That map is incredible! Just 'wasted' a couple of hours wandering about on it and cross-checking it against tube and Google maps It is at the same time, both the most interesting map I've ever used and the most confusing! I discovered a return loop on the Northern for instance, that I didn't know existed (just south east of Embankment - partly under the river!). Also, the 'Fleet Line' tunnels that extend beyond Charring Cross towards Strand station go much further than I thought - they practically reach the station! But, as I result of my 'lost' two hours, I've revised my view on the Brixton overrun tunnels (see below) - I now agree they were only going to one place, and that was Herne HIll. Whilst they could have gone on to Wimbledon instead, it would have taken a hell of a tight turn, and, anyway, the Wimbledon/Morden area is already pretty well served with lines, so I don't really see the point. The other thing about the overrun tunnels is they end at an electricity sub-station, which makes me wonder if that's why they are as long as they are - they more or less had to go there. Or was the sub-station built there because the tunnels were already planned to go that far (and further)? I've always been aware (of course!) that the 'Tube' map and reality are at significant odds with each other, but I'd never fully realised just how different they are until now. I'm even starting to consider whether Harry Beck's map was such a good thing! OK, as a diagram of the system, it's a work of genius and very useful for navigating, but for understanding where you are in the real London and your relationships with other places, it's a bloody nightmare! I'm now of the opinion that TFL should publish both the Beck diagram AND the 'real' map and have both available and displayed in stations. I'm sure this would make tourists' lives much easier. An example of what I mean (train nerd, rather than tourist, in this case) is the ex-Piccadilly line to Strand, and the possibilities of reopening/extending it , etc. The location of this on the (old) Beck diagrams and it's actual position are very different - even more so when you consider where it might be extended. The argument (for instance) that the Strand station is too close to the Charring Cross one doesn't hold up - they are quite far apart - nowhere as near to each other than many other Underground stations. And, looked at on Beck's diagram, you'd never guess how near the Piccadilly line is to the Strand - or where an extension of that branch would cross the river and head south (running due south, it pretty much hits Elephant and Castle). And you'd never guess how close Strand and Temple are either. Those two stations could easily be combined, so that we'd go from one closed and one under-used stations, into a combined busy interchange and destination. Add to that the possibilty of extending a branch of the Jubilee eastwards, as was originally intended, and you've got a very tempting project!

It's fairly common to do prep work for possible extensions when underground lines are being constructed, an example similar to this can be found on the New York Subway at the Norwood-205th street station on the Concourse line, the overrun tunnels there were intended for a future extension of the line that, so far has not materialized. The original extension was aborted because the City of New York found it cheaper to buy out a defunct railroad and link parts of it up to the existing network, the second disappeared in the cities 1970s financial crisis, but the tunnels remain, awaiting use.

I stayed aboard only to find myself transported down a dead end tunnel where the train stopped, a surprised driver making his way along the train via the interconnecting doors saw me and told me to sit tight until the train set off south and pulled into seven sisters again where I could disembark. This seems different to the over run tunnels described as seven sisters is not at the end of a line. What’s going on here then? I wonder if Jago could shed any light? From this track map I'm looking at, Seven Sisters does have three platforms - with 1 and 2 being the main line platforms, Platform 5 is Southbound and both 3 and 4 go Northbound, and while both platforms 3 and 4 can access the track to Walthamstow Central, only platform 4 can access the depot (and subsequently the crossover to the Southbound track). There is no dedicated reversing siding. In the above case, I'm assuming that the train used the depot access road *as* a reversing track.

