to test everything properly. I cannot explain how much I enjoy seeing this rendition of the craft that fills me with so much passion. Bravo!

Another Etho episode lets go! The game is really coming together now, it really is looking fantastic. One thing I will say is it feels like it's very easy to get more froglights from the game then paying with diamonds, just getting 10 points gives 40 froglights in comparison to 1 diamond being 24 froglights, and I don't feel like it would be incredibly difficult to get 5-10 points. Obviously if you don't mind actually giving out alot of froglights then it's not a big deal. Keep up the great work Etho!

Thanks! It is by design. I want playing the game to be more rewarding than just buying from the shop. (So that my efforts building the game don't go to waste.) The break even point is 6 points in the game, which is about what you get for getting across 1 time. I think that will be the average run. I expect a lot of the Hermits will get 0 points their first few games with maybe a couple outliner players getting more.

Bit long but some thoughts regarding the directions, as someone who has also faced the pain of writing clear/consice game instructions that no one wants to read: 1. In terms of the gameplay instructions, you could possibly specify more that the gates close *individually* with something like "*Each* gate closes after each success/a successful run," or "Each gate closes after it is reached/entered," rather than "these gates," which can imply they close all together (as a whole) and may confuse people at first. 2. Then perhaps "*Reaching* all 5 gates grants 1 extra life, and *re*opens gates again/oncemore" just so the quick succession of "closing" and "opens" as antonyms doesn't trip anyone up, tho the use of "reopen" alone may be enough to help this. Or more specifically "reopens gates for next level/round" or even "reopens gates to continue game/continue playing" to specify the game will continue and they haven't actually "beaten" it (tho these versions iare probably too long sadly). 3. You could also simplify the scoring explanation down to "The timer counts down during each life/run. Score is based on the total speed/timer count(total?) of each (successful) run." There are perhaps some other parts you could shorten, such as the frog coins part, to make room for the more particular parts, but I don't want to ramble on too much. 4. This is more of a formatting thing but you may be able to just bold or color certain key words to insure people pay attention to them, such as "set spawn" in How to Play, or"total speed" and "final score" in Gameplay. Also I swear, every time I see the item return section I stress out before remembering who will actually be playing the game. Ive just had so many instances were players simply thought a game was broken because there was nothing explicitly saying "press the singular button in this empty room to continue playing," and they didn't think to do it themselves. Player testing really just makes one lose faith man 😭 but anyway, for the most part it's totally fine and this can be completely ignored, especially since I don't know the hermtis and how they actually process things personally.

One way to increase the difficulty in a consistent manner is to close and open the gates on a timer. For example, after successfully rescuing the first set of 5 frogs, you can start closing one gate at a time in 1-second intervals. Close the 1st gate for a second, reopen 1st and close 2nd, reopen 2nd and close 3rd, and so on in a looping manner. Rescuing the 10th frog would be trickier, since the gate will close for 1 second every 5 seconds! This can even increase for each set of frogs rescued. After the 2nd set you can close 2 gates at a time, and so on until only one gate is open for 1 second at a time. And after they rescue some frogs, there will even be times when no gates are open and they have to time it so they reach the gate as it opens! It will hopefully make it hard without making it seem completely RNG.

Etho, the problem with your chunk loaders - The portals need to be three blocks wide. Droppers can give sideways momentum to items they shoot, and if the portal is 2 wide, the items can hit against the dropper on the other side of the portal, instead of going in the hopper. The amount of stuff done in this episode is deceiving! I’m impressed with the editing because everything felt cohesive, like everything was done in one session, but this must have been days or even weeks worth of footage condensed down into ~58 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed it as always!

55:31 It seems to me there's an issue with the lives counter being incremented if you get through a gate, as you shouldn't have run out of lives here. You were successful three times and only failed twice, yet all five lives were used up.

