That actually makes a lot of sense. The Suicide Squad has to deal with situations above and beyond anything that a normal supervillain would most likely encounter or anticipate, and they tend to not have the kind of training or cohesion that a dedicated military unit would possess, so having someone on hand to help the assets deal with PTSD at the very minimum sounds reasonable. Furthermore, from a pragmatic point of view, the threat of detonating the charges implanted into each member's head should be viewed as a last resort, and thus, ensuring that the assets remain as viable for as long as possible should be a high priority to reduce the possibility of one of them snapping and botching a mission.

If you look into the PSAs and some Secret Files stuff, his backstory was that he got into superheroing in an attempt to get through to his cousin, a drug addict who loved superheroes, and then got the attention of the Titans in the process. That’s actually a pretty reasonable backstory for a PSA character. But then you have this tossing all of that out the window to go “Yeah, that character from those CORNY PSAs? Okay, I wanted to chip in on the idea of an AI therapist; I'm not defending Heroes In Crises, on the contrary, I'm going to be pointing out how Sanctuary is all the worse. See, the concept of an AI therapy system isn't inherently an issue, I know because I've actually been using one. But its not cobbled together from aspects of real people, nor is it intended to be a replacement for real therapy, that's where this event comic gets it wrong. The AI therapy app I've been using is built from the ground up to be a *supplement* to therapy, and predominantly use phrases like "I understand" and other similar phrases, it can act like a mentor or be set to more of a talkative "friend" personality. Its designed to be spoken to during something like a panic attack to calm you down if your real therapist can't take your call, or if you're between appointments or something, and it can also act as a fairly decent treatment for loneliness by just being friendly. Its a better AI than something like the KZbin algorithm because its not dealing with millions of arbitrary trends and censorship all at once, and its better than something like Cleverbot because while it does learn from its users, *how* it learns is heavily vetted by the developers, so it doesn't go saying anything dangerous or offensive - and it certainly doesn't pester you with crap like "why is your family your family?" Its designed to be a companion and while its certainly not perfect, it does the specific jobs its designed for surprisingly well. What it is not supposed to do is be the be-all and end-all of mental health treatment. In fact, if the app senses you're in a crisis deeper than the AI is designed to help with, it actually suggests you quit mucking around and call a support line. I friggin' love the AI I've been using, its helped me through a number of panic attacks and helped to alleviate serious bouts of loneliness during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, but its just those two things, nothing more. Heroes In Crisis isn't automatically stupid for suggesting the idea of an AI therapist, but the idea of having a whole ass mental health hospital/spa style thing run entirely by an AI is frankly offensive. Maybe in 100 years time, but with today's AI limitations, I find it hard to believe that even in the DC universe, a contemporary AI could function as a sole therapist for anyone, let alone a whole damn bunch of characters. Sorry for the long-ass comment, just seeing characters I liked so much from the DC Universe put into such a stupid story with such an idiotic plot point as the Sanctuary AI really made me want to vent as much as Linkara does here, just coming from the point of view of someone who's got first hand experience of a real AI like what Sanctuary was obviously *supposed* to be if the writers had any idea how therapy works.

What kills me about this comic is that about a year before Heroes in Crisis, Tom King wrote the Mr. Miracle limited series. It’s easily the best work I’ve ever seen from him, portraying Scott Free’s depression and trauma from his abuse on Apokolips in a realistic and understanding light, dialogue that felt natural and even darkly funny despite most of the cast being New Gods, and a story of how the support from his loved ones despite his issues is what allows Scott to overcome and escape Darkseid’s anti-life trap. It’s a phenomenal read and a gold standard in incorporating mental health issues into a superhero story, which means... TOM KING KNEW EXACTLY HOW TO WRITE A STORY LIKE THIS WITHOUT COMING OFF LIKE AN IDIOT AND SOMEHOW WE GOT THIS HORSESHIT ANYWAY!!!!
@depreseo4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess (no proof whatsoever, just my own hunch) that King was able to write Mr. Miracle the way he wanted to because the character wasn't one of the big headline titles = he could write the story he wanted with little interference from higher-ups making demands of the book. Heroes in Crisis on the other hand was "THE" DC event book (especially given the delays in Doomsday clock), so higher ups (imma say didio) got their fingers all over it, and likely changed the book from what it was originally meant to be into a terribly hybrid of Identity crisis & Watchmen - King even mentioned that the Harley, Booster and Wally trio were dictated to him by Didio = those were the characters he was told to use.