In a sensible world, the Northern Line extension would have gone down the A23, relieving the Victoria line and going on to connect the Streatham stations together. Many people already bus into Brixton from this direction to change for the tube. The Victoria would then have spare capacity to head for Herne & parts beyond (Dulwich, forest hill).
@HughTerry69 Жыл бұрын
I used to live in Herne Hill and I remember how frustrating it was to take the Tube from central London to Brixton and then have to catch a bus to get home. Since the arrival of Thameslink trains, Herne Hill has already become an important interchange and a Tube connection would be even more welcome to accommodate passengers using Thameslink services. The entrance to the popular Brockwell Park is a matter of yards from Herne Hill station too. A tube link to Brixton and the West End could reduce road traffic in the Herne Hill area. I'm not sure about the 'loopy' idea - but as the distance from HH to Brixton must be less than 2 miles, and if the tunnel is already one-third complete... I say build it!

my guess is that it could have been built that way because it loosely follows the alignment of the mainline above. Maybe the thinking in 2013 was that Crossrail 2 would be built, thus relieving the Victoria line between Victoria and Euston, and freeing up capacity for a small extension. If lots of people were then to change at Herne Hill onto the Victoria Line, wouldn't that INCREASE congestion at the station, as more people getting on and off the trains would increase dwell time?

One problem with the loop line plan as presented in this video that I've only just thought of is that you'd have to run trains as if its a station in the middle of the line, i.e. with a low dwell time. This means there is almost no slack available to recover from a problem. Maybe this could be mitigated somewhat by actually building 2 through platforms on the loop. That would allow for some some extended dwell time for recovery purposes

"you'd have to run trains as if its a station in the middle of the line, i.e. with a low dwell time" That's effectively what they do with Étoile Charles de Gaulle on Ligne 6 of the Paris metro: The single platform on the loop at Étoile is treated as if it were a normal stop, and the previous/next station, Kléber, is run as the "real" terminus with slack time for recovery etc....

Not sure if loop ends for tube lines work very well - e.g. Heathrow T4. The real need for Brixton was, and is, a line going south to Brixton Hill and Streatham; stand for a few minutes by Brixton tube station entrance and watch the crowds coming out and getting on to buses which crawl off in that direction. The other need is a direct link to Clapham Junction - i.e. platforms on the Overground line at Brixton. Herne Hill is a bottleneck because of the fast trains using the double-track line; if there were a new fast line built (in tunnel, probably) there could be tube-frequency stopping trains, both on the Victoria-Bromley and Thameslink routes, taking significant traffic off the roads. Herne Hill would become an important interchange, like Finsbury Park in N London, with nice, cross-platform transfers. And passengers on the fast trains would get more quickly to Victoria - and, hey, why not continue the tunnel so that they could travel right across London to, say, the lines out of Euston or Marylebone!

As you stated the overrun tunnel at The Elephant and Castle was part of the work started on the extension to Camberwell before it was halted, likewise the Jubilee line station at Charing Cross has an overrun tunnel that almost reached Aldwych as part of the planned Fleet Line route. As I previously mentioned the main lobbying was for the line to serve Streatham which has a more significant residential/shopping traffic than Herne Hill. Would you put in the chat a link to where it is possible to obtain a copy of the map you used please.

Is Herne Hill really that far off the route to Streatham and Norbury? It looks as if it falls on a gentle curve. Or there's the cut price way of getting there by emerging on to the Network Rail line via Tulse Hill. But how much use would Herne Hill be? Trains arriving there are already going to Victoria or Thameslink, so although it's a nice-looking connection, it may not gain much.
@simoncolenutt52282 жыл бұрын
Loop line might be useful in making intensive operation more robust (I think the Victoria line is the most intensively worked rail line in the world, or close to it) But I think Herne Hill station would be overwhelmed if it went there. My preference [CRAYONS OUT] would be a double ended station where the sainsbury's is on Brixton water lane linking to Brixton Hill Road and therefore picking up passengers from two intensive bus routes. [/CRAYONS]

I forgot there was a tube line to Herne Hill. I thought it was always overground. Very Interesting

South London is poorly served by the tube. You come out of Brixton and then you have to wait for another bus which can be really crowded, unlike many destinations in London where you get out of the tube and its a quick 10 mins walk home.You need a tube line to Lewisham and another to East Croydon.