My favorite part of this game is how simple the concept is, but how insanely detailed it became and how thoroughly Etho executed it. Really makes me want to make a Minecraft "game engine" where I gather/design blueprints for common game elements, turn them into a generic game board, and then different games that use those same elements can use the board structure to implement their exact game. For example Doc's doing Poker, and if there was a more general solitaire engine in Minecraft, I would lose my whole goddamn mind. Imagine having this exact game layout but with a parkour stage on the inside. You could build the structure with the logic and displays from a schematic, and then design the course however you wanted! Even down to changing the music track. Imagine incorporating one of those programmable noteblock machines some madlads have created! This is, by the way, exactly how the development of electronics went. People designed custom circuits for the exact thing they wanted, then when general processors came to be, they switched to writing software to define what they wanted. If Minecraft computers keep getting smaller and easier to build and were able to grow more abstraction, people could literally create their games through code. And given how this game has actually grown an interest in electrical engineering and circuitry among a bunch of young nerds, a world where Minecraft had logic gate blocks or even more complicated things like timers, adders, all the way up to using something like Python to interact with in-game blocks and elements, the interest and base skill level in programming would absolutely skyrocket. Just imagine how many people can understand the basics of redstone. Imagine now that those people can also understand the basics of a whole logic block. "Oh so this door needs to be open __or__ this pressure plate needs to be pressed to pull this piston? Oh I can just say in this skulk sensor that it only triggers if detects(player_footsteps or player_dying)? With good and easy to access documentation, good tab complete, etc, Minecraft could define actual baseline understanding of programming to the masses. Given that they're owned by Microsoft, it seems like this would be something they want to do. Here's hoping the game gets more and more powerful, and general purpose microcontrollers for advanced projects become more and more feasable!

It's awesome how many details you sorted out, it feels like such a polished experience and is truly perfect in that it flawlessly does everything you intended it to do. You nailed it! The only thing you could do to make the game better at this point is duplicate everything and make level two, which is to say, the game is complete!

56:46 what would a player do if they came into the game with a completely full inventory and scored coins? they cant just leave items in the chest because obviously the door wont open. idk, maybe im just missing something obvious 😅 proud of you etho!!!! so happy to see that frogger is done! i cant wait to see the hermits playing it

It's a double chest not a single one, there should be enough space.
@phoenixprker2 ай бұрын
@@Roescoe I'm not talking about space in the chest, im talking about space in the hermits inventory. if they came in with a full inventory, and then recieve coins, they do not have enough inventory space to grab all their items as well as the coins. I suppose they could just leave items sitting on the flooror carry something in their offhand, but idk it was something to consider

DROPPING EVERYTHING, HE'S BACK
@miata_panda2 ай бұрын
@Etho I've used the same style of chunk loaders that drop items through the portal in my SMP server. I've noticed that they have a higher chance of breaking when the server resets. It might be due to the items being in a bad state right at the reset (i.e. stuck in a dropper instead of a hopper). I haven't fixed it but I added a redstone lamp that turns off to indicate my chunk loader is broken. I used a pulse extender attached to a comparator that looks at the dropper to make sure that the dropper has an item every few seconds (however long it takes to shoot an item and return it). Theoretically you could hook this up to a safe reset circuit too where you shoot out an extra item when the dropper is at a deficit of items, but at least for me, my chunk loader breaks if it has two items cycling instead of one between the portals.

It might be a good idea to mention to the hermits that to play the game, they have to die. This might be important for somebody who is hoping to save their levels or something similar.
@patricksocha69302 ай бұрын
I think the knowledge of having to die at least 5 times to end the game should be sufficient enough for them to realize that if they don't want to lose levels, they shouldn't play the game.

considering how many exp farms there are on the server. I'm sure it doesn't really matter 99% of the time (unless they want a funny number or smt)
@AdamMadam02 ай бұрын
Hey Etho, thrilled that Ravager Rush is completed! I had a few ideas of possible additions, although the game is perfect regardless. I just wanted to share. 1. While the timer is above 0, introduce a chance of dropping frog coins and/or froglights at random places in the arena (maybe even a rare chance for a key). If they rescue a frog with the items in their inventory, they will be auto-collected. This also means if they die the items will drop on the ground and could still be in play if they have lives left! (or they want to buy another run before the 5 minute timer is up!) 1a. Add a button in the observer area that occasionally lights up while someone is playing. The observer can press the button to trigger additional drops from suggestion #1. 2. Highlight one of the 5 frogs as a "bonus" frog. Saving the bonus frog will give an improved reward. 3. Add an easter egg with a secret combination of 1-2-3-4-5 (in any order). If a hermit rescues all 5 frogs in one game in that order, they get a secret item. 4. Make the area above the player's starting area an observation deck for some frog entities. I don't expect you to implement, or even read, any of this. I've gotten plenty of joy from watching you work on this project and can't wait to see other Hermits play it!
