Heroes in Crisis is the antithesis to one of my favorite moments in Justice League: Unlimited. A scene where Flash confronts a mentally ill villain called The Trickster, talks him down, and convinces him to not only help the heroes, but return to the asylum and get help, all without a single punch getting thrown. HIC deals with Wally West and mental health in a much *MUCH* stupider fashion.

Okay... when I was a kid I learned a lot from the Flash’s. One of my first comic books ever was a book about the origins of DC characters and I hated it cause I only wanted to see Batman and Superman, not this ‘Aquaman’ and Wonder Woman was a girl, that was bad. But the Flash one terrified me because of how he died in it. Crisis on infinite earth mention. But after rereading it... Barry Allen taught me not to fear death. But Wally was the guy I read who helped me come to terms with a lot. I was bullied a lot cause I was autistic and I felt I had to hide a lot of myself because of various reasons. But Wally taught me I didn’t have to be scared of things because I just had to be my self. I didn’t need to be ‘Barry Allen’, Wally West taught me how to be myself. He really did change me as a human being. This book... is not only an insult to that, it is a LEGIT offensive book in terms of therapy. This book is LEGITIMATE harmful! It can make people think therapy doesn’t work and those who need it are psychos and evil because they need it. Jesus... this is the WORST event in all of DC history and I really hope they NEVER try to beat it. At least the other worse tend to not be real world dangerous to people. Also screw this book’s art. Seeing heroes have trouble dealing with their own shit, exploring the trauma they have for who they couldn't save could have made a really good character study. This was my thought as well. The CONCEPT of a mental health clinic for superheroes AND villians is actually a great concept. Funded and staffed by people vetted by Batman and staffed by ACTUAL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS isn't a horrible concept. The best parts of the comic, having read it, are when the confessions are being treated seriously by Batman for instance. A simple fix would have made this a whole lot better- staff it with medical professionals and not an AI. Obviously, it wouldn't be possible without a writer who actually understood and grasped psychological problems.
@JohnnyElRed4 жыл бұрын
Come to think of it, the only comic I know of that has treated mental disorders appropiately... is the Incredible Hulk. Seriously. Bruce Banner problems of depression and dissociative identity disorder have been the central stage of entire arcs of the comic. And can get very thoroughly explored, with a lot of nuance and tact, even. Specially now, with Immortal Hulk. To the point of Al Ewing getting letters of encouragement from people with DID. One of the things I think is a good thing in the Harley Quinn story is her realizing his toxic the Joker is and doing everything she can to distance herself from him even going so far as to give herself a new look. The Harlequin outfit is iconic, but it has such huge connections to her abusive relationship with the Joker. I like the idea that she wears the Harlequin outfit when she is with the Joker, but makes her own look when she becomes her own woman.

The fact is that Tom king really wanted to write a story about how the characters remember their darkest times in life, what it was worth to go through and overcome them. It was a very personal story for him. It was called the Sanctuary. And then Dan Didio came in and told him to do a spiritual extension of his main success as an editor, The identity crisis . That's why the story is so twisted, that's why it has the word Crisis in its title. Blame Didio, we lost a great story. King has repeatedly proved that he is a genius screenwriter, it's a pity he was not allowed to do what he is best at here.

Recent interviews from Tom King & Dan Didio suggest that most of what's wrong with this series is MOSTLY Didio's fault. He's apparently the one who INSISTED that Wally West ACTUALLY DIE (sort of) in this series because he claimed "a Flash dies in EVERY Crisis" which Linkara himself COULD prove given that he's read them and/or referenced them on his show. Didio also HATES sidekicks (both current & former) because he claims that they "complicate" DC's canon. I assume that he's just complaining about having to account for them when it comes to revising the backstories of various heroes, but that sort of thing is to be expected when writing about a SHARED FICTIONAL UNIVERSE! He's also voiced his belief in interviews that he's wanted to age DC's characters realistically & (for some reason) thinks that DC's sidekicks & former sidekicks are an obstacle to doing that for SOME reason! His ideas on "aging" DC's comic book characters already has problems of their own as well. The primary problem being that DC will NEVER FULLY RETIRE Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. no matter what & the second problem being that aging characters in comics according to real world time has ALREADY been tried & FAILED! Look up Marvel's failed "New Universe" imprint for more info there. This is just speculation on my part, but I believe Didio hijacked this miniseries & used it to lash out at fans of Wally West, sidekicks, & former sidekicks in general as well as critics of the New 52. His hatred of sidekicks & such would also explain why the Titans have gotten shafted MANY TIMES in recent years as well given how many of their members are ALSO sidekicks or former sidekicks, but admittedly that's just speculation on my part. It's very telling that these characters started getting better treatment after he left the position of editor-in-chief at DC Comics. I've heard that Wally West in particular has been handled a LOT better since he left! My apologies for the rant, but I'm honestly just trying to add my own criticisms here & NOTHING ELSE. I'm against people attacking Didio or ANY other creator myself. Criticism of their work is fine. Personal attacks & death threats AREN'T & NEVER WILL BE ACCEPTABLE!