Many years ago I was told that the Victoria line was to go through the Crystal Place area. Some tunnelling was done and it caved in killing a worker/s. It was said to be haunted and many strange groans could he heard above ground. Probably piffle but .... who knows.

Maybe the Victoria Line should of extend to Herne Hill that would have a connection with GTR Thameslink and Southeastern trains as a interchange station. Plus there was a mention from London Evening Standard about plans to extend the Northern Line to extend to Clapham Junction from Battersea Power Station. And the Bakerloo Line to extend from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham, Hayes and Bromley.
@eattherich92152 жыл бұрын
Don't really see the point of extending to just one stop beyond Brixton. The Southeastern line already passes through Brixton. However, it is not where I would chose to change onto the Victoria line since it is a high level station and there is a bit of a walk to the underground. As for extending the Bakerloo line to Lewisham and beyond, I keep wondering how another set of tracks could be squeezed into the tangle of existing lines.

@eastlancsesteem2 жыл бұрын
What if the Victoria line was extended to Orpington? The Southeastern services to Victoria will be closed and the Victoria-Brixton viaduct will be demolished. The Victoria line will takeover the Southeastern to Orpington. The London Borough of Bromley will have tube stations for the very first time.
@SamSitar2 жыл бұрын
some overrun tunnels are that long. can they build the Herne Hill tube station today?
@robertnelson682 жыл бұрын
What is so weird is that currently, I am making a map that shows the potential Victoria Line extension beyond Brixton and Herne Hill. (My map shows extensions to South Croydon ~ Mainline to Walthamstow, and a branch splitting off at Herne Hill going to Bromley North.)
@robertnelson682 жыл бұрын
Taking inspiration from Finsbury Park, the Victoria Line's tracks will be superimposed under the Herne Hill North Junction for National Rail. One new LMD will be located at Grove Park, I haven't decided if there should be an LMD / TMD between Herne Hill and South Croydon...

I dont think a loop line would have cut it - at least not at Herne Hill. I do think there is a case for loops - look at the Kennington loop - they are useful for train movements. But in terms of extensions - let us look at other proposed and planned for routes across South London, you have one wing of the Northern Line publicly pushing for Clapham Junction (much needed in my mind and why on earth wasn't that the case when the Battersea extension was pushed through planning) the other branch of the line in Morden, then you have a vast swathe of "un-tubed" London. Look where they have the planned Bakerloo extension going all the way (eventually) to Lewisham and beyond, it would make a great deal of sense to have any Victoria line extension to head south towards Sydenham and Crystal Palace potentially leading to the closure of that small stub of Overground line in Crystal Palace with the line linking up with Croydon Trams at Elmers End with perhaps 6 stations at Herne Hill, West Dulwich, Sydenham, Gypsy Hill, Crystal Palace, and Anerley.
@RJSRdg2 жыл бұрын
I think the reason the Battersea extension only goes as far as Battersea comes down to finance. The Battersea extension was largely funded by the company redeveloping the power station, as having a quick route to the West End increases the value of the properties. The same can't be said for a quick route to Clapham Junction, even though it would provide good connections to a lot of places.
@paintedpilgrim2 жыл бұрын
@@RJSRdg part of that issue is the amount of work that's needed at Clapham Junction, that would need to come out of funds from both the Government via Network Rail, TfL and the train companies who use the station, it's a sticking point noone wants to be left on the hook for. There are reserved rights of way for CR2 and if they can adjust where the Overground platforms to one part if the station rather than separate platforms where they approach from opposite directions there would be room not just for the Northern line extension but additional platforms and Crossrail 2. But it would also mean redirecting lines and potentially stopping certain services during the rebuilding work. As I see it it will be a more massive version of the stoppages and platform closures that they did over christmas a couple of years ago at Waterloo.