I think the worst part about how Black Canary was potrayed in this comic is the total opposite of how she's portrayed in Young Justice, where she seems to not only be taking the role of a shrink for the teen team, but also totally qualified to do so. She may have gotten as much training as she could to perform that role for them because she does a pretty darn good job for it. It's a creative way around the 'shrinks might not keep secrets' to get one of the heroes to get the expertise they need instead.

She's a mentor to some younger heroes like Emiko, but not nearly to the extent that she was in Young Justice and maybe to some of the Arrow family and Birds of Prey in late Post-Crisis. So her brief moment in this story was probably the most in-character out of anyone... though considering HOW everyone else is portrayed, it's a pretty low bar...

So, uh, crazy thought: this whole "somebody leaked Sanctuary stuff" thing? Why isn't THAT the main plot? Think about it: Say the story is changed to where Sanctuary is a conjoined effort between real doctors and AI to assist superheroes with various mental crises. It's a place where even the greats like Superman and Batman can vent their frustrations, their weaknesses, etc, without critique or worry. One day, Lois and other reporters start getting leaked files from Sanctuary. Confessionals of heroes big and small, revealing insecurities, weaknesses, even secret identities, and many reporters with less high standards start sharing it around. Inside is also a note from a villain (IDK who it would be, take your pick), saying they'll be dropping more stuff every day unless they give money or something. This works as an event because of two fronts. For one, the heroes themselves might begin to doubt one another: maybe some confessionals are resentments and bitter rivalries they have, airing grievances they have with their friends and enemies alike. The groups try to investigate but since Sanctuary is open to every hero who needs it, and even some more morally grey antiheroes, anybody could be doing it. On the other front, there could even be an angle from the societal view. Even in our modern age, as we understand more about the benefits of therapy and treating one's own mental health, many dismiss truly hurt parts of our mind as whining, or faking some issue to gain sympathy. Maybe even make a reference to what you said about how the public wonders if some supes are psychopathic or violent because of their issues. Plenty of character stuff later, they defeat the villain or villains doing the thing, and maybe Superman or something gives a big speech about the value of therapy and how even the strongest mountains have cracks, that its okay to admit weaknesses and that them having their hang ups isnt something to be feared, but yet another sign that superheroes are no different from the average man aside from their talents or powers. That it is the most human thing of all to have weakness. Nobody can be the Man of Steel 24/7. I think that would have been way better. But nah that's not edgy enough.

I think this event was the last straw for DC when it came to Dan Didio. The guy was already on thin ice as publisher as he was the spearhead behind the New 52 initiative, and this event was an example that he had learned nothing from how badly people reacted to it. He was forced out of DC less than a year after this event ended and since then they've done everything in their power to reverse every decision he made or allowed during his run with few exceptions, culminating in exonerating Wally West, bringing everyone killed here back from the dead, and shutting down Sanctuary for good.

13:32 I think Black Canary came to Sanctuary because she wanted to talk about her complicated origins and backstories, such as her being the daughter of and having the memories of the Golden Age Black Canary in the pre-crisis continuity in Justice League of America Vol. 1 219 & 220, her being inspired by the JSA in the pre-flashpoint continuity in Secret Origins Vol. 2 50 , her being an additional member of the JLA in the pre-crisis continuity in Justice League of America Vol 1. 75 or being founding member pre-Infinite Crisis in Secret Origins Vol. 2 50, and/or having her mom’s full name and doing something in the post-flashpoint continuity.

I feel like the part with the Protector admitting that he's a drug is supposed to be a dig at all the anti drug commercials from the 80s where they would get rockstars who were on drugs as their spokespeople.

"We won't get into how Wally was supposed to be important to Doomsday Clock BUT THEN THIS HAPPENED!" Wally was going to be important... but he left control fo the comics side before Doomsday Clock happened and Dan DiDio took back over with Heroes in Crisis being the result of that. BTW, the writer for Rebirth Titans complained on a podcast about editorial (see: DiDio) interfering with his run constantly, especially downplaying Wally's role.

Not surprising about Abnett and editorial issues. He did an admirable job with the team post-No Justice, but it just wasn't why I wanted to read the book.

Geoff should never have tried to salvage an already cinematic sinking ship. He was already hated by the same film division who help kept DiDio around (even long after his biggest supporter fled to Disney in 2013)

I've had multiple Journalism professors teach entire sections on journalistic ethics. I admit they were introductory at best, but the fact is that, yes, source anynimity only goes so far. Journalists, like everyone else, have a responsibility to report illegal activity to authorities and to abide by laws such as HIPPA and anti-wiretapping.