I mean DC once actually killed Bruce Wayne and just had Dick Wayn- sorry Grayson (and perhaps Huntress, I need to seek more information about the events to confirm it) take his place as Gotham's hero and it wasn't undone until six years later during Crisis on Infinity Earths, admitedly though it happened on Earth Two instead of Earth One, but still had a share of stories after the event.

@@Leegend99 I still think that most of the fault lies with the editors. It sounded like Tom King had been in therapy so he would have a better idea on how therapy works. I'm not so sure the same can be said for the editors at DC when this story was made.
@Leegend99 Жыл бұрын
@@averagejoe5145 Sure, but as Linkara points out later in the review quoting DiDio and King, DiDio is at fault for suggesting *the characters* King should use (thus proving your point about him hating sidekicks and Wally West) but King is an idiot who didn't bother adapting the plot he had thought up (which is extremely stupid from a psychology standpoint, I showed the review to my psychology major friend and she agreed it's all offensive horsecrap) to the characters DiDio forced on him, and instead did character assassination after character assassination because he just cared about his plot and not the characters...as usual.
@averagejoe5145 Жыл бұрын
@@Leegend99 You shouldn't forget that Didio had SOME influence over the plot though. Like I said, it was HIS idea to have the nonsensical plot point about Wally West turning up dead. I'm also fairly certain that the crap about Wally West being a "symbol of hope" in the story came from Didio being frustrated over people not liking the "New 52" & fans' INSISTENCE on bringing back the old Wally West. I just can't see any reason for King to write that stuff into the story as it seems like a mean-spirited jab at the fans. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I'm too far off the mark. As for the psychology stuff, I know that what's portrayed here is all crap. I honestly don't know how much of it is King's fault & how much of it is the editors' fault. I'm honestly baffled at how poor the portrayal of therapy is in this comic.

If you wanna see "superheroes tackling mental health" better, there's a podcast called "The Bright Sessions". While not about superheroes EXACTLY, it IS about people with superpowers seeing a therapist and dealing with things that come with them--a lady who jumps through time and has severe PTSD, a high school boy with empathy struggling to figure things out, and a telepath who wants to do good with it but just needs focus. It's a really good series and an old friend of mine (who also went to therapy for a while) vouched for its validity on how it can feel when talking to a psychologist--overly casual and comes off as a bit invasive. Yes, it also gets into super-power shenanigans down the line (there's a bit with a mimic and a guy who can put thoughts into peoples' heads), but it comes about organically.

On the note of Harley escaping the Trinity, I wouldn't blame them for that. This has been a bad trope of Harley Quinn writing since she first started getting her big solo push. Essentially the character's God mode became a thing, where she can easily punk out, dodge, or beat people who logically should easily will over an unhinged normal human with above average acrobatic skills, little to no formal training, and a hammer. While I haven't seen it, I heard her solo film did this a bunch but one that I know happened was in the comic sequel to Batman & Harley Quinn, which is set in the DCAU and has her run circles around Rick Flag, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang without ever getting hit, then essentially out maneuvering Amanda Waller.

However, its destruction and people acting like it is a huge deal... doesn't really work when Sanctuary didn't really appear before this event. It may eve been vaguely mentioned at one point or another, but it never really appeared or got much of a look. We never had a status quo with it or really knew it. So its destruction and it being treated as a huge deal... falls extremely flat. Sanctuary as it was presented was a horrible idea. The place is like a checklist of how not to help a trauma victim. Isolation from support groups and actual therapists, an AI that seems to antagonize the patients and berate them for not moving on instead of talking them through their thoughts and feelings, and a simulation room that can be used to relive the trauma over and over again. It is honestly insulting that this is genuinely portrayed as an amazing safe haven for the heroes and no issue is ever brought up with how the way Sanctuary was run is what enabled the events of the story to begin with.

Even the idea of a place where Superheroes can go to therapy, without the surprisingly real threat of their therapist getting captured... ...However the idea of being treated by an AI raises a HILARIOUSLY long list of ethical questions that would take DECADES of debate to even get theories on.

