There is so many ways you can fake it. Mods weren’t common in that version of minecraft but definitely was possible. It’s also possible that herobrine was a legit bug in the game. They weren’t joking saying they removed him but failed multiple time to removed the herobrine. Then they finally figured it out and stopped putting it in the patch notes since he was removed. Anything is possible but we will never truly know if it was real or fake.

This happen to me one time when i was a much younger, I loaded into a minecraft world, I found floating structers in the air. Then i found the trees randomly on fire and some didnt have leaves. I started freaking out but at that time i didnt know who or what was Herobrine. I didnt see herobrine cause i left the game right away and Trees on fire and random scructures are the first signs of Herobrine so thats why i didnt see him.