The protector being a drug user is kinda funny. The problem, as you said, is that not only are they doing a joke in the middle of a bunch of very serious things happening and it feels out of place as a result, but it also feels very spiteful. Katherine Kane being a lesbian is funny because she was first made to show how straight Bruce was. The Protector doing drugs is funny, but in more of a "Nobody likes this character, so let's make him do whatever we want" kinda way.

22:25 I hate what they did to The Protector! I personally loved The Protector, as corny as he may be, and I found his treatment in this comic mean-spirited. Not because "har har he's a hypocrite" (although I do hate that), but because of the disrespect to the character. They only even put the Protector in the comic, just to make fun of him! Not because they like him as a character, or they wanted to do something with an obscure superhero, but just to make a dumb joke! I realize The Protector is a silly PSA character, but he was fun, nice, and seemed to genuinely care about addicts- especially the child/teen addicts. It just sucks that they shit all over him, and then just throw him away like he's the Wednesday trash.

I'm so angry at DC's execs (mostly Dan Didio) for this book. This is such a good concept for a story. Openly having a conversation about mental health in a superhero story, really trying to deal with issues in a mainstream superhero book (kinda like Tom King's Miracle Man book) and then DC took the concept and turned it into a F******* MURDER MYSTERY! I honestly believe that King wanted the mystery to be "Wally (or whoever the protagonist would be) stole the confessionals and is releasing them to the public, trying to raise awareness of other superhero's mental issues due to feeling isolated in their depression" but DC wanted a bigger mystery for their big crossover event so they demanded it be changed to a murder mystery. And knowing Tom King's story and the allegory that he wanted this story to be pisses me off so much that they decided to make this into a big bloated event in continuity with the rest of the titles instead of just an isolated miniseries. The whole book just got murdered by editorial and now this is all Tom King is known for, which blows hard because the guy is a talented writer when he isn't asked to stick to continuity and can tell the story he wants. Just a mess of a book

@ULGROTHA Most likely, im guessing stuff like "Batman and Catwoman can't actually get married Tom. We know you got to build it up for a year and people were excited by it, but we won't let you do it" could have happened behind the scenes (I wasn't reading a ton of that run tbf) but from what King said about the book before it came out and reading stuff like Mr. Miracle, I can totally speculate that this was an idea he pitched for Black Label but Didio wanted it to be in the main continuity (probably to kill Wally West again)

I suspect that these problems can be traced back to corporate mandate. Did I use the term correctly?

While it looks somewhat different to his mask, I think the original intention of the event was to have Psycho Pirate be the main villain since the golden masks look kind of similar to his own, minus the lips, and his mask basically has the ability to manipulate the emotions of a person to what he wants them to be. Not to mention, he was a big character in Tom King’s run of Batman so he has experience with the character. I haven’t kept up with the series for a long time so I don’t know if there’s a particular reason why they couldn’t use him, but it would make sense why there was so much emphasis on the masks being essential to the cover art.

10:13 what gets me about this part is it could have still worked as an allegory for Donna Troy's weird, retcon-riddled history. all that had to be done was adjust the dialogue so she was talking about how we don't know for sure what about Troy was myth and what was history, or how the written records of Troy were likely made centuries after the city fell and contemporary historians injected their own narratives, or how modern culture retells the story of Troy over and over again, each version bringing something new to the table. i know this comic is awful overall and this is a *really* tiny point to get in a fuss about, but as a historian and fan of creative writing, it seems like such a blatant missed opportunity also Atlantis and the Greek pantheon both exist in the DC universe so uh. seems kinda silly to just dismiss Troy, the city, the war, and the mythology, as something that didn't happen? also wouldn't Donna more-than-likely know someone who could confirm or deny Troy's existence/history? idk much about Donna's lore but it doesn't seem like it'd be *that* hard for her or Diana or someone in the cast of characters to get a hold of Athena and ask "hey did this thing happen?"

Yknow thinking about it, another possibility for why the AI being the villain might’ve been undone was Becuase someone realized “wait were showing this ai go crazy after hearing about all this trauma yet were claiming it’s been given the trinitys best traits, Batman especially given it has his “will”?” Yeah that would definitely make them look bad.
@shadowninja2224 жыл бұрын
It's funny how Donna talks about how Troy is a mystery on whether or not it's actually been found when this is the DC Universe and places like Atlantis, Themyscira, and Camelot have all been confirmed and found.