"But they are not doctors. They are not trained in this area." Ugh... The Batman fan in me hates to stroke the ego of The Bat-god, but... regardless of the absence of an actual doctorate, doesn't Batman have the training to BE a doctor? He did study psychology while prepping for his war of crime, and we all know how he strides to be the BEST at everything he does. Does that not suggest that he would be qualified to help these other heroes deal with their issues? "You know what you would PROBABLY get??" Only the most hilariously broken thing in existence. That was GOLD! lmao 20:25 - Sadly, THIS Penguin is more Danny DeVito than the Penguin who was actually WRITTEN by Danny DeVito... Oy...

Well, his name is King. Guess he would reign, making the worst DC Event of the decade. Edit: I want to make clear that Tom King is a great writer. I love his run on Vision, and I felt he was done dirty on his Batman run being cut very short (He was killing it with City of Bane), but I do think he has a habit of vilifying or embarrassing characters if it suits his story. The Gift is made BG practically evil by sheer stupidity, and Thomas Wayne is somehow able to beat Bruce and then leaves him to die in a desert. Thomas, the guy who risked everything to let Bruce live instead of him in Flashpoint, practically leaves his kid to die in a hole. I'm not saying King is a bad writer, but when he changes things, it reaks of retconning and not thinking it through and it comes off as disrespectful and mean spirited, even when he's not trying to be.

Time and place for being cute and it is NOT it. Also, yeah, both the Harley Quinn movie AND cartoon actually were arsed to remember that she was a psychiatrist at some point. Hell, in the movie she psychoanalyzed some of the characters at some points. Doesn't believe in trauma? Really?!

That whole thing about Sanctuary being some kind of "best of" compilation of the Trinity seems like an unnecessary plot hole. Sure, some other media like the Young Justice cartoon has them say that keeping the weaknesses of the heroes on the downlow is good for public morale or something(though that was in terms of not making the deaths of heroes public), so we can MAYBE say that putting out a call for a superhero therapist is possibly something they may not want to do, but why not privately hire a bunch of specialists in mental health to form the basis for the Sanctuary AI? Bruce Wayne could probably shake enough spare change out of his couch to get the best of the best, so why not do that?

Between this and The Gift, I am so glad to have stopped reading DC comics. Wally and Booster were my two favorite heroes. Booster especially, since after Infinite Crisis, he went from being the immature fool out for personal glory, to pretending to be the immature fool while he and his son, Rip Hunter, protected the integrity of history. He really was the Greatest Hero You've Never Heard Of. All of that is gone now. The hero I enjoyed is gone. All I have left of Good DC universe right now is the DCAU, Young Justice especially. Can't wait to see how DC fucks that up.

Lewis, I wanted to thank you for putting out this amazing content week to week. I've been watching for a while, my first episode of yours was the Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham review, and it's really interesting how the common themes you keep bringing up from comics got me engaged with your show: An eyecatching cover (with the comic holding you), good content, and a mythology that makes the viewer or reader want to learn more about what came before. I binged your back catalog after that, and now, 7 (I think, dunno how long ago that vid was) years later, I'm with you all the way. Keep up the amazing work.

So, if I had to guess based on the first issue of the comic, I would hazard that the original plan was that Harley Quinn killed everyone at Sanctuary and the idea was to turn her back into a villain. What with her idiotic confessional mocking people who suffer from trauma, I would guess that the justification would be that she thought people who needed help with trauma were "weak", and that superheroes who needed help with trauma were therefore weak and brought the rest of the superhero community down. "The puddlers are all dead" means that there's nobody left to "skim the weakness and the impurities" from the superhero community (aka the mentally ill ones) and that's why she did it, to get rid of what she saw as the weakness in the community and therefore make everyone stronger. And that she would somehow frame Booster Gold for it (possibly using poisons she got from Poison Ivy to unbalance his mental state and make him hallucinate) to make everybody, including him, think he did it, and get away with it. The novelty teeth thing would be a double bluff: so obviously connected to her that there's no way she would be stupid enough to plant it, so clearly somebody is framing her, right? I would also guess that Tom King wrote the first issue based on this idea, presented the overall story to DC, and somebody told him that it was garbage and to try again, hence why the actual Heroes in Crisis ended up with so many obvious last-second rewrites, because it was written on the fly after the original idea got thrown out. Obviously this is just speculation, and if this is the case that story would have been absolute crap, possibly even more crap than the story that ended up happening.
